Trying out ‘Flying Arete V7/f7A+‘ over at Higgar Tor the other week. Reminded me how much I needed to get back into training. Not a single move felt easy but  that also might just be the lack of grit climbing come to think of it. I think the real point I’m trying to make is that I need more climbing in my life.

Third day climbing with Tel in Spain! This time our destination was Xeresa, a north faced wall with sport multi-pitch routes perfect for the summer! In the morning it was raining a bit but then it stopped and we were able to do Esperando a Maria (6a+, 110m). After a lunch break we did the first pitch of Alta Tension, a very funny long 7a with lots of jugs all the way up. In his second go, Tel managed to send the route making his hardest climb of the trip so far!! Something like 24 in the AUS climbing scale! Congrats!! 💪💪🎉 . Kaycee took some videos of me climbing today and I hated looking at myself in every single one of them. So here are three pictures that I also hate, but a little less, so that she doesn’t yell at me for not using her videos. Hopefully.

We climbed on the side of the gym where the cool kids hang out and of course I embarrassed myself by falling and smacking my jaw so loud that I thought my teeth fell out. Didn’t hurt though, thank goodness. No injuries today. I also made it to the top of the wall for the first time since I started climbing (like where you touch the end of the wall, not a stone). That felt really really good. Now, I just need to work on all the times I psych myself out and get scared…

We also learned two new phrases today: barn-door and flagging. It is said that you “barn-door” when holding on with the same side hand and foot causes you to swing off the wall. “Flagging,” is the correct way to balance, using the opposite foot and hand to hold on when your other hand reaches for the next hold. Climbing vocabulary!

This is the third move on the boulder, a nice smeer and tiny foot hold with a good little seem for a hand hold. I’m going for that next little seem.

By now we were about ten miles off route, and everything was going fine and we were having a pleasant time. I knew where there were some beers under a boulder in the stream about two days walk from here and took comfort in that knowledge.
