i think people are misunderstanding what a “mean femme” is supposed to mean because no it’s not attractive or funny to be mean to butches/studs/mascs and talk about us like we’re ugly, dumb and think being the femme means you are allowed to talk to me however way you want to

i don’t know where the confusion happened but ummmm no i’m not going to allow someone to yell at me or treat me mean just bc i’m the butch and can “handle it”

“mean femmes” are supposed to be mean to those who are being lesbophobic/mean to butches/transphobic/etc. it doesn’t mean verbally abuse butch lesbians

i see this so often and it really irritates me so many people including other lesbians are just so mean to gnc lesbians

i love femmes don’t get me wrong but some femmes i see seriously are just mean towards us ESPECIALLY if they aren’t attracted to butches

maybe some people like that level of attitude or maybe i am sensitive but butches can be sensitive too

You’re not sensitive; wires got crossed somewhere. People started taking “mean,” femme literally instead of mean from the perspective of a cishet who’s being abusive. Mean femme has never and will never mean being mean to other queer people; our job is to protect our community. That is the legacy; I carry it with great pride. We got called mean for sticking up for our people even against members OF THE COMMUNITY and it was like, “yeah fuck you I am mean then.” And then it got twisted. Now everyone’s taking the cishet framing of it and applying it rather than what it actually is. The mean femme was in fact just assertive, a protector, a leader—which straight people view femme presenting people as “mean” for. Now it’s this and I’m disappointed.

This is what happens when we don’t keep up with queer history.

i'm not a particularly sensitive person but maybe the only big thing i am super sensitive about is my eating habits. because not only is having trouble eating physically bad for you, it's also incredibly inconvenient and deeply alienating. on top of that it's one of the things that everyone loves to reach across the aisle to agree people should feel bad about themselves for. like when people on this website get together and decide that they absolutely need everyone to know how pathetic they find the idea of a person who would order chicken fingers at a fancy restaurant. yeah yeah i get it picky eaters are all adult children and always will be and they deserve our scorn. it's a good thing they're all just doing it on purpose by refusing to try new things so we pretty much just have a free pass to publicly ridicule them.

there's a lot of talk about reading comprehension and one thing i think is the biggest barrier to people on this site getting better at it is simply... rushing. rushing to share something you haven't understood, rushing to have an opinion without taking the time to think about it, rushing to declare that you don't understand something

the thing is. this is what i would call an inside thought. nobody would have known you didn't get it if you didn't tell them that. if you recognised that it was important but didn't have the headspace to process it, you can reblog without commentary for others, or to come back to later. or you can save it somewhere and wait until you DO have the capacity to read it over a few more times, ponder it, consider what it might mean, figure out how to understand it, and THEN reblog it

but no. rushing to reblog while it is still opaque. rushing to admit to ignorance rather than spend the time to achieve understanding. perhaps hoping that somebody will break it down for you more simply, though to my mind it was quite simply phrased in the first place. never stopping to take the time first

comprehension is not always instant! sometimes it takes a bit of time for something to percolate after you read it; sometimes you need to read it a few times; sometimes you realise you don't have the context for it and either go and get the context or accept that it's not for you right now

please just simply slow down. you don't always have to respond to everything within a second or two. it is okay if it is not an instantaneous understanding. we all need to get more comfortable with thinking more slowly and more deeply and more carefully, and not letting our instant split second responses drive us all the time, because they are a barrier to genuine reflection
