Happy Fatherâs Day to all the Portland State Dads out there! Here is our mascot as a Dad with his child!
Artist: Adrianna DâAgostinoÂ
Age: 20
Hometown: Redondo Beach, CA
Major: Art Practices with a Bachelor of Fine ArtsÂ
Favorite Medium: My favorite mediums include painting in acrylic, oil and gouache. But I also do digital drawings, and work in Copic markers and colored pencil.Â
Aspirations after college: After college I plan on centering my career around illustration and concept art. I've never took any art classes in high school but was always surrounded by creative people and worked on art in my free time. For a long time I thought I wanted to work on films, but once I got to PSU I found that my true passion lied in creating art. I want to use my skills to bring characters to life that inspire others like books and cartoons have done for me as well as the people around me.Â

Steps to Moving Out of your PSU Dorm from the pdx.edu website!
If you are planning to Move Out prior to end of your contract, you must first request a contract cancellation in the Housing Office. Depending on the circumstances, you may incur charges for leaving early. Deadlines apply, so carefully read the Terms & Conditions of your contract.
Either sign up for a Walk-Through or plan to complete an Express Check-Out.
Thoroughly clean your room and remove all garbage and personal belongings. You may not leave items behind to pick up later or for the next occupant to use. Anything remaining in the room will incur charges for removal.
Check out of your room either through an Express Check-Out or a Walk-Through (see step 2). Â After you check out University Housing staff will evaluate the condition of your room and charge any applicable fees to your student account, including the cost of repairing any damage not recorded on the Room Condition Report at check-in and cleaning or repair costs for damages exceeding normal wear and tear.
Return your keys to the Montgomery Service Desk immediately following your check-out. Â If the Montgomery Desk is closed there is a dropbox at the University Housing Office at 210 Broadway. Â If have lost any keys, please notify the Montgomery Desk as soon as possible rather than waiting for your check out.
Express Check-Out: Â Express check-outs are a good option for residents who are unsure about the date or time they plan to move out, and need extra flexibility. Â If you choose to complete an Express Check Out, you will return your keys to the Montgomery Service Desk (between 9am-midnight) or the Housing Office (midnight-9am). Â Staff will complete a walk-through of your room after you have moved out, and you will be unable to appeal any charges for damages or cleaning in your room.
Walk-Through: Â Walk-Throughs are a good option for residents who believe there may be cleaning or damage charges in their room, and/or know when they plan to have their room cleaned and belongings moved out. Â Residents must have their belongings out of the room before a walk-through can be completed. Â During weeks 1-9 of each term, you can ask your RA to schedule a walk- through. Â You will agree on a time/date to meet with your RA, and they will provide an assessment of possible charges based of the condition of the room while you are present. Â If you are moving out during week 10 or finals week, you will sign up for a walk-through at the Montgomery Area Desk.

17-year-old whiz kid with engineering degree is youngest to graduate from PSU
The topic of Asma Khanâs age never comes up with her classmates at Portland State University. âNone of them really have any idea,â Khan said.
And yet, when the civil engineering major walks on stage to get her diploma this spring, sheâll be the youngest of more than 6,000 graduates at PSU to do so.
Born in California, Khan moved to Portland as a small child and was homeschooled for most of her primary school years. She skipped âa couple of gradesâ along the way and entered an early college program in high school that allowed her to complete her high school credits at community college. Khan enrolled in PCC at 13 and entered PSU at 16, completing her final two years toward a bachelorâs degree in civil engineering.
âIn my two years of attending PSU as a fully veiled Muslim woman, I never once encountered a hostile incident or ever felt unwanted,â Khan said. âMy teachers, advisors, and classmates were the most welcoming, friendly and helpful people, and I am thankful to them for making this journey so much easier and memorable for me.â
Khan is deciding whether to pursue her masters or join the workforce after graduation. We caught up with her to learn more about her educational journey. Some answers have been edited for length.
How did you decide on civil engineering?
Because I was young, I had a lot of time to explore courses and decide my career path. During my second term at PCC, I took a class outlining introductory concepts of engineering. This class really sparked my interest, and I decided to consider engineering as a possible career choice option. After consulting with my family and advisors and taking courses in various other fields such as chemistry, business, and literature, etc. I finally decided that engineering will be my choice of career.
My advisors then charted a three-year plan for concurrently attaining a high school diploma, getting an Associate Degree in Science, and completing two yearsâ credit of civil engineering at PCC. I entered PSU in Fall 2017 to complete the last two years toward my bachelorâs degree.
Why did you attend PSU?
I chose to transfer PSU for a couple of reasons. A main reason was that I was offered a generous full-time scholarship. Additionally, one factor that struck me from my research when choosing a university is PSUâs diverse student body. As a young Muslim woman, my family and I were apprehensive for my well-being and acceptance while being a student in a university. I wanted to study in a place where I wouldnât risk harassment because of my Muslim attire or feel insecure and anxious because of a hostile environment. And now, graduating from PSU, I can confidently say that it is indeed a university with a cordial atmosphere that made me feel welcome and valued. In my two years of attending PSU as a fully veiled Muslim woman, I never once encountered a hostile incident or ever felt unwanted. My teachers, advisors, and classmates were the most welcoming, friendly, and helpful people, and I am thankful to them for making this journey so much easier and memorable for me. Â
How does it feel to be the youngest grad at PSU?
I feel really humbled and blessed to live in an area with so many resources and support that I was able to achieve this. To be honest, I donât think I feel any different from anyone attaining a degree. Regardless whether youâre young or old, there is that incredible sense of being handed your degree. Itâs the feeling of finally making it, making your family proud and excitement to move on to the next step of our lives. Â
Do you have advice for other PSU students?
I would advise future students to have a clear vision of what it is you want to do at the earlier stages, and then following through with that plan. Itâs easy to get tangled up and confused because of the hundreds of career options there; however, it is important to narrow down your choices and discuss thoroughly with the advisors. Once you make the decision, stick to it. When the coursework starts to get tougher, that career choice will probably feel like the biggest mistake, but the key is to get support, never give up and not lose sight of the end goal.
Packing Tips!
Packing, packing, packing!
Packing is only as stressful as you make it! If you begin packing well enough in advance, thereâs a strong possibility that youâre not going to forget anything. School starts in a little less than a month, so if you havenât started packing already, itâs time to start! I have some packing tips to help make packing and moving your stuff a whole lot easier.
Put your pillows in your shams and pillow cases before you leave home!
If you have a shower caddy, put your shower items in it!
Use your under-bed storage boxes to transport stuff to your dorm!
Utilize laundry baskets/hampers to hold items.
Pre-wash and dry your towels before you leave home!
Use your backpack to store and transport school supplies!
Leave items with small parts in their original packaging (and save the packaging for when you move out!)
Pack everything into one vehicle, if it doesnât all fit, youâre going to have the same problem moving out at the end of the semester/year.Â
Universities will have carts to help people transport items from their vehicles to their dorm rooms. Athletes will sometimes help people carry items to their room, so donât be afraid to ask.
Also, there will be large numbers of people trying to move items from their cars to the dorm halls so be patient if you have to wait 10 or 15 minutes for an elevator. Remember: every freshman at the school will be moving in on the same day, unless they have made special arrangements with the school.
On Campus Study Spot #1 University Success West
Located under King Albert Student housing next to Hoffman HallÂ
I live on the west side of campus in University Housing and U. Success is one of my favorite places to study. Itâs quiet, thereâs a nice restroom, and itâs safe. Itâs hours are 2pm-10pm Monday-Friday and Sunday 5pm-10pm. When I come here to study Iâm always there for at least 4 hours. It does get really cold in there so bring a jacket, or be like me and get comfy. Wear pajamas, bring snacks and buckle up for hours of studying.Â
Thereâs free printing, outlets, wifi, a hot chocolate and tea station, and a cafe! Hot Chocolate and tea are free, and you can use dining dollars in the cafe if you have a meal plan. If you donât have a meal plan they accept cards and cash like SMSU food court. The prices are your average food cart prices, nothing is over $11.00. Most things range from $6.00-$9.00. I got a burrito for $8.00 and it was really big, so I basically got 2 meals out of it.The cafe menu is mainly Greek/Mediterranean food with vegan/vegetarian options. Thereâs even a coffee menu if you need some for a late study night!Â
University Success West is open to everyone on campus, regardless of where you may live. Utilize this great campus resource!
