Though only a few days had passed since her return, Enya was thrown back into work to catch up with everything missed over the three years she’d been gone.
At the moment, however, she was taking a break, squatting at the coffee table cleaning some old equipment—a gun. Specifically, a handgun she had carried around years prior and buried in the yard shortly after; mostly because Sarah insisted upon it. So it a strange request on its own, and despite his complaints, it was now strewn across the table in parts.
He distractedly watched her from the couch, nervously fidgeting with his phone, repeatedly taking it out and putting it away again after a brief glance with a frown.
This continued for another few minutes before he noticed Enya staring at him with an openly confused expression.
“[What are you doing].”
Sarah opened his mouth to respond, still half-distracted, then stopped and pursed his lips with a small smile.
“I’m… sorry, I didn’t quite understand that.”
He smiled fully at her responding scowl—Enya’s grasp of modern English was already bad enough, and disuse of it didn’t help, so he’d been having her work on it. She turned to her work as she struggled to translate.
“Hhyou. Do en. Tha. For?” He worked with her, managing a final ‘why you'd en tha’. Sarah rubbed his head and sighed. This was a long time coming.
“Well,” he started, slowly, “I’ve been spending a lot of time with Sidney. While you were gone. A.. a lot of time. A few dates, even.”
Her stare didn’t falter; not unexpected, her memory had already been noticeable sparse when it involved any recent information.
“He is—”
“He?” Enya cackled. “Gay.”
“He,” Sarah said, raising his voice to override hers. “Is the black kid with the dyed hair. The.. individually dyed pastel dreadlocks you insisted upon.”
Realization lit up her face as she laughed again, stopping with an annoyingly smug smirk before turning back to her work. “He. In or ant?”
“Is he important?”
She waved a hand at his correction and he sighed. “He’s. We’ve grown close. Perhaps too much, but it’s nothing that can be helped now. Certainly important enough for me to check up on him. Then again, I’m feeling more keyed up than usual because there’s a gun on the table."
Passing over his snide comment, Enya squint, sounding skeptical as she asked, “You.. care. Bow. Bo. Him?”
“Do I care about him?” Sarah cleared his throat. “I do wish him a... comfortable life, and I happen to be someone who seemingly fulfills part of that.”
Enya continued staring—that wasn’t an answer. Sarah looked down at his twisting hands. “I don’t have to answer that.”
She snort, and he frowned at her. “Stop it.”
“Yh—” Struggling to speak concisely, Enya reverted to the easier language. “[You sound like you do not want to hear the answer].”
He objected to her change, but she continued. "[You are lying to him, or do you feel something more than any]?"
The silence, it seemed, was answer enough. Shaking her head, Enya again looked away from him. "[You're an idiot]."
"That's uncalled for."
"[You're just lying to him]," she slammed her hand on the table, "[for what? So he can think you're amazing and perfect? Validation]?"
"I just.. want him to be happy."
"[It can't last forever]."
"Obviously"
"[You're lying to yourself]."
"Unfortunate and unavoidable."
She gripped her fists and he sighed. "Perhaps you should analyze your own feelings before mine."
"[Shut up]."
"What's bothering you about this, Enya"
She didn't answer, but he didn't press. "How about the three of us get together and talk, okay? Get this sorted out. The last thing I'd do is abandon you.. but he deserves the same courtesy."
"...Okay."
He smiled, and she finally abandoned her project entirely, moving closer to rest her head on his lap. She held a tight faced frown—likely she was far from dropping the subject—but soon relaxed add he brushed her hair. This was going to take some work.
I like that Sarah was nice enough to give me clothes, even though I was a grouchy fuck at the time and even though he didn’t know it was me right away. I like that he’s a nice guy

As late as the night grew, Sarah stayed awake. He was fidgety — being alone in his home without any other life beside himself. It felt unnatural and uncomfortable and he couldn’t keep still.
Wake up, my beauties. Rise and shine. It’s a brand new day and the mortal world is at peace. But not for long. Just look at them; I pull one tiny thread and their whole world unravels into chaos. Glorious chaos.
