ok based on previews + adaptation speculation gwayne is probably gonna treat with ulf, and while their possible interactions were already interesting because of gwayne's whole unlearning classism arc, the revelation that ulf was abused in the first episode of the season makes their dynamic even richer. i struggle to imagine it coming up directly but i really hope they allude to it in some way

rewatching the scene where gwayne and alicent talk about daeron and. um. gwayne is lying through his teeth 😬

gwayne's abandonment wounds are freshly salted by otto's disappearance, but he doesn't want to talk about it with alicent, so he keeps turning away from her and trying to shake her off until finally he comes out with: "you get on with it, don't you? (meaningfully) when there isn't any choice."

and then alicent says: "my son daeron." and gwayne draws himself up, looking... uncomfortable. pained. guilty, even.

and then when gwayne can't avoid the question he looks at the ground, then puts on one of his showy exaggerated tones and pretty blatantly tries to work out what alicent wants to hear. what he says about daeron is true but it's also a list of relatively superficial status symbols until he relents and just says "he's kind." and then he reassures alicent that she made the right choice while avoiding eye contact for a full ten seconds. his only fully sincere words after daeron's name is mentioned are "he's kind" and "i'm sure you did your best". and immediately after saying the latter he ends the conversation with a shaky voice. he grasps alicent's hand as he leaves, but he doesn't meet her eyes as he does it.

it's not even a very good lie. but because they never got to grow up together, alicent doesn't know him well enough to see that there is something very wrong.

#AWESOME #i've been thinking a lot about 'you get on with it' too #i think when i first started really paying attention to the gwayne/criston dynamic (like a week ago)#i thought gwayne was comparatively self actualized #like with his quips. his wanting to stay at an inn as privileged as that is #he is able to articulate his desires in a way that criston isn't #(while at the same time he can't STOP desiring. and the result is always destructive either toward himself or others)#but like with the ormund context--but also even that line in s2--its SO CLEAR that gwaynes brand of pragmatism is a coping mechanism #which like. how could it not be.#but it's what makes him the perfect foil to criston #gwayne can be comfortable with his desires in a way criston can't be #and he AFFECTS comfort with his fears and trauma but he can't really seem to look at them head on #whereas criston revels in his despair and trauma #idk there's a missing link here and it's definitely your daeron stuff #hotd
