Redesign of the Akatsuki robes bc I really like its design but it would have been more interesting if every Akatsuki wore it differently.
More details:
The length of the sleeves and robe depends on the need for mobilty of each character, which in turn depends on their fighting styles and abilities. Characters like Kisame and Sasori have shorter sleeves bc they need their arms free to fight. Itachi wearing a longer robe is bc he usually fights with genjutsu, it is also a sign of shameless pride to boast that he doesn't need movement to defeat an opponent.
Uchiha clothing usually have that same high collar thingy that the base Akatsuki robe gets and Obito and Itachi wear it open on purpose, to show their distance with the clan. Also Obito's collar gets bigger and pointier with each change.
Obito's shift from Tobi to Madara makes it seem like he tore his long sleeves. His silhouette is also hidden until the war where he becomes more reckless and stops caring about hiding his identity so carefully. He also got rid of the sleeve that hid the zetsu arm, the not-human one (both bc of symbolism and bc he tends to lose the arm often).
Hidan and Kakuzu seemingly represent the opposite of their themes, religion and money respectively. Hidan looks like a half naked anarchist (which is kind of way off "orthodoxy vibes") though he still has the Jashin jewlery. On the other hand Kakuzu looks homeless but that's bc he's so greedy and stingy he refuses to buy more clothes.
Pain/Nagato and Konan are the only ones with the basic robe bc they're the ones who feel more emotionally connected to the Akatsuki. They get more red bc of the "blood rain" symbolism.
I tried to add to those few hints at modern vibes in Deidara and Hidan's base designs while keeping the shinobi aesthetic bc it fits their character, and after all they are the youngest.
Overall I also did some small redesigns to everyone's base character design.
It was challenging to play around with the Akatsuki robe while also trying to make their character designs more telling of how they are as people but that's precisely why it was fun. I'll be using these when drawing the Akatsuki from now on.
Hey strawb I'm a trans woman and my close friend talked to me about how gender isn't real, and that by doing stuff like wearing dresses or having makeup I'm reinforcing the concept of gender, which she said is bad because ideally a post-gender world is what to strive for... this came up because we were discussing Whipping Girl by Julia Serano. I'd like to feel that there is something inherent to me that makes me a woman but am I just repeating gender essentialist rhetoric by doing that?
that's straight up a TERF talking point girl! why are trans women the only people who are doing this enforcement? why do cis women get off scot free? what about men? why is it our responsibility to put ourselves in the closet and not express ourselves for the nebulous promise of a far distant "post-gender" future?
...The practice of subversivism also negatively impacts trans people on the MTF spectrum. After all, in our culture, the meanings of “bold,” “rebellious,” and “dangerous”—adjectives that often come to mind when considering subversiveness—are practically built into our understanding of masculinity. In contrast, femininity conjures up antonyms like “timid,” “conventional,” and “safe,” which seem entirely incompatible with subversion. Therefore, despite the fact that the mainstream public tends to be more concerned and disturbed by MTF spectrum trans people than their FTM spectrum counterparts, subversivism creates the impression that trans masculinities are inherently “subversive” and “transgressive,” while their trans feminine counterparts are “lame” and “conservative” in comparison... - Whipping Girl Chapter 20: The Future of Queer/Trans Activism, Julia Serano
Serano herself hits the nail on the head about this attitude - the shallow "deconstruct gender!" analysis is inherently misogynistic. How else could it be that they consistently portray the feminine is inherently more fake, constructed, and worthy of destruction than the equally socially constructed masculinity?
the idea that quote unquote gender nonconformity is inherently ethically better because it "subverts" rather than "reinforces" is one thing that led me to be stuck repressing transness for years bc i thought not transitioning at all was a morally superior decision to transitioning and better for society
all it did was make me miserable and full of regrets
don't fall for this nonsense
you exist in the world to be a complete human being not to be a "brave" "deconstruction". your life is worth more than just a political statement at the expense of your happiness
June 1st
Listen, marketing-as-exploitation discussions aside, Rainbow Capitalism is, has been, and continues to be the canary in the coal mine of social acceptance for the queer community.
If you’ll all pardon my Americentrism for a moment, the amount, visibility, and flamboyance of Pride merch available in clothing, home goods, and comestibles stores is a DIRECT reflection of how safe it is to be queer in public in the United States.
How? Simple. Out groups aren’t profitable. If you’re not “acceptable” in the current social climate, big franchise businesses will not market to you. (Prime example - Look how quickly Target dropped all their Pride merch after having been wall-to-wall rainbows every June for almost a decade prior.)
Sure, capitalism sucks and being viewed as an exploitable marketing demographic isn’t a fun concept.
HOWEVER.
The grim truth is that being normalized enough to be considered profitable by corporations IS A GOOD THING in terms of the barometer of social acceptance.
Same thing goes for smaller businesses that throw kitschy Pride events or even just put a token rainbow flag in the window or somewhere inside the shop. That’s a level of acceptance that DID NOT EXIST thirty years ago, and I can tell you because I was there.
The fact that we can scoff and bitch about being an exploitable marketing demographic nowadays means we have made GIGANTIC strides since the 1990s. It also speaks to the fact that the drive and the conversation surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance are continuing. And getting louder.
You can be cynical about it if you want. But I will take a store that puts out lip-service rainbow merch over a world that pretends we don’t exist any day of the week. Because that will always mean something.
Sincerely, An Elder Queer
did chikorita ever end up decreasing the increase or was that another of bidens failed promises

Everybody get more anti war right now
What is even there to say? I can't keep waking up in a world where I read the news and I see schoolchildren bombed, millions of people displaced, old ladies carrying their cats and while their houses get turned into rubble, the waste of industry and human talent into bombs that shoot down other bombs.
Am I insane? what the fuck is going on?
Even the most just war of liberation is painful and regrettable, but you well know I'm not talking about that, we're watching first world countries sell weapons to feed endless war and just bombing targets like if it's a reflex act just what they do, the complete surrender of any hope of building a better world or coexisting and we're all treating this like it's just the natural state of things.
I'm sorry if I'm being dramatic but genuinely, get more anti war right now.
Warfare is not an inherent state of humanity, in any case, and it can and it will be abolished. I'm tired of people treating this like it's just the weather or nature. We know the material reasons behind war and they don't hold up and won't hold up forever.

peoples reactions to ethel cain posting a nude tamer than many in public art museums reminds me of that post on here where ppl were saying they saw old topless women at pride and because they didn't consent and because their bodies were undesirable, it was a form of sexual harassment.
same shit here of ppl saying it's sexual harassment to just experience a queer woman's nonsexualized body existing because they view it as inherently predatory and then thats amplified even moreso by transmisogyny. like man we're never gonna fuckin free the nipple at this rate. it's some real Right To Comfort bullshit to think that trans women need the consent of.. i guess everyone on earth? before daring to exist in their bodies?
also this is more of an aside but in general i wish everyone could just be normal about the human body. i think everyone needs to go to a nude beach or a communal bath or something similar at least once in their lives.
every now and then someone pops up with a think piece about the term “gay panic” which is whatever but they always seem to imply that people saw the gay panic defence and said “oh that would make a cute term to reclaim about being nervous i’m gonna steal that” instead of the infinitely more likely explanation that it’s simply linguistic convergent evolution
i promise that 14 year old wasn’t trying to “reclaim the gay panic defence” or whatever you’re accusing them of and was most likely shortening “i panicked because i was gay” in a way that linguistically makes sense to do
the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.
