my family is lucky enough to own a 26 acre mountain property, log cabin and all. Most people would go up there and think that it is fairly pristine nature. There’s the cabin, and a few dirt roads for 4-wheelers, but the surrounding woods look untouched.
But we actually carefully maintain that nature. We cut down the deadfall. We pull invasive plants. We trim the elderberry bushes. We get more animals than almost anywhere else on the mountain because we put up salt licks and water troughs.
some of these same things are true of national parks. A lot of places that you think of as “untouched wilderness” are influenced heavily by human care and maintenance. And this isn’t a bad thing. We are animals too. In many ways, our ecosystems depend on us to keep them healthy. Many “wild” plants that are useful for food or building materials are actually semi-domesticated because indigenous groups cared for them and encouraged their growth so they do better with human care.
we have a place in nature. We just need to be conscious of our actions.
EDIT: since this post took off, I thought I should add some sources

Woman in front of me in line at the caffe nero changed my life yesterday when she ordered a prosciutto sandwich but pronounced "prosciutto" like it rhymed with mosquito. "Pruh-squee-toe."
I heard this person say "uhhhh yeah can I get a prosquito sandwich please?" and I knew I'd never be the same. Prosquito. Prosquito. Its everything to me. I haven't been able to stop saying that lmfao. This is my spinch. This is my bagel and creem cheems. This is my ranibow sprimkle.
friends and family are already tired of me going crazy over prosquito but its so special to me

you know it's interesting how jewish studies does not like the word "assimilation" (understandable, not a useful way to describe imperfect acculturation and less-than-total social integration) but then also just forgets to explore the ways that the paradigm of assimilation continues to shape jewish identity, culture, historical memory, politics, etc.... stop saying "they mean acculturation" when they arguably MEAN to invoke a process by which jews are collectively destroyed. idk maybe i think too highly of people but imo when jews refer to other jews as "assimilated" it's a political accusation, not a demonstration that they don't actually know how language or politics or sociology work
and actually. even when it is used in the context of "bad history" it demonstrates an intuitive understanding of the cultural violence jews have experienced and still do experience (including/especially in "emancipated" contexts) that is often unacknowledged by "good history"
like maybe we could acknowledge that the ways a community remembers its history, intellectually refined or not, is shaped by its experience of said history. or something.
How are disabled and interracial illegal???
Interracial marriage was outlawed for the longest time, and disabled people lose government benefits when they get married so they cannot have reassurance that they will continue to LIVE if they get married.
Story time: my mom is white, dad is black. They’ve been together twenty four years, married for twenty three. When my parents were dating they did it on the low TO KEEP MY DAD SAFE.
My mom’s parents said “We don’t care who you love.” At that point she’d only ever brought home white guys. She brought my dad home-her mother called her a nigger lover and damned the relationship as much as possible. Her father grew around his prejudices after I was born but never apologized, just wasn’t a blatant fuck.
The day she introduced my father to her family was the last time she spoke to her mother for over twenty years. When I was getting sick and she called and asked her mother and grandmother if anyone in the family had anything strange happen similar what I was going through they told her “it’s because you married a black man. You made your bed, you lie in it.”
Cops pulled them over all the time and asked my mom IF SHE WAS OKAY AND IF SHE NEEDED HELP BECAUSE MY FATHER-A BLACK MAN-WAS DRIVING A 100 POUND WHITE WOMAN AROUND. HE WAS HARRASSED AND THREATED WITH ARREST.
My father ended up getting into a fight in self defence because some entitled hick decided he didn’t like seeing a black man and white woman in the bar together. Thankfully other patrons helped my father but he still couldn’t go to the er for his injuries. My mom patched him up and they were terrified the cops would take him away.
THEIR BEST FRIEND GOT LICENSED TO MARRY THEM SO THEY COULD ACTUALLY TIE THE KNOT BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WOULD AND CITED JIM CROW ERA LAW AS TO WHY.
When shopping with just me my father wouldn’t hold my hand if there was a group around. Why? I’m far lighter than him and people had stopped and asked him “whose child is that?” Or “little girl where’s your parents?” and were stunned when I grinned and pointed at my dad and proudly proclaimed “my daddy’s right here.” You know where else mixed kids couldn’t hold their parents hands? Apartheid South Africa. We live in fucking FLORIDA.
So yeah. Some history for you.

Hey OP, is it okay if I hate this?
Oh and in b4 the identity politics brigade comes to yell at me:
I am fully aware that women frequently aren't believed either
I am fully aware that men also use the system and false allegations against women
I am fully aware of the statistics and the gendered power imbalance in society
I have personally seen numerous cases of the opposite and I am well aware of the myriad of ways that abusive men hurt their female partners and relatives
Two things can be true at once:
We live in a misogynistic society that doesn't listen to women on a good day, let alone when she's just gone through hell and doesn't have a press statement ready for the police, and so there are tons of female victims who are revictimized by the system; AND
We live in a chauvenistic society that downplays women's physical strength, sexual strength, and/or willingness to engage in any number of other abusive behaviors and that drastically overestimates men's capabilities and invulnerability. This leads to male victims not being believed, especially if their abuser is a woman.
Are you seeing a pattern here?
Let me spell it out for you: abusers are often adept at using whatever tools they have available to them, and victims frequently struggle to be heard and respected especially when in crisis. Society in general really really sucks at identifying interpersonal power dynamics and abusive patterns, and sucks even more at intervening in a timely and compassionate way.
Anyway, my parting shot is this: remember that while individuals may benefit from and leverage systemic privileges, these are not absolute principles and apply primarily on a large population scale rather than individually in interpersonal relationships, especially interpersonal violence.
free resources to write a novel in 2024
hello hello! it's me, rach!
as the new year approaches, many of us set goals and resolutions - myself included. one of my goals for 2024 is to write a novel (I've been procrastinating on this for quite a long time now). i assume that some of you might have the same goal, that's why I'm writing this post today.
over 2023 i've been releasing some freebies for authors just like me, so I thought I could compile my favorites in this post. hope you find this useful :)
1) the writer's workbook
this workbook has over 60 exercises to help you develop characters, scenarios, etc. if you're ever stuck, I'm pretty sure this workbook will be your best friend.
2) author's corner (notion template)
this is the most downloaded freebie in my shop! it is a notion dashboard with everything you need to organize your writing and has some templates included (like scrivener)!!
3) another notion template
this one has two themes you can choose from: cottage-core and dark academia. they're very similar to the previous template, but this one is more recent and I added some new features. feel free to explore both and pick the one you like the most.
4) the author's journal
this is a cute printable with 20 pages that will help you stay on track and manage your social media accounts as a writer who shares their work online. you can also register what you're currently writing and your personal research and resources.
5) plan your book printable
this is a 6-page printable for you to fill out and plan your book easily and effectively.
6) excel sheet to organize tasks & word-count
this is a simple excel sheet, but it is very effective for keeping track of your tasks & word-count of your novels. also, it is 100% customizable to your liking!
that's all for now! feel free to explore my gumroad shop where I have plenty of freebies to grab! also, don't forget to subscribe so that you never miss any opportunity to get a goodie for free :)
hope this post was useful!
have a nice day,
rach
my grandpa was a good man. and it really wasnt his fault - recreationally lying to kids is a proud family tradition - but he told me, once, that cutting a worm in half resulted in two worms.
i think he said it so i'd be more morally okay with fishing? i actually dont remember the context.
point was, he told me this, and he understimated (by a very large margin) how much i liked worms. i was a worm boy. very wormy. and after hearing that, i went home, and i dug through the garden, flipped over every rock, did everything i could to gather as many worms as i could, and then i uh.
i cut them all in half. every worm i could find. all of them. with scissors.
i then took this pile of split worms, and i put them in a box with a bit of lettuce and some water and stuff and went to bed expecting to double my worms overnight. i have math autism, so i had a vague understanding that if i did this just a few times in a row, i would eventually have a completely unreasonable amount of worms.
i was very excited to become this plane's worm emperor.
(i think i was...six?)
anyway, i did not become the inheritor of the worm crown. i instead woke up to a box of dead worms and cried. a lot. i got diagnosed with panic attacks as a teenager, but i think i had them as a kid, i just had no idea what they were. i was kind of processing that a.) i had killed what i had assumed was every single worm in my yard, and thus would have no more worms, and b). i was going to like, worm hell.
(six year babylon spent a lot of time worrying about god.)
so i kind of freaked out, and i climbed a tree, because god can only smite you if you're touching the ground (?) and i sat up there mostly inconsolable until my mom came out and asked, hey, what's up? what happened?
so i explained to her that i had killed all of the worms, forever, and was also Damned, and she took me to the compost pile, and we dug for all of five seconds and found like twenty more worms.
the compost pile was full of worms.
and she told me that a). there were more worms, and we could put them back under rocks and stuff and recolonize our yard and b). that one day, i would die, and i would go to heaven, and i would be able to talk to the worms, and i would be able to tell them all that i was very sorry, and that i killed them on accident out of excessive Love, and that they would forgive me, because worms have six hearts and no malice.
at that point, i think i was sixty percent tear-snot by weight, and i had no choice but to gather enough worms that i could hug them. which my mom helped with. and then after that she helped me put some worms back under each rock.
and for my epilogue: i spent a significant portion of my childhood in trees. and for many years after, even when my mom didnt know i was watching, i would catch her giving the space under the rocks a light spritz with the hose. not because she loved worms.
but because she loved me.
Wait, you're telling me I spent the latter half of my childhood deathly terrified of worms for NOTHING? That was a lie?
huh. you viewed worms entirely mythical regenerative powers as something to be feared. i viewed it as an opportunity. something something The Duality of Man.
i am considering that fear produced a better outcome for you and the worm than love did. this feels like an important thought.
a few years ago there was an exposé in the intercept about how, according to the fbi, police departments are so thoroughly infiltrated by white supremacists that it's policy to avoid working with them when possible. just something to think about
Bureau policies have been crafted to take into account the active presence of domestic extremists in U.S. police departments.
I found the article and... jesus christ.
yeah, the FBI put out a report that showed active purposeful infiltration of both the military and police by white supremacists. The FBI included a list of steps to take in order to help prevent this including things like updated lists of identifying tattoos and specific screening measures. The military said fuck we thought we were getting them all, thank you, and started implementing all the recommended procedures almost immediately.
The U.S. Police Union wrote the FBI back a letter that basically said “fuck you you can’t tell us who we can and can’t hire” and then the funding for that FBI investigation got suddenly yanked.
Also, holy shit read the article; it is very thorough
not now. mommys making a 0 note post
A thing about the discourse of where antisemitism and antizionism interact is that
1) a fair amount of antizionists are neonazis, Islamists, Arab supremacists, and communists who believe ethnic self-identity is a barrier to World Revolution, who are just *barely* concealing it (if that)
2) a fair amount of antizionists base their antizionism on a denial of an element (or elements) of Jewish self-identity (denial of Jewish ethnicity, denial of ethnogenesis in the Levant), and a whole lot of Jews find non-Jews essentially arguing that they should get to define what Jews are and aren’t offensive (and antisemitic)
3) there are a fair amount of antizionists whose antizionism comes from a deep hatred of an element or elements of what they determine is evil about “western” society, and for some reason they have decided to obsessively focus on Israel and ignore other “western” countries. This may be genuinely not antisemitic, but it’s still fucked up and weird.
i’m still of the opinion that it is possible to be antizionist without being antisemitic, but this post is a great explanation for why that’s not usually the case. to be antizionist without being antisemitic, you have to have an in depth understanding of what zionism actually is. you have to read the literature, understand that there are different zionist movements and theories, and most importantly, you have to understand the problem that zionism is claiming to solve. because if your antizionism does not clearly articulate why zionism does not solve that problem and why your solution does, then you are not antizionist you are antisemitic.
because at the end of the day, zionism is answering the question “what do we do with the jews?” gentiles’ responses to this question have typically been “idk just kill them or expel them or oppress them” and zionism’s answer is “give us a state so we can protect ourselves — away from you.” if you disagree with that answer (and many jews do too!) you have to be able to give your own answer. because if your response to “what do we do with the jews?” is “i don’t fucking care, that’s not my problem” then you don’t actually disagree with zionism you disagree with the notion that the rest of the world should be held responsible for its role in the thousands of years of brutal persecution, ethnic cleansings, and genocides that lead to zionist ideology being conceived in the first place. a lot of people like to say things didn’t start on october 7th, and that’s correct. but they didn’t start in 1948 either. the political extremism present in israel today is the culmination of thousands of years of pain and death and fear and helplessness, and if you don’t understand that then you will never understand zionism or how to make it fall out of favor.
