A portrait of Shanidar I, a Neanderthal man who experienced multiple debilitating injuries that would have left him severely disabled. Despite these injuries and thanks to the care of his community, he lived to be between 30-45, which is considered elderly for Neanderthals - a reminder of how deeply rooted compassion and altruism are in our origins.

Another older painting I never got around to posting. Iirc I was watching a Shadow of the Colossus play through and wanted to draw something big, so a sauropod it was! I want to do more dramatic angles of sauropods in the future, but I’m proud of how this one turned out!

I am just about done with my undergrad, so I am hoping to start posting more regularly! I have a backlog of digital art that I did and never ended up sharing, so expect those in the future! For now, here’s some sketches I did at work :)

I just found this photo of a Phineas Gage snowman I made when I was 12. Somehow, despite this, the autism diagnosis was still a shock .

More practice with the charcoal and pencil brushes - I’ve had a cryolophosaurus as my icon for literally years, so I think it’s well past time I actually drew one! I’m really proud of the detailing on the head.

I was messing around with the charcoal and pencil brushes on procreate and I got a little carried away, so have some dinosaur portraits!

Do we have any records of fossil dinosaurs afflicted with illnesses? I guess fossils wouldn't really make it easy to preserve dinos that died from proto-flu, but what about stuff like cancers or malformations?

We do actually! Paleopathology is a whole field and there are tons of specimens that showcase signs of illnesses and injuries! It's really cool actually. there are so many examples that I can't even find the one I wanted to share as a prime one (it was an ornithopod that had a whole cancer study done, can't find it anywhere)

but infections were common and there's tons of studies about the signs of those in fossils as well!

Sue is actually a great example! There are holes in her jaw that iirc are indicative of something similar to modern day trichomonas. She also might have suffered from gout

Here's a couple of my favourites!

This is a paper on the Dilophosaurus skeleton found with developmental osteodysplasia, with an arm that had been severely broken and healed in a distorted shape

This is the description of Spiclypeus, a genus of ceratopsid dinosaur represented by an individual with multiple injuries that became infected, including a puncture wound in the frill and what may be a chronic tuberculosis infection in the forelimb. Despite this, the individual lived for at least 7-10 years and does not appear to have died of its illness.

And this paper is on the first internal parasites ever found in a dinosaur, a titanosaur with acute osteomyelitis caused by blood parasites found withing the vascular channels of the animal's bones.

Paleopathology is such a cool field! One of my favorite examples is Dolly, a sauropod who had a respiratory infection severe enough to cause lesions on some of its vertebrae.

The pattern of the lesions is super interesting, and a really neat example of the similarities between sauropod and bird respiratory systems!
