M60 Unveiled
In September 1957, Popular Science magazine ran a two-page spread showcasing the US Army’s new light machine gun, the M60. The article begins by evoking the image of the Browning Automatic Rifle wielding GI often seen in war movies before mocking the BAR’s weight. The article refers to the M60 by its experimental designation, the T161E3 despite being adopted on 30th January, 1957.

Popular Science then runs through the new M60′s features including ‘light’ weight, quick change barrel, relatively new 7.62x51mm ammunition, controllable rate of fire and lighter recoil. The short article also describes how the M60s barrel can be changed and how the only tool needed to disassemble the weapon is a cartridge.
Interestingly at the bottom of the page the article also shows a Vickers M1904 and a Hotchkiss M1914, comparing their weights to the ‘new gun’.
