Intended as a place to ramble about horror. Mostly movies, with a few books, games, tv shows mentioned, and original horror tinged art! Also rbing other's horror musings bc I love hearing other people's thoughts and talking about horror! I might set up a queue eventually, but for now I rb as I see.

About formatting tags: for games/books/shows I'll just do the name. If it's a movie I'll do name and date e.g. #dracula 1931. So if you're trying to not get spoilt on a specific movie then you can filter it out e.g. #the substance 2025

I WILL TRULY BE POSTING LOTS OF PLOT DETAILS ABOUT HORROR MOVIES - so proceed with caution if you seriously don't want to be spoilt. I'll try write the name of the movie in the first few lines of any post I make... but I made this blog specifically to ramble! So it is what it is!

Saying that, I'll put my posts under a readmore if it's a recent movie that just came out in the last month. This won't be relevant for book/game/show posting because I neither read or play anything recent, and almost never watch shows lmao.

it's just that. it's so fucking important that the linguist bails on the expedition before the novel. the written word fails in area x. it becomes one of the most chilling modes of cosmic incomprehensibility in area x. the biologist's written account is a self-admitted failure. she is nameless. where lies the strangling fruit is all the more terrifying for the fact that it is in a recognizable language with an inscrutable meaning. the journals are ROTTING in the lighthouse, ink running and turning into decaying organic matter along with everything else. no one is named. the novel begins with a pointless semantic debate that everyone is fiercely invested in regarding the tower/tunnel nomenclature. no one has a name. they are instrumentalized to their professions. when she encounters the crawler, the biologist immediately compares it to an encounter with the "destroyer of worlds," a "more apt" name for the starfish than its scientific nomenclature.

"what an inadequate name i had chosen for it—the crawler."

this novel is just as (if not more) concerned with how area x heralds the failure of language, not just the failure of scientific inquiry

"that was... really... sneaky" girl. no tf it wasn't?? you literally pulled the knife out of this man's back, and instead of using it to finish the fight, which you very well could have, you flicked your eyes over his face, dropped the knife off to the side, pulled him closer by his sweater, and proceeded to do nothing but make intense eye contact with him, and then do nothing when he started manhandling you around. what did you THINK was going to happen??

colqhoun having tuberculosis before turning is really significant to me bc its associations in art tend to include a heightened sense of vitality and eroticism.

in illness as metaphor susan sontag writes that ‘TB was - still is - thought to produce spells of euphoria, increased appetite, exacerbated sexual desire… Having TB was imagined to be an aphrodisiac, and to confer extraordinary powers of seduction.’

watching ravenous with this in mind, we see a lot of parallels between the popular depiction of TB (esp. following the quote above) and the vampiric cannibalism of this film. so its another metaphor the audience can view the film through. its also worth tying the erotic depictions of TB to how we view colqhoun and boyds sexuality. cannibalism is interlinked with erotic desire in ravenous. colqhoun relishing in it, and boyd repressing it. notably depictions of TB in art often create metaphors of BOTH an excess or heightened state of eroticism AND a repression of sexuality. (again read illness as metaphor and the magic mountain if you are incherested…)

i think its significant that colqhoun brings up his diagnosis in the first seduction scene, hes contrasting the suffering he felt inside the illness with how comparatively ‘virile’ and alive he feels now, but he still relishes vocalising every syllable of the word and presenting boyd with his story of a typically romanticised illness. using TB as a tool to seduce. (‘…TB was also thought to make the sufferer sexy.’ sontag)

being purposeful w my language because i dont really want to romanticise the illness in my own reading of this film. just because. i dont wanna. but i found the connections interesting
