“He is always on the brink of suicide … because he seeks salvation through the routine formulas suggested to him by the society in which he lives.” — Umberto Eco on Charlie Brown
so i hauve covid rn and i must say, American cold medicine is the absolute bees knees. You go to a UK pharmacy and they tenderly press like eight (8) paracetamol into the palm of your hand... God FORBID you're sick in France, i had to scour every pharmacy in Paris for something that wasn't HOMEOPATHIC PASTILLES. meanwhile last night i took the last of my stash of Nyquil that expired in 2019 and it was like getting hit by a fucking baseball bat (affectionate). press X to timeskip. LOVE me a cheeky little medically induced coma. you can really feel that it's a precursor to meth. i know that everything is fucking awful over there my friedns and my heart goes out to every one of you but if you need one small bright light of national pride in this time of strife please know that i envy you your cold medicine every day
i once took an american antihistamine pill just a basic one for seasonal allergies and i had to immediately lay down and while doing so i vividly hallucinated that i was a steerage passenger on the titanic resigned to my death as my cabin filled up rapidly with water. then i blacked out and when i woke up again my allergies were gone for the entire season.
The Hat Man is our greatest export
The first simulated image of a black hole was calculated with an IBM 7040 computer using 1960 punch cards and hand-plotted by French astrophysicist Jean-Pierre Luminet in 1978.
the romance of hand-plotting. this guy looked at the numbers and drew each of those dots manually, and the image emerged. we can only imagine how he felt
I am wildly more obsessed with this than I expected to be

I want to see the vampire who lives in this. I bet his name is Chad or Hunter.
And he's ready to crack open a boy with the cold ones.
This is the most beautiful scientific diagram I've ever seen.
Also a great example of why pink is a tint of red, but also a completely different color. Erbium? Neodymium? So beautiful.

Pedestrian traffic lights
Ooooh, we have a bunch of really fancy pedestrian traffic lights in Germany! I need to share:
Starting off with the difference between formerly Eastern German traffic lights (upper images) and formerly Western German traffic lights (lower images):
The city of Erfurt had some additions, like an umbrella or a heart:

last week I was deep in the trenches ploughing through work and mid-afternoon realised I'd neglected to open the blinds and the room was a little dim, so I got up to do that and discovered that a car had flipped onto its roof directly outside my flat and the entire street was closed and flooded with emergency service while they dragged someone out of the vehicle and packed them into an ambulance. so now every time I open the blinds I'm a little like the dog with the ham sandwich bush. what the fuck could it be today.

Thinking about how Han Solo is apparently a regular visitor to Tatooine and Different First Meeting AUs... if Han Solo had fucked up and gotten into horrible debt earlier, maybe Jabba might've forced him to become a podracer or something. He IS a hell of a pilot. (He's maybe even a little Force sensitive about it!) Humans don't tend to have the reflexes for podracing, but that's fine, because the crowd likes a good deadly explosion every now and again.
The funniest stupid thing that could happen here is some podracer promoter looking at Han Solo and going, "If that's fake, that's a stupid ass name. If that's real, that's stupid ass name; never use your real name. We've got to get you a gimmick, kid. We've got to make up a persona. We're gonna sell a storyline, so you can do better for yourself than just helping Jabba fix the races to get the most of the sports betting money."
(Download the new Duel of the Fans app for live betting on wins and crashes today!!!)
"There's only been one human podracer of any note here, some really tiny kid about 30 years ago, and people still talk about it. So we're gonna say you're him all grown up and coming home. We're gonna build on something here. No, I don't know how humans age and I don't care. You'll be wearing a helmet most of the time, and then we'll just say you look good for your age. Humans are ugly, who can tell? Kid, we're going to make you a STAR."
And fine, whatever, it works to start out with. Han is mainly focused on not dying, both on the racetracks and at Jabba's terrible, non-stop parties he's forced to attend sometimes. (Boba Fett SUCKS; Han would shove that guy into the sarlacc pit if he could get away with it.) He's GOT to find a way to get himself and Chewie off of this awful sand planet...
And then this belligerent teenage farmkid shows up like, "I heard about your podraces on the radio! Are you my DAD?!?!" And also two Star Destroyers are suddenly looming overhead, full of Imperial Security Bureau agents AND Imperial Inquisitors, demanding to know how Jedi General Anakin Skywalker is alive and why he's making dramatic villainous speeches kayfabe-style about how he's going win the Mos Espa Belt for humans everywhere on the Coruscanti Galactic Sports Network's Outer Rim Podracing channel.
Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating
@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally
Source (non Aboriginal)
And a quote I picked out from a longer interview with an Aboriginal local elder about the area where he touched on the history
Source (the rest of the interview is really interesting and all transcribed, have a look if you're curious)
This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.
as a gilgar gunditj woman, i was not expecting to see my culture on my dash.
thank you for spreading our words and treating our culture with respect.
Star Wars Time Travel AU
Vader does go back in time
He doesn’t swear loyalty to Padme, Obi-Wan or Ahsoka
He swears absolute loyalty to Captain Rex
You are one of the Cuy'val Dar. Your job is training small clones of an old friend to be very dangerous adults. You do not like this job, but it pays well and keeps you quietly squirreled away from That One Crimelord You Pissed Off.
The Grim Reaper just blew a hole in the wall and swore loyalty to a nameless toddler.
The Kaminoan that tried to approach has been cut in half by a red lightsaber.
The entire room is full of crying children.
Fett just showed up and is being threatened by the Black Hole of a Sentient Being in the middle of the room to stay the fuck away.
The blaster shot from Dred Priest accomplished jackshit, and was in fact bounced back to kill the man.
Isabet just lost her head, literally, trying to get revenge on the absolute motherfucker in the middle of the room.
The kids are still crying, including the nameless toddler that this asshole declared his new lord and master.
What do you do?
are you going to kick him out? no, no you aren’t, but you do need to show him how to hold the kid before he drops him and decides it’s your fault and you lose your head to
#Vader swears his allegiance to a toddler and then doesn’t know what to do when said toddler can’t actually give him instructions#he’s a whole mess and Jango can’t even get rid of him#honestly he wishes it were a jedi at this point (via @adreamfromnevermore)
Jango decides to use the shortcut “Phone a Friend”! It’s questionably effective. The “friend” is Dooku.
Dooku sees the half-assed photo of Vader threatening someone with a red saber and goes “this is obviously one of Sidious’s ploys to fuck with me and/or a competing apprentice” and decides to handle it personally. He does not call Sidious about this, because that would be losing.
Dooku gets to Kamino. Vader is intensely incomprehensible. They have a big fancy battle.
Dooku dies.
Vader is just carrying around Rex on one uncomfortably metal-clad hip this entire time. The main reason Jango’s still alive, really, is that he has babycare advice, and tells Vader things like “You should probably put some padding in that sling, your armor is hurting him” and then Vader just. Does that.
Single Dad Jango is only not dead because he has Single Dad Advice.
The Kaminoans contact the Jedi Temple about The Situation That Is Vader, who won’t fucking leave, because apparently Rex will only be happy if he stays with his brothers, and so that means Vader must stay as well.
The Jedi show up, utterly confused about many things, but generally in agreement that this is an absolutely terrible situation and probably requires a council master to handle because, like… Sith. And an army. And Fett. And Mandalorians.
There’s a lot going on, is the point, and none of it should be handled by a knight.
The Jedi in question are Mace and Plo.
Vader has a grudge against Mace but he pretends he doesn’t because that would be so passe and beneath him.
Vader does not have a grudge against Plo. He’s actually quite neutral on Plo, for Ahsoka reasons, and mostly just tells Plo to go handle children.
Plo would love to play with the kids, but Plo is here to help Mace fight a fucking Sith Lord.
The Sith Lord is not impressed. He is actually quite busy, standing dramatically in front a window and holding tiny Rex, informing him in grand phrases and sweeping gestures that the universe will be his for the taking.
(Rex is busy chewing on a toddler toy.)
Jango is ready to just throw in the towel. He signed up for a lot, but This Bullshit wasn’t it.
Sidious still hasn’t received word from Literally Anyone about this.
#ani ANI #youre scaring the CHILDREN #the visuals of vader carrying baby rex on one hip while saying things like #‘my master there is a vastness in this galaxy that will be under your command’ #‘know that i will do all it takes that it falls into your grasp’ #and rex is just gnawing on a star shaped teething toy #jango watching this tall black lunatic carying his son: CONCERNED NOISES (via @chocmarss)
There are literal tears streaming down my face at this 😂😂😂
OK this is the best AU yet.
