for those unaware of the situation, an indian engineer, activist, innovator, education reformer, and environment activist who refused to patent his inventions, so that people could use them freely, and built a free school for underpriviliged kids, went on a hunger strike to demand accountability from the indian government for the massive amount of exam paper leaks that have occurred during this current government's rule. his name is sonam wangchuk, and today, on the 20th day of his hunger strike, he was forcefully apprehended by the delhi police, and taken into custody. so far, we have no idea where they've taken him, and during his apprehending, a large group of men forced their way onto the dais he was lying down on(because he's no longer capable of even sitting up in his current state), and held up screens to prevent people from even seeing or recording what they were doing to him behind them.
as a result of the latest paper leak-which was a medical entrance exam-20+ kids committed suicide. this man saw their plight, and decided to use a form of peaceful protest, that indian freedom fighters used, to fight against colonial rule. it's something that has barely gotten any media coverage, as most news channels and newspapers are tightly controlled by the government. there were plans to conduct a peaceful walk to the parliament, and before that could proceed, the police-armed in tactical gear-kidnapped a frail old man, who can't even stand without assistance. this is plain and simple fascism, please talk about it on your various social media platforms to put some pressure on the indian government for the immediate release of this man.
update on this post: we now know he's being kept at safdarjung hospital, and has not been allowed to leave, or have access to his phone or the internet. they have essentially arrested him for practicing his right to peaceful protest. a colleague of mine who works at safdarjung, has not been able to meet him or check on his condition.
for those unaware today india experienced one of its biggest protests in half a decade. there were protests all over the nation for various causes but the major one was in delhi. all we asked for was the resignation of the education minister because he's failed the students of this nation time & time again. but we were met with brutality, the police had barricaded the main site of protest (jantar mantar). metro stations were shutdown, the public was restrained from reaching the protest site and all the adjoining areas had signal jammers to make sure the crowd had no access to constant updates. they had us blocked from all the sides. they were lathi (baton) charging students from one side & releasing tear gas from the other. you couldn't walk 100 m on streets without having a tear gas shell thrown at you. there were many students, women & kids bleeding — some from their head. some couldn't walk anymore. the police had removed their nameplates, covered their faces & acted with full impunity to resort to unprecedented levels of violence. they were pelting stones at us, beating up people for no reason, forcefully detaining them and attacking us constantly with tear gas & rubber bullets. they wouldn't let you exit either. the crowd was peaceful & looking out for each other yet they were met with violence. i made a friend who was all alone & she asked to join me & my friend because a policeman wouldn't leave her alone. he constantly prodded her for personal info, invited her back to the jeep saying they have food there, wouldn't stop following her around. you couldn't call or ask anyone for help, we were left to fend for ourselves & be on a constant lookout if you did not want to be beaten up to death by police. all for what? asking a resignation? shame on this country.
If you heard about the protest going on in Delhi, India, you also need to hear about the police brutality.
The delhi police had a very violent response to a PEACEFUL PROTEST by the CJP who started a march towards the parliament of India on 20th July 2026. Which is still ongoing as we speak. The youth of the nation, neet aspirants, neet VICTIMS, parents who lost their child to neet, and everyone who has a conscience gathered at jantar mantar for a march, as a peaceful protest, demanding the resignation of the Education Minister of India. Who still hasn't taken any accountability for what has happened, accountability for all the student deaths, but left a tweet saying it was a political tactic performed by the opposition party and that the students were being exploited.
Sonam wangchuk who has been on a hunger strike for more than 20 days, was forcefully taken by the police, away from the streets, and now is currently hospitalized.
The Delhi police performed "latti charge" on protesters who weren't doing anything but just sitting on the road protesting. They had iron nails on the lattis (which they say is false news and just rumours despite having evidence). They were so brutal with their charge that many protestors have suffered serious injuries. Protestors were hit on their heads when latti charge only allows them to hit below the waist.
The police had no reason to use tear gas bombs, but they did anyways. They started using explosives in the tear gas, if you pick up a thrown tear gas it will explode. There is proof of injuries because of this. They cracked a 12year old girl's skull during the latti charge.
Unsurprisingly, the delhi police showed up to the protest with NO NAME TAGS. The law requires all informed officers to have a name tag. When the media asked them about it, a lady police officer said it was because it was too hot. That was their reason. The police have also destroyed their own vehicles to blame it on the protestors. Some women were seen to even be sexually harrassed by the police.
This is the police that is supposed to protect the citizens.
The youth of the nation have taken matters into their own hands. A lot of food parcels are being sent to the protest site every day. The Sikh community has travelled all the way to Delhi to support the students. Protests are going on in many states AGAINST the police brutality happening in Delhi, and for the resignation of the educational minister.
And for everyone saying "start being violent" "they deserve nepal treatment", this is the police' response to a PEACEFUL PROTEST, for a violent protest I kid you not they WILL bring out the big guns. It will turn into another Jallianwala Bagh incident.
Everyone is calling these protestors anti nationalist and terrorists, then I guess we need the home minister to resign, because how can he let so many anti nationalists in the country? Every single person in the protest is fighting for a better future for the nation.
india is not a democracy anymore.
everyone needs to hear about the situation in india right now. the youth of this nation are going through hell and back to protect the foundations that our country was built on in the first place, while the adults who are supposed to actually be in charge try to silence our voices.
NEET, which is an exam taken by millions of students per year and is the ONLY gateway for medical admissions across the country, had its papers leaked. so many took their lives because this exam meant everything for their future. and NTA, the agency who conducts this exam, was not held accountable.
there was national backlash. cockroach janta party (initially a satirical political party formed by abhijeet dipke in retaliation to the remarks of the chief justice of india calling the youth "cockroaches" and "parasites of society") started protests at jantar mantar, demanding the resignation of the union education minister, dharmendra pradhan. the movement also asked for ten million inr (~100,000 usd) in compensation for the families of students who died by suicide and wanted NTA be held accountable.
sonam wangchuk, a climate activist and education reformer, also went on a hunger strike at jantar mantar to protest against this corruption in india's higher education system. his fast began on june 28, demanding the resignation of the union education minister. his fast lasted for 20 days until delhi police FORCIBLY removed him and admitted him to safdarjung hospital on july 18.
because of this, cockroach janta party announced "chalo sansad," a march to the parliament beginning on june 20th, 9:00 am ist. but the police seems to be responding with water cannons, mobile jammers, and baton charge. all of this, because of a peaceful protest led by people no older than 30.
and yet there has been absolutely no indian media coverage about a movement that spans the entirety of this nation. so, please, if you see this, keep talking about us. we will not let those old bastards stoop any lower than they've already had. we will not let them ruin our country any further. we will not be silenced
