Inuyasha sighed, but he was still grinning. âFine, crazy wench, have it your way.â He reached back and flipped his long silver mane of hair over his shoulder to reveal the wounds. Kagome gasped.
âTheyâreâ theyâre so small!â Kagome said, blinking in shock at his back. The marks sheâd just cleaned just a short while ago seemed to be closing; they had looked like gouges before, she was sure. Now the wounds were more like long thin slices. Even the places where skin had flapped away from red muscle had healed significantly. âBut thatâs impossible!â
âKeh. I told you Iâd heal.â Inuyasha groused. âNo need to squawk so loud itâs not a fuckinâ miracle.â
âSays you!â Kagome said, still staring. Hesitantly, she reached out one hand to trace around one of the wounds. He shivered as her fingers traced the pink, healing skin, and she pulled her hand back. âSorry.â She said, but he turned so quickly she hardly saw him move, catching her hand before she could complete the retreat. His eyes were still golden, but they burned into her. âQuit apologizing,â he growled, âIâm not⊠that didnât hurt. I ain't that fragile.â
âObviously,â Kagome murmured, heart fluttering. Why did he keep looking at her like that? The intensity had made sense before, when they were being attacked, or burying the body, but nowâŠ?
âWhat are you?â The words flew out of her mouth without thought, and Kagome instantly wished she could pull them back. His expression closed up like a cave-in, the sudden switch so dramatic that it felt like a loss, âIâm sorry, I shouldnât haveââ
âNothing youâve ever met before.â He said, and his voice was suddenly solemn. âNothing you will ever meet again, if I have anything to do with it.â He turned away from her to walk towards the silent, dark calli.
âIâm not afraid of you.â Kagome clutched her hands together and pressed them to her stomach to try and tame the wild fluttering. âIâm not. I never will be.â

The voice sighed, and Kagome narrowed her eyes at nothing. âYou canât expect me to just stay in here,â she insisted, âhow did you survive? How long have you been here, anyway? Did the dragon take you from your home too? You said it sleeps a lot⊠did it take you recently?â the idea that the stranger might have been a prisoner for a long time made Kagome sad, though she knew absolutely nothing about the owner of the voice. â Maybe heâs terribleâ maybe he helps the dragon lull confused women into a false sense of security so itâs easier to eat them!âÂ
âI have been here my whole life,â the voice rasped, and Kagome froze, âWhat? Here ? With the dragon?âÂ
There was a shuffling sound, somewhere on the other side of the rocks, and Kagome panicked; âNo! What are you doing? Donât leave me here!âÂ
âYouâll be fine,â the voice said, and it was clearly farther away now, she had to strain to make out the words. Panic gripped her, as tightly as the dragon had, âPlease!â She called again, scrambling towards the place where the sound had come from, despite the ache in her body and head, âPlease!âÂ
âIâllâ look, Iâll come back, ok?â The voice said, a thread of panic in the words. Kagome pressed herself to the wall where the voice had been loudest, feeling along the rocks blindly in the shadows, when he spoke again he sounded closer again; âIâll come back in a while. Youâll be safe, justâ just wait here, ok? And quit crying.âÂ
âPromise me!â She called, her hands running uselessly over the solid wall, âPromise you wonât leave me!âÂ

Chapter Ten of Nextlahualtin is UP
The sun was up by the time Inuyashaâs wounds were cleaned. The moment she declared him done the god-man launched himself into the creek again. He had to crouch to splash water over his back, shoulders and hair, as the stream wasnât nearly deep enough. When he returned to the bank he wrung out his hair and shook like a dog. Kagome gasped as he sprayed her with cold creekwater, then laughedâ âAnd here I thought those were cat ears!â
The glare he gave her was surprisingly forceful. âWhat the fuck is that supposed to mean?â  Â
Kagome held up her hands in self-defense, âNothing! Forget I mentioned it.âÂ
âKeh,â He waded out of the stream again and surveyed the treeline. âItâs time to head back,â
You know what we need? Classic Inukag tropes but with a little twist.
I'll start: bodyguard AU, but Kagome is the bodyguard because Inuyasha's protection requires spiritual powers.
Maybe Iâm wrong, but I think @procrastinatorrexii has an exactly same WIP. Or pretty similar. đ€
Indeed I do!! A snip? A snip!!

It was a glorious morning. The sun was like an ember at the edge of the sky, slowly burning away the velvet night. As the blackness faded it gave way to a brilliant show of pinks and oranges and yellows. Just over the edge of the forest the light of dawn bloomed, staining the low lying clouds like ink on fresh white washi.
There was a low hum in the airâ almost exactly like the droning of bees, but just a little too loud. A little too regular.
Kagome didnât like it.
âMy lord, we should make haste.â She spoke without raising her voice, almost whispering in the morning hush, but of course he heard her.
*More under the cut-- some nudity, FYI. (It's mild)*
âWhat are you?â Kagome asked, amazed. Inuyasha stood and moved back to the small creek, kneeling to cup water in his hands again. âNothing youâve ever met before.â He said, and his voice was suddenly solemn. âNothing you will ever meet again, if I have anything to say about it.â He kept his head down, rubbing the water over his face as she considered his words.Â
âIâm not afraid of you.âÂ
His head whipped up and he scowled. She met his stare, unwavering, "I'm not." He shook his head, âkeh, if that's true, it's only because you donât know what I am.âÂ
âI know who you are.â Kagome said, and as she said it the truth of the words was more real to her than the sun rising over the trees. âEven only knowing you a short time, I know that youâre a good person. I know you wonât hurt me. I know you want to do the right thing. Thatâs enough for me.âÂ
He looked away sharply, exhaling. âYou should be careful, woman. You donât know whatâs out there.âÂ
âWhat, you mean like corpses that want to kill us?â Kagome shrugged; âbeen there, done that.âÂ
He watched her silently for a moment, then shocked her by laughingâ a loud, carefree laugh that sent a few birds flapping into the sky.
"Well, damn, I guess you have."
Itâs not a coming back, I just gave birth to my third baby, and Iâm breast feeding a lot (so I read a lot too) and looking for recommendations for Inukag stories where theyâre surfers or at least him.
If you know any pls let me now! đ„čđ„čđ„čđđ
Kagome realized with a start that the thrumming sound was not her heartâ for one thing, it was too slow to be her heart, which was hammering faster than the drums had, and for another, it was getting louder.Â
Hojo stepped out onto the opposite pier, which had been specially decorated with his familyâs insignia and paper lanterns, and turned to beam at her across the choppy water. Kagome felt herself frown. What was that strange noise?Â
The first person began to scream as he stepped forward to accept the cloak bearing the Chiefâs family insignia, offered by her beaming step-mother. Her fatherâs wife stopped to look towards the sound, and there was some murmuring in the crowd, irritation that someone was interrupting the show, then another voice rose, high and thready with terrorâ âDragon!â
The crowd moved like a tide, shouts of shock, disbelief, cries of fear came instantly, a waterfall of sound, and the tightly-packed bodies turned as one, moving towards the direction of the shoutâ and, Kagome realized, the direction of the strange thrumming sound. Not her heartbeat. Wings.
Time and the sea had not been kind to the altar her ancestors had built. It sagged like an old woman, the stumps of tallow that had once been candles were blackened and moldering. Dead wood, the fat of dead animals⊠dead things suffered badly in the elements.Â
The tree, on the other hand, had thrived. The roots were huge gnarled fingers that clawed at the ground, making the sun bleached wood of the altar uneven and tipping the stones of the quartz ring out of their places. A cliffside was a thin, salty place, especially on Rechnu. Kagome imagined the roots digging down into the earth, down through the thin skin of soil into the gray rock of the Spine, down into the ocean itself, desperate for enough water and nutrients to sustain the huge old tree.Â
Some called it the God Tree because of its incredible size; it dwarfed the long, salty grass and the flowering shrubs that clung to the cliffside, waving in the sea breeze. Others called it the Dragon Tree, because, of course, of the large carving of a dragon winding up the trunk. This one didnât breathe fire, but it was terrifying all the same, its large scaled head turned to stare out at the onlooker, huge carved jaws open to strike.Â
Years ago Kagomeâs forefathers, the chiefs of Rechnu who had seen their people through the dark and dangerous days of the cullings, had come to burn candles and recite spells of protection and warding over their villages, nestled in the valley below. The dragon had been an object of fear and awe, a magical creature that people respected and loathedâ until one man had sailed out and killed it.
Kagome took a step into the water without thinking. âLet me help you.â The words were out of her mouth before sheâd even realized she was going to say them, an order and a plea. âPlease. That looksâthat must be awful.â
âKeh.â He shrugged, but she didnât miss the wince, âIâve had worse.â
She started to disagree, then remembered heâd been pinned to a wall when sheâd found him, with an arrow almost in his heart. Who knew how long heâd been trapped in that little temple?
âIf you say so.â She reached out as if she could will him back to the bank, but he was too far awayâ watching her with a strange look in his narrowed eyes. Something halfway between curiosity and distrust. Somehow, that look was the final straw; âYou canât justâ look, it will make me feel better, if youâd let me help.â Tears were prickling at the corners of her eyes, but she tried not to let them fall. âPlease.â
With a sigh, he came back to the shore and planted himself on the bank, back to her. âDo what you want.â He said, but his tone was gentle. âIf you gotta.â
I think that more fanfiction should be written with the aim to tackle the original meaning of hanahaki. Because when the concept of hanahaki disease was originally created, it was intended to be a metaphor for suppressing oneâs feelings.
Your feelings are this beautiful garden of flora inside of your chest. When you express how you feel honestly, you allow for it to grow freely. But when you hide how you feel out of fear of rejection, and try to make it smaller and smaller, the flowers become cramped inside of you, until you choke on your own feelings. Every flower you cough up is something youâve felt, but refused to say.
The whole âdyingâ thing is intended to be more symbolic especially. Youâre killing off bits and pieces of yourself and how you feel, because youâre afraid to express yourself.
Itâs not really supposed to be, âThe one I love doesnât love me back, and Iâm dying from it.â Rather, itâs more along the lines of, âRepressing your emotions is bad for you, and itâs better and healthier to express them freely, even when itâs scary.â
Which is to say that, one, the cure for the disease should be telling the person that you are in love with how you feel. How the other person feels about the person afflicted should have nothing to do with it, as the trope is meant to be about feeling your emotions unapologetically.
And that, two, itâs not an inherently romantic trope. Obviously, it has romantic applications, but it can be written for any situation where a character is hiding how they truly feel. This can include a refusal to address a specific trauma, a desire to indulge in something that theyâre ashamed of, and even really practical things, like wanting to ask oneâs boss for a higher position.
Although (as an aromantic person myself) I donât agree with this conclusion about the trope, this application would also avoid people calling it arophobic. When the thing killing the character is a refusal to be honest with themselves, rather than an unrequited love, itâs on nobodyâs hands but their own to save their life.
There are a ton of ways that this interpretation of the hanahaki disease could be applied in new and interesting ways in fanfiction, and Iâd love to read what things people could come up with!

âI just want to seeââ She reached for his clenched hand, and he moved convulsively, pushing her away with the arm he still held and jerking the other hand out of her reach at the same time. âOw!â Kagome cried when his claws scraped her skin, scoring four thin red lines on her upper arm.Â
He blinked, looking up at her for the first time, and she realized that the whites of his eyes were fully red. It jolted the glimmer out of her mind, for the moment; âWhatâ hey, are you ok?âÂ
He blinked again, and seemed to have trouble forming the words, âIâ I donâtâ canât-â He showed his fangs, and they were longer than Kagome remembered. She tried to take a step back, but his grip on her made it impossible.Â
She flinched when his hand slid down her arm, but there was nothing to fear; his hand slid down to cup hers, almost tenderly, âI canât have this,â he gritted out the words like he was hurting.
âYou donât dance?â He asked, flashing the subtle hint of fangs when he smirked, âor you just donât like the song?â
The song, a somber and of course very dignified ballad hung on the air like drapes and had enticed no one at all to the dancefloor. He only laughed when she sniffed at him.
âYou must like to dance a great deal,â Kagome replied, irritated, âif you are willing to risk so much.â
âWhat am I risking?â He shrugged, making the long silver braid laying over his shoulder shine in the candlelight. Even through the mask he wore, scarlet red to match the rich fabric of his tunic, his golden eyes twinkled. âDo you not allow strangers at your banquets? Not very hospitable for a bunch of monks, if you ask me.â
âYou are not a stranger, sir.â Kagome said, crisply. She folded her hands in her lap, praying the mask stayed in place, and turned pointedly away. âYou are quite familiar.â
âWeâve never met,â The demon chided, the humor never dimming in his eyes. âIâd remember.â
âHow can it still be moving?â Kagomeâs voice sounded tiny in her own ears.Â
Inuyasha grunted, âIt canât die if it ainât alive.â The base rumble under his words made Kagome frown, focusing her attention back on his face. âAre you ok?â
âIâm gonna be, when that fucking thing is gone.â
âIf you canât kill it, how are you going to stop it?â She hissed the words. It was getting close again, but painfully slowly now, walking bent in an unnatural angle at the waist, with its hands on the ground like another pair of feet to help it stay upright. âIt wonât stop.â Kagome realized, feeling faint. âNo matter what you do it will just keep coming back.Â
âGotta rip it to pieces.â Inuyasha replied, cracking the knuckles on one hand.Â
âItâs being animated by a spellââ Kagome started, Inuyasha cut her off with a growlâ âYou fuckinâ think?â The corpse, as if hearing them, suddenly jerked upright and stood straight. Kagome screamed, and It turned to grin at them with its lose jaw.Â
The purple shine in the left eye was suddenly so bright it was visible even across the distance. âIt must be from the spell,â she muttered, cringing back behind Inuyasha.Â
âWhat must be from the spell?â Inuyasha shot back, crouching to attack.Â
âThe shimmer.â Kagome replied, surprised, âThat light. In her eye.â
