“You’re a nerd” I say as I look at you with heart eyes while you info dump to me
Okay, so this might or might not sound weird, but I want to write the kind of book people seek comfort in and are disturbed and uncomfortable reading at the same time. I want to show society criticism with no filter, so you feel uneasy.. like really REALLY uneasy reading my book because it somehow reflects part of the society we’re in that we all just try to suppress.
But sure, I want my readers to laugh and giggle and everything.. just not the whole time. I want them to not be able to put the book down and, at the same time, have to take a break because they need to process the disturbing, grotesque things that are happening.
Not in an “I’m just writing tragic things, blah blah” way- more in a ,too-honest’ way. A way people don’t talk about things because it’s somehow not really socially tolerated and not really well-mannered to speak up about that topics… or you just feel uneasy because it’s too depressing to talk about.
But sure.. I do want to include funny scenes, romance and relatable moments that make my readers smile.. sure
I feel something similar, I think.
Because in my book I will be raw and authentic, but as a reader I've always yearned for a safe space. Remember the Shire? Or Lothorien? Or Hogwarts? We don't get to spend a lot of time there. Unfortunately the burdens and main quests of the story take us everywhere but into the calm of a cozy interior where fire crackles softly, and your drink steams your glasses as you read something captivating, nibbling on your pie. And I yearn for something just like this. For my readers, just as well as for myself. Selfishly.
It is, however, a bit of an issue, as it can easily become cliché, and a bit... pastoral? So yeah, fast-paced action, emotional stakes, and that...but I will do my best to have a moment of respite, long enough to make the readers go "Okay, I want to re-read the book today, but just this part today, because I need my safe space without the rest of the drama."
Hi I love your little mouse. I dont like the group feature so im telling you here instead
Thank you!!
if you work in a creative field...or if you do creative hobbies like writing or drawing...you need to make friends with people who don't do those things. you need to befriend normie Steve who has never written a story in his life. and this is because when you are in a creative job or hobby and spend all your time doing that thing, surrounded by very capable people, who you inevitably compare your own progress and skills to, you forget what the baseline human skill at that thing is. and it's usually zero. normie Steve has not written a story since the 3rd grade when his teacher made him do it. he's very good at other things that are not storytelling - but if you tell normie Steve that you wrote a full 300-page book from start to finish, he will think you're some kind of savant. he does not know ANYONE else who has done this. you need this perspective. because when you're constantly on Let's Write Stories dot Com then everyone on Let's Write Stories dot Com will inevitably be like "oh of course everyone on earth has written a book or several at this point!" and you canNOT let yourself think that. that is not even close to the average human experience. you are in a bubble. do not put yourself down. do not give up.
If Your Scene Feels Lifeless, Someone Is Being Too Polite
Stories stall when everyone behaves. Real tension appears when someone:
• asks the wrong question • says something they shouldn’t • notices something uncomfortable • refuses to drop the topic • misunderstands something important • interrupts at the worst moment
Conflict doesn’t always look like shouting.
high-tension romantic scenarios to get lost in
fixing each other's collar/zipper/tie/etc - getting unexpectedly close, breath catching when they realize (or their light touches burning into the other's skin)
^ also moving someone's hair out of their face/behind their ear
^ or touching someone's necklace/bracelet/watch
eye contact in a crowded room, but not exchanging any words/expressions - just looking at each other, the rest of the world going still.
^a(n unironic) wink in this situation. or an eyebrow raise, lick or bite of lips, or head tilt. there's something in the subtlety of it - like "this is between us"
pulling someone in by their belt loops??? this is so random idk
feeling the other's breath/lips ghosting their neck
any sort of whisper. anywhere. goddamn.
a long pause when someone is speaking, as though they lost their train of thought while looking at the other person
their bodies accidentally pressed together - being stuck in a small space, falling onto one another, or having to sit really close together. the pause when it's realized.
^this but they're hiding
"make me"
"i dare you"
"and if i do?"/"what will i get (if i do)?" "show/tell me what you want"
the pinky reach before holding hands for the first time
slow dancing (the hand placement, eye contact, proximity, MUSIC)
teaching the other something that involves physical contact (like holding their hands while trying to balance on a skateboard, or guiding their hands somewhere)
eye contact, waiting for one to fold
"don't do that to me" (tempting the other)
sharing earbuds - forced proximity, the vulnerability in sharing things that matter to them
i'm back!! i'm in a huge slump rn, so submit to my "ask" box if there is anything you want to see :) alsoo if you have anything to add to this list, reply to the post!! i love hearing what you guys have to say

“I’d never generate the actual text, but of course I use genAI. I don’t have time to research/brainstorm/plot/outline/learn how to write/edit/reword without it!”
Okay, well then you just don’t get to write a book I guess. If I “don’t have time” to train for a marathon, I don’t get to plow my car through the people who did as I drive to celebrate alongside all the actual runners at the finish line. I can either try my best to make it on my own as a very slow runner/walker/frequent break-taker, or I just don’t get to participate. “I don’t have time”—okay then. You don’t have time. Writing is not a fast and easy process. Come to terms with that and either adjust your timeframe expectations and make the time, or accept that you can’t, because that “I don’t have time” excuses nothing.

cop: can you describe the woman who stabbed you
male author: lithe, spirited, outgoing, and not afraid to speak her mind. she was a raw sexual force and she knew it. she was dandelion fluff on a summer day, gone in an instant, leaving you with nothing but the memory of her touch and the faint taste of strawberries on your lips
cop: great we have a motive, but we still need a description
