saw an ad outside a local restaurant that said "have a star-crossed dinner this valentine's day"
do...do people not know being star-crossed is bad?
"come here and have a dinner that's cursed by fate"
everone in the replies going "no it isnt" and "ive never heard it used that way before" take a look around at what and who you are surrounding yourself with. ignorance is contagious, never just assume you know the actual literal meaning of anything, look it up
Step 1: "star-crossed" is a term meaning "cursed by fate" (see also, "disasterous", with a near-identical etymology)
Step 2: some playwright from an obscure island kingdom uses the phrase "star-crossed lovers" to refer to a pair of doomed lovers
Step 3: the phrase "star-crossed lovers" becomes widely quoted and referenced, still specifically in the context of doomed love
Step 4: people somehow miss the doomed part and come to the conclusion that "star-crossed" must refer to something romantic
