Cruelty-Free Knit Anatomical Dissection Kits by Emily Stoneking
Vermont-based artist Emily Stoneking runs a quirky, knitting-scientific based boutique called aKNITomy. Stoneking transforms strings of yarn into live-dissections pinned to a tray or wooden frames. They document the anatomical details of rats, frogs, people, and other creatures. Their tiny bodies have been open up for exhibition; each organ is playfully crafted with different colors and different techniques have been applied to emulate their perceived texture and shape.
Although the whimsical creations are not completely, accurate, they originate from a place of imagination. Stoneking reveals: “I have no background in science, just a layman’s love of it.” Her first piece pays homage to her first real live dissection in her biology class: the knitted frog. Each kit holds a PDF knitting guide to make your own experiment at home.
Since 2011, the artist has worked on her craft. Her designs are a means to support her as a part-time student and develop her passion. You can find her entire collection in her Etsy shop.

For today’s Feminist Fiber Artist of the Day we are focusing on the work of Sarah K. Benning. We displayed 9 of her succulent embroideries at our first exhibit stop at Aeronaut Brewing Co this past August (shown on display in the first photo of this post). The trope of the “crazy” girlfriend is so prevalent and joked about now that girls getting into relationships are so worried about seeming imposing that they do not speak out about things that make them uncomfortable and are forced to let their boyfriends emotionally manipulate them into normalizing otherwise inappropriate behavior. They do not speak up and then are faced with dealing with an uncomfortable situation for so long, which can really affect their self esteem and emotional health. “Jokes” aren’t always jokes, especially at the expense of women. They are usually integrated into people’s thinking to the extent that they truly affect people’s opinions of women and the way they see them.
