During their transformation sequences in Magia Record, the Holy Quintet briefly appear as adults. I really love this detail. To me, it's a reminder that they all sacrificed their adulthoods for the sake of one wish.

Like most PMMM official art, the more I look at this the more it bothers me. It looks like its supposed to be about the girls hanging out with their favourite animals, but in Kyoko’s spot the grapes are front and centre. It looks like shes carrying around the grapes as some weird alternative to a pet rock and the chipmunks (or whatever they are) are just following her around trying to steal them. Why would she be carrying around pet grapes? Does she cry when they go rotten? When and why did her love of grapes start? Does she name each bunch? We may never know.

I also found a new way to read Madoka after my latest rewatch. The friend I was showing it to pointed out that even the simplest of actions are super exaggerated and I thought “huh, they usually do that in stage plays when so the audience in the back can see better” ex:

Then I realized: this is on purpose. The way the whole story is told is privy to a stage play.

The very first things that happen are the curtains opening and Madoka entering centre stage.

The sets, too. Ik the chairs are symbolic but it also is very much spread out like it’s on a stage

Especially the shadow play with Kyubey, it’s a common thing utilized in stage plays.

Most of all, Walpurgisnacht is LITERALLY THE STAGE-CONSTRUCTING WITCH.

Walpy puts the play in action by killing Madoka and Mami in the first timeline. From then on, Homura is forced to act out the same play over and over again helplessly for times lines and time lines. Her lines become scripted, she’s become an actor and in the theatre witches play.

Ooh, that’s a good observation.  (Also note that the structure of the story is straight out of a stage play, too, just a very old kind - main series PMMM is literally a trilogy in the original ancient Greek sense of the word with Madoka as the character linking all of them.)

Also intersects really interestingly with that one Japanese fan theory I’m all in on that never caught on over here, namely that Homulilly (or actually I think Akuhomu, especially after the MagiReco anime) is the core Witch around which Walpurgisnacht accreted… after all, Homura’s actions are becoming more scripted and moreover she comes to see everyone else’s actions as more and more scripted too, no?

I feel like that viewpoint really fits in with this scene from Madokami’s transformation in MagiReco:

Here, the different versions of Madoka from different timelines come together, almost looking like they are about to bow after a performance. Not only they (when united) are the only beings other than Homura to be aware of this theatre, after Madokami is fully formed, the play will finally be over - until Rebellion, at least.

Even the after credits scene of the original series can be likened to the actors lining up to bow after a play:

This is partly due to her years of trauma with Walpurgisnacht, but perhaps also due to the fact that she had been reenacting this play all over again, but she was the stage director overseeing it this time - a behavior that continues with Akuhomu.
