Spider-Man ffh spoiler alert
Mysterio messing with Peter’s brain physically hurt me watching it.
Mysterio dredged up all of the bad memories in Peter’s head and made him relive his own nightmares —Tony’s hand reaching up from his grave, Mysterio guilting Peter into thinking tonys death was his fault, being trapped in the rubble of a building, being tricked on all sides by people he trusts. Peter wanted to trust Beck, but now beck is literally ripping his mind to shreds.
And then Peter thinks Fury’s won, shot Mysterio through the heart, but it’s another illusion, one that tricked him into telling Mysterio about his friends.
Peter’s so trusting —he’s naive. Because he’s sixteen years old. A child. He wants everything to be good so willfully that he’ll trust anyone who says they want the same thing.
And Mysterio ripped that from him in the most brutal way possible: destroyed his mind and his body by hitting him with a train.
and then Peter isn’t sure if he can trust Happy who is coming to rescue him —he’s in pain and in shock, and he knows Mysterio is going after his friends. And he sees his friend Happy and he’s so excited and then ... what if it’s an illusion?
“Are you real?”
That line broke me.
Tom’s acting was so on point in this scene. Peter Parker is broken and so terrified. He doesn’t know what’s real or not. And Happy sees tony stark in him, the broken tony stark who had trouble trusting people after Obadiah stane stoke his arc reactor.
Even after Peter uses his spider sense aka the Peter tingle to discern what’s real or not, when he picks up Edith again and asks in that tiny, broken voice of his, “is this real?” it really drove the point home.
Peter’s gonna be affected by this for the rest of the mcu. He’s gonna have trust issues after being betrayed and not knowing who or what was real.
And then when Mysterio’s tech people leaked a fake video making Spider-Man the bad guy and releasing his real identity, turning public opinion against him, Peter’s gonna have a hard time doing anything.
TL;DR —Mysterio broke Peter Parker, and mcu phase four Peter Parker’s gonna be a changed dude.
