The three ran to their first class, which was Practical Magic with Professor Hemlock. He looked scrawny and unshaven. His hair was slicked back and pulled into a tight low ponytail. He wore a dark green suit that looked like it had seen better days. An equally scrawny brown cat followed him in and jumped onto the desk.
âWelcome everyone to Practical Magic,â he said, walking into the class and slamming his books on the desk before roughly writing his name and the class on the board. âI am William Hemlock, your professor and the one who will be guiding you through the process of learning how to apply your magic to everyday life. Now, if you look at the syllabusâŠâ
Alexis listened intently, since she was going to be learning magic from now on. She felt the magic wand in her pocket, and hoped she wouldnât mess up anything. After the class concluded, they made their way to their next class, which was Etiquette with Duchess Darlene Devlin.
âWhy is a duchess teaching at an all girlâs school?â Alexis wondered aloud.
âI heard itâs because she and her husband, the duke, have been in an argument for a very long time and are living separately,â Nova said in a low voice. âShe gets an allowance, but it isnât enough to cover her extravagant lifestyle, so she took up a job here.â
Alexis and Sereia nodded along as they entered the classroom. It wasnât in a traditional classroom like their other classes were, as this one was in a large hall, with large windows allowing for ample light to come in. On one side, there were tables with white clothes set up, and the other half was empty.
âSo, what do we do?â Sereia asked. Everyone else was standing around, wondering the same thing. It was some time before the doors to the room flew open and a woman wearing a green dress walked in, her heels audibly clicking against the floor. Alexis recognized her from the opening ceremony. She walked up to the front of the room and turned towards the gathered crowd, her eyes in a harsh glare.
âWelcome everyone, to your first Etiquette lesson. I am Duchess Darlene Devlin, and I am in charge of this classroom. You are to refer to me as Madame Duchess Devlin. You will learn the basics and as you progress, we shall determine if you can attend the end of year dance.â
âThereâs a dance at the end of the year?â someone asked. The duchessâs head snapped towards the source and addressed them.
âYou! Minus 5 points! You do not interrupt me in my classroom!â she snapped. Everyone jumped to attention and immediately closed their mouths.
âThis is going to be a fun class,â Alexis thought as she drilled them on their objectives for the year. Before long, they were excused to the next class, which was Potions 101 with Professor Whitedale.
They all sat around individual tables with small cauldrons in the middle of them. Lab coats, goggles, and protective gear were hung up in closets with clear doors. At the head of the room, there was a table for the instructor. Everyone took their seats and waited for the teacher to arrive.
When she did, Alexis was taken with her. She had green hair that was pulled up and wore a purple dress under her lab coat. She turned towards the class and addressed them.
âListen well, all of you! Potion making is no joke! You will be dealing with potentially dangerous items, as well as fire and other elements. You are to handle them with the utmost care and precision! Now, look at your syllabusesâŠâ
Alexis flipped the syllabus open and followed along with the teacher. They went over the potions they had to learn and how some of what they were to be learning would be used in future Alchemy classes.
âAlchemy sounds interesting,â Alexis said as they exited the classroom.
âYou think so?â Sereia asked, as they made their way into the changing rooms. They made their way to the next class, which was P.E. and Flying with Hugo Faranak. He was a handsome young man with light green hair and purple eyes. He gave everyone a kind smile and called for their attention.
âWelcome everyone to your first P.E. and Flying lesson. I am your instructor, Hugo Faranak. We will spend the first part of class conditioning your bodies and then the second half will be focusing on flight. Everyone understands?â
Everyone voiced their understanding. The teacher nodded and led them out to the middle of the field.
âNow, letâs begin with some light exercises!â he said as he started the lesson. Alexis was worried at first, because was not very athletic back home, no matter how many times her grandmother tried to get her to come on walks with her or go hiking with her family. She felt bad about it now, looking back on it.
After their exercises, he led them over to some racks where they were some brooms. Alexis could hardly believe that she was holding a real flying broom! She was excited to try and fly. Nova looked confident while Sereia seemed nervous.
âSereia, are you okay?â Alexis asked her. The mermaid sighed and shook her head.
âUnfortunately no. Iâve lived in the ocean my whole life! Flying in the sky? Iâm scared I might accidentally fall off by mistake.â
âOh itâs no big deal,â Nova said. âFlying is easy for me.â
âThatâs because youâre a fairy!â Sereia argued back at her. Fortunately, Professor Faranak came over and calmed everyone down before instructing everyone on how to use their brooms. It took Alexis and Sereia some time, but Nova seemed to get the hang of it easily, as she flew straight up into the sky.
After P.E. and Flying was lunch, and it was delicious! There was all sorts of foods that Alexis was familiar with, but others that she had never tried before. She remembered her grandfather's words about exploring the world, and decided to try something new.
When they all got their food, they sat down at the table and chatted about the day so far and their next classes. That was when Claire approached their table and sat down with them.
âHello everyone. How is your day so far?â she asked them.
âItâs great! All of our classes so far have been incredible!â Nova said. âI think Flying with Professor Faranak is going to be my favorite!â
âWell, wait until the swimming module,â Sereia said. âIâm going to be the fastest one there.â
âIt sounds like you're all adjusting well,â Claire said, and turned towards Alexis. âAnd how are you finding everything?â
Alexis looked down at her plate and thought for a moment.
âI, I think itâs going well. I canât pinpoint a favorite class yet, but Iâm sure I will find it soon.â
âThatâs good. I look forward to seeing you all at the dorm later today,â Claire said, before picking up her tray and walking away. The girls watched her for a moment before finishing their food and heading to their next classes.
