I really despise how gung-ho European gays, in particular, are about their sex lives. In a small provincial state like Malta, they practice a fair degree of restraint, but the kind of shit I've seen them get up to in major European cities, in public, in full view of thousands of people, rubs me the wrong way. Not in a moralistic or "decadence" sense, but because these people end up forming the template by which otherwise tolerant folks, especially in the Global South, judge us.

When I came out to my parents, the first thing on their minds wasn't "oh, our son likes other boys," but dog collars, piss pigs, and smoking meth in public. For a lot of people, this is the template through which they understand homosexuality, because European and Western gays, in general, insist on projecting this image.

I know the argument people usually make in response: "But the leather and dog-mask gays are the ones who won *our* civil rights!" Yes, with emphasis on *your* civil rights. But they also keep inhibiting our ability to have a dialogue about defining *our* civil rights.

Hawaii and Tibet could not be more opposite. In the former, we have a sovereign nation invaded by foreign powers and seized, with dramatic decreases in literacy and increases in poverty for the indigenous population afterwards. In the latter, we have an integrated vassal of a former feudal empire, whose local nobility when threatened by revolution and democratization tried and failed to secede because their own serfs rose up against them, resulting in massive increases in their quality of life.

The entire "free Tibet" movement is a Western campaign to try and impose feudal rulers on a population that does not want them for the purpose of undermining the Communist Party of China. If the Dalai Lama had his way, the people of Tibet would become less free than they are now.

In fact if the ambitions of the ETIM or any of the other al-Qaeda-aligned separatist groups were realised and Chinese Uyghurs were forcibly assimilated into some Salafist ‘East Turkestan’ project, it would actually then be tantamount to cultural genocide because they have their own distinct cultural, folk and religious practices that would 100% be suppressed and erased, and probably violently.
