Okay despite how the reviews of the Supergirl movie are doing, what do you think of Kara Zor-El in this depiction?
short version: milly alcock is probably my favourite on-screen supergirl but oh my god she deserved a better movie, i spent that entire thing thinking "I could be reading the far better comic book version of this right now" and i am a sad potato because i had high hopes for this movie despite the reviews
incredibly long version (spoilers below):
ok starting with the positives! i like that she only got her suit in the finale and i loved all the clark scenes! and i like that they don't sanitise her, she's just as messy as the original
negatives (ie the rest of the movie) WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? this was probably one of the easiest superhero movie adaptation jobs in cinema history because it's not like they were trying to make an original story loosely based off a few arcs or a character's mythology, it is clearly supposed to be just an adaptation of supergirl woman of tomorrow. so all they had to do was adapt supergirl woman of tomorrow -- which is frankly more of a graphic novel than a traditional comic run, therefore making it simpler to adapt -- and just tie it in to superman 2025 more. that's it. all they had to do was make a graphic novel a bit more concise/less episodic and pepper in some david corenswet. job done
however this was not the job that was done bc they instead decided to make a load of changes that added nothing good to it/just detracted from it. like you know one thing no human being in the history of the planet has ever thought while reading supergirl woman of tomorrow? "I wish lobo was here" AND YET FOR SOME REASON. LOBO IS HERE! that was honestly one of the worst changes and i think that's pretty representative of most the changes made. it was like the movie didn't trust itself emotionally and was dangling shiny keys in front of my face every so often to try to keep me interested, except all it did was make me bored because it was reducing emotional investment? (also on lobo why did we have to have him save her ass?????? i dont want a random man showing up to save the female main character just to justify his nothingburger cameo existence)
the script overall was messy and felt more go-place-do-thing than solid coherent plot, and the dialogue was often very clunky and over-expository (the all actors did their absolute best with what they had tho)
as for ruthye, the change to her backstory was inoffensive (tho i think the comic backstory serves the themes a bit better, in that she still has a place to go home to so kara has extra incentive to protect this girl's innocence. wouldve been good to establish the aunt earlier in this) but changing her to be a side character instead of the main character does the story a lot of damage. the opening being kara instead of ruthye was another "jangling keys in front of my face" moment that again did nothing for the story bc all it establishes is stuff we pick up later anyway.
also the timeline, wasn't a fan. i get how in the book it's a bit nebulous how long krypto will survive which you could argue lowers the stakes, but i dunno i think it's pretty necessary for a journey across a huge expanse of space to take well over a month bc it sells the idea that This Is Space, It Is Big. this movie doesn't seem to consider the main character's original stakes to be good enough and ups them (like krem being part of some trafficking ring n kara needing to protect the girls (who felt very tacked on, bc they were)?? just a very odd change? it's meant to be a personal story with a side of helping others largely unrelated to the main quest). it doesn't seem to like its own source material half the time
stylistically i didn't like it either. the directing was mid, the needle drops were trying to emulate james gunn's needle drops with absolutely none of the skill and were wayy to overdone to be good. BUT WORST OF ALL IT TOOK ONE OF THE MOST GORGEOUS COMICS IVE READ IN THE PAST FEW YEARS AND MADE IT A GREY-BROWN SLUDGE MOVIE. and it was so uncreative with aliens and different planets, they just looked like rejected bland star wars spinoff sets or random semi-futuristic apocalypse sets (WHEN AGAIN. WORKING FROM A GORGEOUS COMIC) instead of unique planets. ruthye was a particular victim of this, she doesn't look even slightly alien/different (why does krem look 100x more alien and ruthye look 100x more human? thats just a normal jacket!) and back on writing, it never pushed the cultural differences between ruthye and kara and the rest of the worlds. like in the book the other worlds use different time notations, whereas in this ruthye's world and krypton use the same notation of a day apparently?? people don't react enough to differences, especially ruthye who's meant to have never left the planet
anyway all that to say as much as i'm happy they used this version of kara and didn't make her Girl Superman, this was a very poorly done adaptation that i went in assuming couldn't possibly be messed up. and i assumed the reviews were largely misogyny n ppl who didn't like a messy fmc but nope. actually mid. i just really wanted this to be good and i'm gonna go reread woman of tomorrow now to recover

1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.
2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.
3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."
4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
I think fandom would heal if a lot of these people made peace with the REAL media they yearn for but are too ashamded to admit to themselves. And if they'd just watch that instead of anything with a plot or premise.

I am saying;
Fandom would be better if people who only care about shipping and don't give a shit about stories or plot or characters or complex relationship dynamics (including romance), or the canon, or even what the piece of media is about, would stop getting into fandom spaces for things that had interesting stories and just watched Soap Operas instead.
Because if they ONLY care about shipping.... there's an entire genre specifically JUST for that.
