Recent discourse reminds me of that cult indoctrination trick that's often used to weed out more difficult marks early on, where they tell you all that you aren't allowed to eat rice on Tuesdays and then if you protest they go "wow SOMEBODY likes rice a little much huh" as if you're the fucking weirdo who cares too much about how much rice is consumed between Monday and Wednesday instead of them.
And this forces you to decide whether your autonomy matters to you more than the approval of the group - while they'll still act like you're on thin ice either way, if you give in at this point they know you're theirs forever, because now they've established a foothold, you've shown a moral weakness, which they will brand you with so it can be used against you in the future ("hey RICE-addict here doesn't want help break into the city records office") to force you to double-down and isolate you further.
And if instead you do decide to push back further, after your abrupt departure from the group ("You're seriously leaving us over RICE?!? Seriously?") and subsequent ostracism, you can then be used as a demonstration to the others who were more pliable, of how the outgroup is full of people like you who are obsessed with violating the No-Tuesday-Rice rule to the point where they'll abandon all their friends, who cared so much for them, so it clearly isn't an arbitrary restriction, you're the kind of monster these rules are intended to protect them from, thus all the other wise and esoteric precepts of the charismatic leader are implied to be equally justified.
This isn't just for cults either! Shitty partners, bosses, friends - they all do variants of this where if you kick back the first time they make an unreasonable request, it proves you weren't ever committed since you'd let such a small thing ruin everything. And of course, if it's the third or the tenth unreasonable thing they ask of you, it's SUCH A SMALL THING to be a deal-breaker at this late point in your relationship!

I went to a christian funeral last week for an elderly person I used to go to church with and have been processing it for days. I didn’t know the person who passed very well (I mostly went to support their spouse), so I was able to see a christian funeral from outside the lens of personal grief for once and it was also the first one I’ve been to since deconstructing.
I have..so many thoughts.
There was just. So little emotion. So little sadness or grief was expressed. The pastor who led the service spent all of maybe thirty seconds talking about the man who had died, and the rest of the time warning everyone in attendance that they ought to get right with god before their own time came to an end. Repeatedly emphasizing how imperfect and sinful this poor man had apparently known he was deep down, and how wonderful that Jesus had bothered to save him in spite of that.
It felt disrespectful, to be quite honest. It felt so callous and cruel to all of this man’s grieving family and friends, to spend this time meant to be in his honor — a celebration of his life — talking about all his supposed flaws and sins and the inevitability of hell for the unsaved. And god, I know for certain that some of those people there were not christians. I’m not! And I wasn’t even one of the ones grieving. I can’t even imagine the pain of having to sit there through a service like that and be talked down to and chastised and scolded and threatened with never getting to see their loved one again if they don’t “ask god for forgiveness” immediately. All while mourning said loved one.
Just. The whole service! Every song, every anecdote, every prayer and poem, all about their god and their heaven and hell. That poor man was barely an afterthought in his own funeral, and what’s worse is that’s probably exactly how he would have wanted it! I just sat there and kept thinking, How does this help anyone? Who is this comforting?
It’s been a while since I went to a christian funeral as a practicing christian, but I don’t remember the sermons and songs being particularly comforting then either. It’s like every emotion is frozen, unable to be expressed, because you’ve been promised that you’re going to get to see them again. They’re not gone, they’re just with Jesus now, and actually that’s a good thing. That’s the real future you’re supposed to be looking forward to, if you’re a good believer, so there’s no reason to be sad or upset or angry. There’s no point in lingering over the grief. Better to use this great opportunity to save as many other souls as we can while we have a captive audience! ..It sounds ridiculous to me now.
I used to wonder why I never grieved the way people in books or movies seemed to. I thought it must be proof that I was secretly uncaring or broken, when I sat at my grandmother’s funeral and couldn’t shed a single tear despite how much I had loved her. But how many times was I lied to about death? To me, death wasn’t real. It wasn’t something I was allowed to get upset about, at least not for long. It wasn’t supposed to be permanent. And now I wonder how many deaths I have never grieved, how many losses I never processed because it wasn’t safe to do so. And I wonder when I will finally be able to cry without tricking myself into it with sad movies or angsty stories just to release a bit of all that pent-up grief.
The dissonances of all that masked loss and false promises were staggering last week at that funeral. I had felt it before, but never so acutely and with all the context I have now. Christians like to claim that they’ve overcome death, but to me it seems pretty clear that they’re just great at repression.
I just hope that I’m getting better at allowing myself to feel again. It’s a work in progress.
"This is my weird son. He can't climb for shit, but he is handsome and strong."
#cats be like#is anybody adopt that#and don't wait for an answer
Everything that isn't food is a cat from the perspective of a cat. Cats can look upon the true form of eldritch monstrosities and keep their sanity. They'd just see another cat. A fucking weird-looking cat, but a cat nonetheless.
"Those tentacles will take a lot of licking to keep clean, but it's nothing I haven't dealt with before. Hold still, kitten."
I don’t have time to draw it right now but while driving home from the winco I saw a happy mustached man pedaling a bike, towing a cart built to look like a chariot, inside of which stood what I can only imagine was his completely expressionless 13 year old in a makeshift corinthian helmet

maybe mediocrity isn’t wrong. maybe you don’t need to be the best at everything you do. maybe you don’t need to be the best at anything you do. it’s ok to simply do things because you enjoy doing them. its ok to not want to advance in your job. nothing has to be a competition. you don’t need to be better than anyone. you can do things just because they’re fun. you don’t need to read up on the history, and know everything about it. its ok to just exist. its ok.
Thoughts that are mutual between cats and their people:
Yeah you're cute when you sleep but you didn't let me sleep either so I'm going to annoy you now because I'm bored. Hahah get poked, sleepy idiot.
How do you not comprehend this when I am literally staring at you. Like I understand that your brain can't understand things this nuanced but come on, how do you not get this.
I don't know if you know that what I am currently doing is an expression of affection, but that won't stop me. Knowing that I showed you that I love you is enough.
I heard a crinkly material and the sound of you chewing so I have to know what's in your mouth RIGHT FUCKING NOW.
I can't communicate with you and you can't communicate with me, so I'm just copying the tone of the sound you're making in hopes that you understand that I try.
You are doing activities beyond my comprehension, and I find this fascinating. I will never understand what the fuck you are trying to achieve here, but I am intrigued nonetheless.
Hey are you ok, you haven't done your weird thing in a while. Yeah I don't get why you do that but I know you do that when you're ok.
Why did you give the last of your food to that poorly disguised mimic? You were finally at peace with letting go, but now this odd thing won’t leave you alone and is even turning itself into various items in an attempt to aid you.
The mimic is a young one, and you knew that from the moment you laid eyes on it. It was disguised as a crate, but the angles weren’t quite right. The corners were a little lopsided, and if you looked hard enough you could make out the creature’s mouth.
A sigh escapes you as you toss over the last of your rations, not even bothering to stand up as you do so. What’s the point? You think. I’ve been trapped in this cave for days, nobody is looking for me, and the monsters are closing in. Why should I bother even trying? I could just fall asleep now, and let this little mimic eat me too.
The thing is… it doesn’t. It eats your rations, but when you lay down and try to sleep, it doesn’t attack. You do hear it move closer, but you don’t open your eyes until you feel something nudge your hand. As you barely open your eyes, you can see that the mimic has morphed itself into a crude sword. You can’t help but chuckle.
“You’re cute, but I don’t have anything left to give you.” You don’t have anything left to give for yourself either, but you don’t say so.
The mimic doesn’t seem to take no for an answer. It becomes a dagger, then an axe, then a staff, as though it’s trying to determine what your preffered weapon is.
“Listen, I don’t know what you’re trying to do, but it’s not working. I’m not going to pick you up and take you into some other part of this stupid cave system. Nice try, though.”
You turn away from it and attempt to sleep again. As you do so, you find yourself shivering. You really wish, as you doze off, that you had a blanket.
When you wake, much later, you’re surprised to find yourself covered with the warmest blanket you’ve ever had. You quickly sit up, eagerly hoping that someone had cone for you, but the cave is empty. When you look at the blanket, you notice the imperfect edges and the janky seam across the middle.
“…why haven’t you eaten me yet?” You ask the little mimic that’s now laying on top of you. “What’s wrong with you?”
The mimic, still in the form of the blanket, slithers off of you, but it does not respond. Instead, it begins taking the form of weapons again. When it turns into a crooked staff, you reach out, despite yourself. Your fingers wrap around it and you use it to haul your aching, injured body to your feet. “I guess there are probably nicer places to die.”
You know you won’t get far. And you don’t. Especially not without light. The mimic doesn’t seem too bothered, though. When you collapse again, it scuttles off. Perhaps this was simply where it wanted you to take it. Perhaps now you can finally succumb to your exhaustion.
Then, a few minutes later, a misshapen clay cup bumps against your hand. It’s full of water, and there’s a crack in the middle like a jagged mouth. You pick up the cup and you drink, telling yourself it’s only out of desperation. When you set the cup down, that little cracked mouth seems to smile.
This goes on for what feels like days. The mimic helps you limp along through the tunnels, transforming into whatever you may need at any given time. Every time you fall asleep, you expect not to wake up. Yet, you do, usually with a mimic blanket wrapped around you. It brings you food and water when you can.
The biggest surprise comes when one morning, you find you’re pleased to have survived another night. You’re happy to have the mimic keeping you warm. It’s a new feeling, and a confusing one, but it’s not unpleasant.
The other monsters that you know are down here seem to leave you alone for the most part. You aren’t sure why. It crosses your mind that maybe it has something to do with the mimic. Then again, maybe they’re just waiting for you to die. Death is gradually beginning to sound less and less appealing.
The day you catch a glimpse of sunlight down a long and narrow tunnel is the first day you finally feel like your old self again. Your pace quickens, and you don’t need to lean on the mimic’s staff form quite so much. The illusion shatters when you reach the light’s source. A small gap, high above. You curl up on the floor and cry. When you finally have the strength to look up again, your mimic has become a ladder.
Getting up is hard, in your state. Climbing, even more so. But the ladder is the biggest and best transformation the mimic has done so far, and if it wants you to get out, then you can’t let it down.
You feel it push up under you when you reach the gap. It helps you squeeze through, and then… freedom. Fresh air, and sunlight. You lay on your back on the stone, and you pass out.
You wake up at sunset, with a blanket draoed over you. A blanket with a jagged seam down the middle.

Dude this is an awesome addition. That the mimic thinks so much in terms of ‘perfect/imperfect.’ It makes total sense for something whose schtick is mimicking things as accurately as possible. But the first time it said ‘perfect enough’ was a gut punch at my own perfectionism. So ow
It feels taboo as a childfree person to admit this but I actually do have concerns about who is going to take care of me when I'm old. The elder care system in our nation relies A LOT on the unpaid care labor of adult children. I just don't think that's a good reason to have kids.
"But you'll have more money!" does not completely put this to rest for me. Neither does "Buy care insurance!" Even if I can afford direct personal care, who is going to advocate for me to get it? Who is going to navigate bureaucracy for me when I'm 80?
"If you do have kids, there's no GUARANTEE that they'll take care of you when your old!" That's true, but doesn't solve my problem.
I think childfree people get very defensive about this question because its used as a kind of "gotcha!" against us, but I actually do not feel we can afford to be in denial about this reality. Based on current trends of more people in their 30s stating they intend to be permanently childfree, we are going to see a huge wave of childfree adults hitting the eldercare system at once in a few decades. Childfree people in their 30s should be advocating around eldercare NOW.
We desperately need to cultivate a society in which everyone, even the most bitter, unlikeable, miserably lonely person in the world, has a social safety net that they can rely on from the day they're born to the day they die, and that includes their elder care.
We are not going to achieve this meaningfully under capitalism. :')
Okay I know this is an old hack but I finally have some metal top hangers and tried using the tabs from drink cans to layer them and turns out it works as well as everyone said it would!
I ordered a set of matching hangers to replace my current plastic shirt hangers (which the tabs don't fit on) and will update when those arrive and I can continue this organization with the shirts! Til then this is the bottoms setup. Pants on one, skirts on the other.
for the shirts I will probably group similar ones together. For example since my job dress code is all black, I have 5 black sleeveless tops and 3 black short sleeve tops, will probably pair the sleeveless together and the short sleeves together, so that my work clothes don't take up so much of my hanging bar, since they're basically identical blouses and don't rlly have to all be visible at once.
Also the new matching hangers will limit my closet to those only, a set of 40 (plus the pants clip hangers i already own shown in these pics) so I think this will help me stay reasonable with my amount of clothing.
Listen, if you interrupt me with a new task while I’m midway through another, you aren’t allowed to be mad when I switch to the new task immediately. You clearly thought the new task was important enough to interrupt me with it!
I am just a little pikmin! You’re the one with the whistle!!
‘You need to learn to prioritise’ no YOU do! You’re the one dishing out tasks!! All I need to do is take things back to the onion!
Trying to take better care of my clothes. Which for me this week included half an hour of shaving a couple shirts that have been VERY worn and loved. They had those picks of lint all over them, and now they don't.
And painstakingly picking apart the side seams of a skirt to add and sew in pockets. And dreading doing that exact thing again with every. single. skirt. And several pants that didn't already have pockets included.
Because no matter how much I love an item, i just don't reach for it very much if it doesn't have pockets cause it means I'll be dragging my purse around with me all day.
And no matter how much I love my old t-shirts they look more casual than I intend when they're covered in bits of lint.
Like??? I just feel like my clothes are being treated better now that I'm being more aware of which items I love???
Realized that pretty much none of my closet sparked joy. Like...a few items and that was it.
Surprisingly they were rlly basic items (a black dress, a black skirt, some bright elastic but cute rust pants) and I realized that they were a totally different style than the rest of my closet 😅 my other clothes were casual, multicoloured and patterned. These are sleek, slightly dressier, and solid colours. So I did some browsing and ordered more solid colour sleek items. Enough to make a small capsule style wardrobe.
I know that it's not usually ideal to buy a bunch of shit after decluttering but I DID and i feel so much better now??????? My clothes spark joy. I get excited to get dressed in the morning. I don't pick something and go ugh what matches this and reluctantly wear the thing I don't like because it's all that matches the item I do like. Like wtffff.
I even splurged and got nice hangers for my new clothes. Since there's less than 40 items, it wasn't as expensive to replace my hangers so I got a 50 pack of gorgeous basic black velvet hangers from Amazon and like???? I feel so luxurious?????????
I kept my other hangers (the plastic kind) so that I can use them to hang dry laundry. And now i do that more. Which is better for my clothes (and wallet 😅) than the machine dryer, AND I don't need to shill out money for a humidifier cause my apartment gets so dry in winter. AND I can more easily hand wash items which is even better for taking good care of them and making them last.
I just like? Love all my clothes now and want to take care of them better than I ever did of my other clothes.
Marie Kondo: if having 50 pens brings you joy, then have 50 pens! Perhaps you could decorate a box to display them? Some things bring u joy not thru themselves directly but thru the ease of mine they give u - a baby monitor may not initially spark joy, but doesn't it bring u joy to be able to check on ur baby and know they are safe?
Articles: Marie Kondo is the cause of landfills! She wants u to have no books and nothing! What if u have a hobby and she makes u throw away everything related to that hobby 😭 "why Marie kondo is wrong" but plungers don't spark joy therefore it's not practical
Just say u didn't read/watch her stuff and stfu 🙄
Like srsly, her method is WAY less strict than most minimalist and decluttering methods out there yet those are celebrated while hers is treated as extreme.
interesting that 1 million white dudes write 1 billion articles every year about this and that finding from happiness studies about how to make your life happier including many tips that are 100% not accessible to every single person on the planet and people either vibe or just ignore them but when 1 japanese lady tells people to throw out some books we need to have twenty zillion articles about how she is a classist demon who hates literacy and the complexity of human emotion. weird, that
