Zelie was born in Vaniville town. At the age of 7, her mother passed away from an illness. Following that tragedy, she and her father moved in with her paternal grandparents in Artazon, a town in the Paldea region. At the age of 21, she chose to journey back to the Kalos region.

She travelled to Lumiose City with the goal of finding employment and housing. If she failed to do so within a month, she would return to Paldea. However, she was lucky enough to meet Urbain almost immediately upon entering the city.

Despite admiring pokemon trainers and learning the basic theory behind pokemon battling, Zelie did not have a pokemon companion prior to Chikorita. She dreams of training a pokemon to send back to care for her family in Paldea.
