Are you still reading Mlle de Maupin? Sorry this is kinda out of nowhere, but I know so few people who've read it and I need to talk with everyone possible about Rosette and Theodore-slash-Maupin XD
yes! i’m still not done it cause Midterms Are Hell and all that, but i’d love to talk about it! and don’t worry about barging into my inbox at all, i don’t mind lol
I wish you would write a fic where Theodule and Marius saw more of each other as children, so they're not basically strangers by the time Georges dies.
“Hullo,” Théodule says to the boy standing outside his aunt’s home. “Are you lost?”
The boy certainly looks lost – no parent in sight, staring out into nothing with a furrow on his brow – but he shakes his head all the same. Théodule supposes he would know. It wouldbe tactless to press the point, so he switches conversational gambits.
“My name’s Théodule,” he says, sticking out his left hand. His right is occupied in the important business of holding a newly purchased pastry.
“Marius Pontmercy,” the other boy replies, then seemssurprised to hear himself speak. He opens his mouth again, then shuts it quickly.
“What’s that?” asks Théodule. Marius just shakes his head. Théodule runs through a series of advanced calculations, and arrives at the most probable answer, viz., what he himself would have said in Marius’ place. “Here,” he says, and with great magnanimity he breaks his pastry in half and presses one part into Marius’ hands. (The smaller part; magnanimity has its bounds. But it’s almost half, and he’s fairly sure that counts.)
Marius nods and accepts it, then continues to stand stockstill. The furrow in his brow is even deeper. Clearly the weight of the conversation continues to rest on Théodule.
“Your hair’s shiny,” he tells Marius. It is – so black itlooks like its glistening. He bets it’s soft. Maybe when they’re friends Mariuswill let him touch it and see.
“Oh. Is it?” Marius raises his pastry-less hand a little, as if he’s going to touch his hair to check, then lets it drop back down to hisside.
He still hasn’t touched the pastry. Théodule nods towards itand asks, “Aren’t you going to eat that?”
Marius’ mouth pulls down into a little frown of confusion. “Won’t you want it back?”
“Of course not, it’s yours now!” says Théodule.
“Oh,” says Marius. He looks at the almost-half a pastry like it’s Théodule’s Latin book; utterly incomprehensible. “Are…are you sure?”
Hasn’t anyone ever shareda sweet with you before? Théodule almost asks. He realizes the answer before the words are out of his mouth. With a rush of determination and admiration of his own selfless nature, he takes Marius’ other hand and places the second (larger) pastry half in it. “Here. This is for you too. You should eat it, it’s nice!”
“But what about you?” asks Marius. “You don’t want it?”
“I’ll asks Auntie Gillenromand to give me money for another,” Théodule says proudly. “She like to buy me things.”
“She’s never bought me anything.” says Marius. He doesn’t sound resentful or surprised, just like he’s logging a new fact. Théodule still feels the need to explain.
“Yes, well, she is my aunt.”
“She’s my aunt too,” says Marius.
“Oh!” says Théodule. “Then you’re my cousin! My cousin Marius!” He hadn’t known he had a cousin Marius, but he likes the sound of it.Cousin Marius will have to be his friend and let Théodule touch his shiny hair. Because they’re cousins.
Marius smiles a little at that – so small and quick Théodule would have missed it if he’d blinked. “I think…it could be nice to have a cousin.”
Théodule thinks so too.
op sorry for jumping onto such an old post like this but this is really really cute so i HAD to do a small doodle of it
so here’s a marius looking very perplexed by a chocolatine and a horrified theodule Realizing What Must Be Done

very quick messy doodle of a marius looking pensive and melancholic because i just realized i haven’t actually posted any marii with my new faceclaim for him yet!
wanted to draw another cosette in the style of a fashion plate and decided to do her wedding ensemble! but then i remembered this post by @pilferingapples and realized i could go even more fashion nerd with this than i was already going to
so pic #1 is cosette in a regular sort of wedding dress one would expect to see in 1833 -- these are the refs i used (last one just to mimic the drawing style)
pic #2 is cosette in a wedding dress from ~1685-97 or somewhere around there. i picked those years just for arguments sake, really, and the fact that if gillenormand was born in 1740 then that’d be a somewhat? sensible-ish timeframe for his grandmother to have owned a nice pretty dress in. i used this and this and this as refs (even though they’re in really different styles i just sort of....smooshed them together because i don’t actually know that much about that period of fashion at all. this is a very amateur attempt at starting to understand it haha)
aaand pic #3 is what i imagine would happen if someone tried very hard to tailor an 1833-style dress out of the dress in pic #2! it’s strange-looking but there’s no way it wouldn’t be, right??

@pilferingapples you are the only person on this site i have ever seen blog about mademoiselle de maupin so here take this
!!! Are you reading Maupin?:D
Rosette is seriously undervalued in every Official Commentary on it that I’ve seen, it’s great to see someone else appreciating her!:D
yeah!! i'm not very far in (théodore hasn't even shown up yet) but so far the book is just so much fun to read, and rosette is the best so i had to set the book down for a minute just to doodle her lol

as a spiritual successor to that other post: to me the dahlia/zéphine dynamic is that what started as maybe a flirtatious friend relationship turned into them just genuinely lowkey dating but everyone around them is just not smart enough to notice it
i can’t do inktober proper cause i neither have nor can afford nice supplies for that but here’s a dahlia and some dahlias vaguely in that style
also a reminder that requests are open!!

i just recently joined a ballroom dance club and saw this old timey waltz illustration so i just had to make a quick little doodle of the quartette in fancy dresses dancing having fun
to me the fantine/favourite dynamic is favourite having approximately the emotional maturity of this tweet:
mixed with a bizarre fascination & fantine having no idea what’s going on with favourite’s feelings, or that there’s anything to even suspect at all
refs [x, x]
since cosette dresses like a walking fashion plate, here’s an attempt at cosette in the style of a literal fashion plate

whatever you do. don’t think about fantine walking home from bombarda’s after tholomyes abandoned her. don’t think about it. don’t think about how she must have felt. definitely don’t think about this, the beginning of her descent into metaphorical darkness. don’t do it!
