I find it interesting that although people can contrive many arguments for why they think blyer can't/ shouldn't/ won't happen, they can all be condensed to a single sentiment: "It would catch me off-guard."

"But there's only 4 episodes left." -> It would catch me off-guard. "But Mike told El he loved her in season 4." -> It would catch me off-guard. "Mike is straight because he has a girlfriend." -> It would catch me off-guard. "It would feel random and unearned." -> It would catch me off-guard. "But Mike and El have always been together." -> It would catch me off-guard. "Netflix isn't going to canonize a gay relationship between two main characters in a major show and risk losing viewership." -> It would catch me off-guard.

"It would catch me off-guard" is not a good enough argument.

Like, it all comes down to this idea of admitting that Byler would be a little bit surprising, disruptive, and monumental — and proudly exclaiming that you want it to be predictable, safe, and conventional.

The argument that Mike is straight can very easily be countered by pointing out that closested queer people do often pursue heterosexual relationships — this argument is solid enough without providing evidence of his queer-coding.

The argument that it's sudden or random can be dismissed because there is already years of build-up, and people simply need to recontextualise Mike and Will's relationship on a rewatch.

The argument that Netflix would never do it can be disproven by hit shows like Orange is the New Black, that always centered queerness and queer characters and experienced major success.

No, young Padawan. Byler is not "impossible" or even "unlikely" at all, it's just... surprising. Surprising to most general viewers who pay only light attention (as is their right as a consumer! Not everyone is a mega nerd about Stranger Things!) or who are not personally privvy to queer-coding and queer storytelling (also fine!).

The Duffers have said that a good plot-twist should be surprising, but not altogether unexpected. There should be hints and breadcrumbs. It should be a lightbulb moment.

That is Byler.

So, to anyone who feels Byler would catch them off-guard — good. It's supposed to. That's the point.
