Shout out to the best father-son relationship ever shownd on the screen
it is interesting that captain proton, with tom writing harry consistently as his damsel in distress, only became a thing after several years of harry’s deaths or near misses with death and the many incidences of harry not listening to tom’s attempts to warn him away from a dangerous decision. you can’t keep your bestie safe but you can make up a guy to save him from
@milf-horta no you’re so right, harry’s very socially astute and good at reading people so there’s no way he hasn’t noticed what tom’s doing. either way, it seems like one of those things where they’re both aware of the weirdly emotional undercurrents but don’t ever talk about it. and like whenever b’elanna teases harry about always playing the damsel in distress in tom’s holonovels and he’s probably just like “tsch. you wouldn’t get it 🚬😑”
as i was saying. i think worf dissociates
^ my evidence
he's really good at not outwardly reacting to taunts threats insults and microaggressions he's really good at not letting his emotions show in ways that humans would find threatening he's really good at being a semi-polite blank slate when he needs to be even though he's obviously uncomfortable with it. where does all that discomfort go? where do all those emotions go? where does he go?
once you start dissociating to cope with say a massive trauma at an early age it becomes really hard to stop doing it at random times, and sometimes only extreme sensations can force you back into your body. anywhere here's an unrelated set of scenes where worf seeks out rituals that involve putting your body through extremes
The main frustration of being a Star Trek fan writer is when you put a ton of thought into how an alien culture would actually work and what you come up with is really cool and interesting; and then, the writers of actual canon Star Trek just go ahead and do whatever.
Petition to change copyright laws such that Paramount Pictures gets five years to do something interesting with any new culture that appears in Star Trek, to be judged by a learned panel, and if they fail, this aspect of canon immediately reverts into the public domain.
If nobody writes the unification of Kaminar I'll have no choice but to do it myself.

THE BELL RIOTS
This is just to say the Bell Riots don't take place on August 30th. That's the day Sisko, Dax, and Bashir will have been being arrived* in San Francisco. The Riots will be September 1-3, 2024.
That said, instead of rioting, today I honored Gabriel Bell's heroics with a donation to a couple of charities that help the unhoused and the hungry. I've donated to the Hollywood Food Coalition and the SF Marin Food Bank:
Hollywood Food Coalition Building Community since 1987 - Hollywood Food Coalition (hofoco.org)
San Francisco-Marin Food Bank - Every $1 Donated Provides 2 Meals (sfmfoodbank.org)
I made the donations "In Memory of Gabriel Bell." Please consider honoring Gabriel Bell with donations of your own to these or other organizations that helped the unhoused.
Thank you! Stay safe out there. Live long and prosper!
*Tense is tricky for time travel.
This is a wonderful idea. I just donated to HoFoCo and I encourage my fellow Trek fans who see this to take the time to do so.
Many of us Star Trek fans talk a great deal about how prophetic the show is. But it's a good time for us to remember that science fiction is not just a vehicle for predicting the future, but about questioning what path humanity is on now that leads to our future. I hope we can imagine one where nobody goes hungry or unhoused. That's how we get one step closer to the Star Trek future.
Yknow, deep space nine handles a lot of really heavy subject matter. But voyager is Fucked Up. Like, ds9 is about the horrors of war & in voy shit will just happen. People say voyager is the darkest star trek series and that doesn't feel quite right to me because ds9 is About War and the aftereffects thereof but there's definitely something happening on voyager. It has a really different vibe about it. Ds9 is dark but voyager is scary
Ds9 handles its subject matter gracefully and voyager Does Not. Shit just happens on voyager. You watch an episode of voyager and you say What the fuck? & the episode ends and they never talk about it again
[ID: a reply from @bonecouch that reads, "in this way voyager reminds me more of tos than any other star trek spin off" /end ID]
Oh now there's a take. I think you're onto something. Janeway definitely has a Kirk energy about her & the episode structure is pretty close to the tos formula of going to a place and something fucked up happening and leaving. It just feels slightly *off* though in a way that's hard to pin down... tos was entirely episodic so you don't really *expect* things to be brought up again, but voyager does have a level of continuity, so they kind of leave you waiting. Sometimes things come back later but a lot of it Doesn't. It's all very strange
I think it's silly that the star trek future is still so same-with-same when it comes to alien species. I think a Klingon vessel should comm the enterprise and a random Human ensign should go "Oh my god wait are you from the House of Ragh-Tul? No way! That's my cousin's house!" because they recognize the dialect. Like, we're all neighbors in the universe. That Vulcan is your primary school teacher's daughter. You're an Andorian but you have a Betazoid name because your dad thought it sounded pretty. This random alien knows how to make kimchi without ever having seen a Human because the recipe was part of a trade made decades ago. C'mon man, love thy neighbor with your whole heart!
The Barbie movie but make it Nuclear Wessels
i don’t think b’elanna is ever thinking about seven when she’s in bed with tom because i think that’s a door she’s shut so firmly it would take an army to open but i do think she thinks about janeway because that’s her safe distance mommy issues crush that nevertheless haunts her everyday of her life. she called tom captain in bed once and had to brush it off like it was part of a captain proton roleplay fantasy (horrifying for her personally)
@quarks-pussy REAL
A Betazoid character who isn't in a nurturing profession, but is a tactical officer.
"Captain, I sense they know they're about to get their asses handed to them"
Also, a Klingon character who is in a nuturing profession instead of tactical.
"You are a true child of Kahless for confronting your fears and I am honoured to have helped you."
Klingon therapist: the battle against mental illness cannot be won decisively. It is a long campaign against an enemy who never tires, whose forces swell to twice their size whenever you look away. Battle against a foe of such magnitude, who occupies your very mind… every moment you survive is a triumph against all odds. There is no more honorable combat.
I mean lower decks basically had both of those this season.
OK OK OK OK OH SHIT OK
