A woman whose epilepsy was greatly improved by an experimental brain implant was devastated when she was forced to have it removed.
A woman whose epilepsy was greatly improved by an experimental brain implant was devastated when, just two years after getting it, she was forced to have it removed due to the company that made it going bankrupt.
Specifically, because she couldn't afford to buy the implant from the company. They basically took her implant back to recoup their losses. This is what happens when you privatize healthcare and health research. The group providing her with this implant should not have been able to go bankrupt in the first place, let alone repossess her implant to pay off their debts.
This is what disabled people mean when we say that cyberpunk horror is just a reality for us. This woman was literally forced to undergo a surgery because she couldn't pay to keep the implant already inside her brain. How long till companies start repossessing pacemakers and transplants?
Durable medical equipment companies in the US already do this.
DMEs will repossess your medical devices if you rent it through them and lose your insurance or your living situation. This includes feeding tube pumps and higher value mobility devices like motorized wheelchairs. I specify living situation because even with insurance they see homelessness as a liability to the medical equipment.
They have no qualms with letting you die and in the case of feeding tubes, they have no issues with letting you starve a bit faster.
This is all hellish, and literally the plot of a musical. I thought that shit was just gross fiction until this morning.

The 2023 Gender Census is now open!
[ Link to survey ]
The 10th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is nowĀ open until 9th May 2023.
Itās short and easy, about 5 minutes probably.
After the survey is closed Iāll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like weāre part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers whoād be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful - itās what helped us get 40,000 responses last year.
Survey URL:Ā https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesnāt fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
For the curious, you can also spy on some graphs and demographic data for the incoming responses here.
Thank you so much!

Wednesday 26th April 2023 - day 18
Good morning [in my part of the world], folks! Just thought I'd drop in a quick note at an uncommon time of the day, before I go get my breakfast...
Responses/attention have slowed down a lot since day 1, we're currently at 21 responses per hour and on the first complete day of the survey it was 400 responses per hour!
But it looks like we'll probably get to 33,000 responses by the end of today (UK time).
New Zealand is still the most nonbinary English-speaking nation by percentage of the population, followed by Canada.
The most common age range is 16-20, so if you know anyone older and genderly-interesting, drop them a line and share this URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The least common time for people to submit the survey is 3am UK time, and that percentage is gradually increasing since I scheduled a few posts on Mastodon to go out at 3am inviting people to take the survey.
I think that's all the news? Things are getting quieter, and I'm also enjoying the way more people are coming in from different places online as time goes by! Thank you to everyone who has shared the survey, we don't pay for any advertising, it's all word-of-mouth, so I couldn't do it without you. <3
You know what? Fuck you.
*unshrinkies your dinks*
no..... my dinks....
Obviously there are many things to dislike about adulthood but as someone who grew up in an abusive household for whom adulthood offered the only chance at an escape, it's incredibly important to me that i romanticize adulthood whenever possible because i know there are kids and teenagers like me out there who are seeing nothing but complaints about rent and taxes and the loneliness of living on your own and i know they're going to internalize all of that and assume it means that adulthood won't offer them the freedom and safety they've been dreaming of. So while i never want to minimize the difficulties of being an adult, i also want to highlight how incredibly nice it can be to finally have ownership of your life and your body and your time and money and food and everything else in a way that you never had before. You can choose when you wake up! You can choose what you have for breakfast! You can choose when to go to sleep or if you want to (inadvisably) stay up all night watching tv in the living room! In the living room! You can choose what to watch! These are little things, but they are worth taking pleasure in, and they are worth looking forward to.
can someone please get these hoes under control i'm BUSY
