it’s actually amazing how many non-addicts think they’re better people than addicts just, like, by default
addicts aren’t worse than you just by virtue of having an addiction js. you’re not automatically a better person than all addicts. if you think you are then you are, in fact, a shitty person
tumblr in general – outside of the other addicts i know – has kind of a bizarre perception of substance abuse in general
everyone needs to realize that YOU KNOW ADDICTS. there’s a 99.99% chance that everyone on this website knows an addict. and i’m not talking about abusers. not every addict is an abusive parent. that is a myth. i’m talking about your nicest friend, your cousin, your friend’s mom who is always so friendly, i’m talking about your younger siblings and your friend’s friends, your teachers and coworkers. good decent people who are addicts behind closed doors
there needs to be a lot more discussion about addiction on this website in general. the way it disproportionately affects mentally ppl, abuse victims, LGBT people, homeless people… addiction is common. addiction isn’t just the meth addict you saw on television last week
and u know what? the meth addict you saw on television last week isn’t some circus freak for tlc to profit off of. they are a real, living human being and still deserve love & respect
at the end of the day outside of “abusive parents who are addicts” there’s little to no discussion about addiction on this website and it’s frustrating and tiring for me bc there’s so much mischaracterization of the experiences of addicts
addicts can be shy, we can be soft and sweet, we can be anxious, we can be friendly, we can be responsible and hard working
we all need to work harder to dismantle the myths of addiction & build up addicts and create a world where addicts are given respect & patience instead of disdain and outright mockery when we choose to be open & honest about our addiction
bc the way things are? a lot of the addicts i know – myself included (all of whom are marginalized ppl, btw) – still have trouble opening up and talking honestly about our struggles because it can be so incredibly alienating and scary. even in the supportive & understanding environment that tumblr has created most addicts i know are still largely silent about issues that literally affect us day to day
we as a community have to do better
As a society, we need to stop assuming that everyone enjoys drinking alcohol.
Lmao @ people who think I’m ridiculous for this post. I’m defensive because alcoholism is a huge issue. Everywhere in the world. Not to mention, I know it’s hard for some of you fucks to believe because of how widely accepted alcohol is, but there are a HUGE amount of people who have personal issues with alcohol. Either being recovering or previous alcoholics themselves, having a close personal tie with someone who abused alcohol, growing up in an unstable alcoholic household, having DEEPLY EMBEDDED family or spouse issues ALL because of alcohol. FUCK OFF with your me being so offended bullshit. Just assume people are sober till you find out on **their** terms they aren’t. Don’t expect that everyone likes to drink. Just like you wouldn’t expect that everyone likes to smoke cannabis, why would you do it with alcohol? (That’s rhetorical, it’s obviously because basically everyone assumes the entire world enjoys drinking). It’s not hard. Don’t offer people drinks unless you know they drink. BYE.
My favorite response when I tell people im straight edge is “what? You’ll never drink ever? Not one drink? I don’t believe you.” And they’ll laugh And I’ll look them straight in their fucking eye and tell them both my parents, and my aunt are recovering alcoholics. The rest of my family? Has never tried, nor ever got the chance to recover from their addiction. It’s by some miracle my mother is alive right now because she drank so much her liver stopped working. She was in a coma for two weeks. The doctors almost gave up on her. My dad was an abusive drunk and then turned to hard drugs and that certainly didn’t help anything. My 3 younger sisters and I were almost put into foster care because of the both of them. I was only about 14 at the time. Making my youngest sister, 7. And because of all of this my family went bankrupt and we were almost homeless. All because of drinking :)
That usually shuts them up real fucking fast but, I shouldn’t have to explain that to anyone. I shouldn’t have to defend my (perfectly healthy!) choices!
If someone tells you they don’t drink, it’s for a fucking reason. Don’t be a dick. Casual alcoholism is a huge fucking problem in the world and its scary that most people can’t see it.
Also, some people just… don’t like drinking. There are people out there who just genuinely do not enjoy drinking alcohol. They don’t like the taste, they don’t like being impaired, and they have no desire to try to force themselves into enjoying it just because someone else thinks it’s “weird”.
There are all kinds of reasons that someone might not choose to drink, and all of those reasons are valid. There’s nothing wrong with it, it doesn’t mean they “can’t have fun”, and I guarantee you they’re not judging you for drinking. And if they are? It’s definitely not as much as they’re being judged for not drinking.
Don’t try to force people to drink. Don’t assume everyone likes to drink. And if someone says they don’t drink? Don’t force them to explain why just to get you to stop hounding them.

The best anti-meth campaign I can think of is a conversation with my fucking roommate at the mental hospital. He’s a good man, and he knows meth is bad for him, and he knows the people who are making it don’t give a shit about his health. And he isn’t garbage, and he deserves a good life.

Sober Queers Do Exist - Zine Callout • Sober Queers Do Exist: Sober Queer and Trans People On How They Got Sober and Stay Sober • This zine will centre the voices of people that have experiences with addiction, alcoholism, and/or self-defined substance umisuse, but will also accept submissions from people who identify as straight edge, or who are sober for political, health, religious or personal reasons. This zine will accept submissions from people with long term sobriety, people who are new to sobriety, and people trying to get sober. • This zine will not moralize sobriety, shame substance use, or contribute to a hierarchy of drug use. We value and respect the substance users in our communities. We recognize that relationships to substance use are diverse and complex and we do not believe there is a right way or wrong way to relate to substance use. • This zine will create a space for queer and trans sober people to share their stories. Sharing our experiences about getting and staying sober is a way to build community, and let others getting sober know they are not alone. • We are seeking submissions in a variety of formats, including personal reflections, stories, poetry, short essays, and prose. What do you mean by in recovery?
‘in recovery’ just refers to any time someone is recovering from some type of illness. it usually implies that the person acknowledges and is treating the illness in some way. if you’re asking about the most recent article (not written by me) and its use of ‘in recovery’, i think it’s referring to members of the LGBTQ community who had/have an addiction.
Many queers today express discomfort with the notion of disclosing their recovery within the queer community. As in other oppressed communities in which substance use is a social norm, there is often a reverse stigma and harsh judgment placed on people in recovery who no longer share common activities that center around the use of substances. Further, oppressed communities tend to shy away from addressing addiction as a social problem in their specific communities, fearing that it will bring further negative attention and blame upon them by the dominant culture. Because of these variables, it is important for us to tease out the issue of addiction in our community from the separate but related issue of the “right to use,” and the historic role of substance use in subcultures promoting sexual liberation. Thoughtful dialogue can direct us to recovery solutions that include not only those who practice abstinence from substances as a means to generate their recovery from addiction, but also those who chose to use substances in a way that promotes informed choice, awareness, and acknowledgment of risks, while reducing harm.

November 15 to 21 is National Addiction Awareness Week and this year’s theme is “Addiction Matters”. Pieces to Pathways has a developed a set of fact sheets that detail the key findings of the needs assessment conducted by P2P on substance use among LGBTTQQ2SIA youth in Toronto.
This fact sheet highlights that of the survey participants that had previously accessed services, 65.1% felt that service provider and/or client orientation toward their LGBTTQQ2SIA identity negatively impacted their service use experiences.
Additionally, only 29% of the service providers that were interviewed during the P2P consultation stated that their services were accessible to LGBTTQQ2SIA youth that use substances.
Currently, there are 0 services in Canada that are culturally specific and developmentally appropriate for LGBTTQQ2SIA youth that want support with their substance use. P2P hopes to create a service that fills this gap.
