am i crazy to think "separating the art from the artist" is incredibly selfish
something something individualist society but i feel completely ignoring the author's life and intention in your own interpretation is incredibly flawed. this can lead to people re-claiming narratives (which is cool only if the author is not profiting (ala h.p.lovecraft or lL frank baum)) but it more often than not leads to people erasing narratives. by ignoring the world and life the author lived you're ignoring how the story was written to begin with.
one of my favorite things to say about Undine is that the story can be viewed as an allegory for mental or physical disorder, and how people will marry someone disabled or neurodivergent knowing they are, and then freak out when they act disabled or neurodivergent. she says "im a weird fish lady and if you stay with me you're in it for the long haul" and he said "sure whatever" and immediately when she started acting like a fish lady he freaked the fuck out. i am also well aware this book was made in 1811 and that this was in no way close to the author's intention, so i always state beforehand that this interpretation comes from a modern lens. Similarly with another favorite book, the entirety of Rebecca the main character definitely has some type of anxiety disorder, as most of the book is within Mrs. DeWinter's head as she spirals before being broken out of it. I am also well aware in 1938 when it was written; "female hysteria" was just being phased out. This one can be a little closer to home and can have me speculate about Daphne du Maurier's own experience, but from the angle that this is not a modern author writing about a woman's anxiety disorder.
I think more people should know that L. Frank Baum was racist asf, in later books taking inspiration from minstrelsy for how the scarecrow acted and creating a society of white and black dolls where the black dolls were the servants and that's "just how things were." because it gives amazing context to the social issues Wicked has always been commenting on, and now even more obviously. Something like this would never fly (lol) under L. Frank Baum, but he's not profiting and his work is being reclaimed by those he hurt.
When I say there's no right answers to media interpretation but there are wrong ones, take people posting about the first Wicked movie saying Elphaba shouldn't be played by a black actress or "why can't they just be two girl friends" where they completely miss the point the original author and later writers were trying to make. You're ignoring how queer the original author was. THIS is removing the art from the artist, but something like The Wiz I don't think is. The original author was racist, fuck that, we're doing it anyway. Something more like taking or removing the art from the artist, not completely ignoring that they ever existed.
"the Portrait of Dorian Gray should've been more openly gay" is a very-well known shitty goodreads post for good reason. Oscar Wilde was in a time period that got him imprisoned for being gay, it's from such a modern perspective it hurts. THIS is separating the art from the artist.
Separating the art from the artist is hard because it is a surgical procedure with only casualties, similarly to separating the heart from the body. We can medicate the heart, and do surgeries to fix problems and keep the human alive, but you can never remove the heart without killing the host
Have we gotten so far from art being a window and not a mirror that the work itself must've been written for you? Have we expected so many self-inserts that when a character is not the work is bad, even if the character was a self-insert of the author? Why do we demand the curtains are closed so we can only see our reflection from the glass, falling in love with ourselves instead of the work like narcissus at the lake, as even echo who could only repeat what he said, begs for him to love her? Why is separating the art from the artist a triumph instead of a tragedy? When Natsume Sōseki wrote a parody of a philospher's thoughts of the future in his time, "No one at all will read your poems. Not because the poems are yours and you are a bad poet, but because individuality has intensified to such an extent that anything written by other people holds no interest for anyone. This stage of the literary future is already evidenced in England where two of their leading novelists, Henry James and George Meredith, have personalities so strong and so strongly reflected in their novels that very few people care to read them. And no wonder. Only readers with personalities of matching force could find such works of any interest. That trend will accelerate and, by the time that marriage is finally recognized as immoral, all art will have disappeared. Surely you can see that, when anything that either of us might write has become quite meaningless to the other, then there will be nothing, let alone art, which we can share. We shall all be excommunicated from each other." why did he receive a prophetic vision instead of a laugh?
I saw this video about a doctor who performed an MRI on a 5 year old and discovered she essentially had “brain damage” from excessive iPad use, as the white matter in her brain couldn’t form properly due to an understimulated environment.
Hmm it’s almost like there’s supposed to be adult figures responsible for monitoring her screen time and making sure she develops properly… certainly this isn’t the result of neglect at the hands of her parents…
“This 5 year old is brain damaged by excessive iPad use”
Translation: This 5 year old is developmentally impaired by neglectful parents who used an iPad as a stand-in for social and environmental stimulation / interaction for hours at a time during critical early stages of child development. The iPad is the cop-out.
“Children don’t have the strength to hold pencils anymore because they only use screens.”
Translation: Parents aren’t making the conscious effort to help their children develop necessary skills and letting iPads raise them.
When are people going to realize the iPads and whatnot are the instruments through which the neglect is happening through and not the cause? How the fuck do you let your child have such a severe lack of physical strength in their hands that they can’t hold a pencil properly?
People will see a study suggesting children with higher screen times have poorer or negative developmental outcomes and immediately say it’s the screens causing this, and not the more likely fact that higher screen time = less engagement time with their environment, physical exercise, parents, family, and their peers, all of which are NECESSARY for a healthy upbringing as a social species.
It’s like saying a dog who was kept in a cage all its life and left with atrophied muscles was damaged by the cage, and not by the fact its owners were too lazy to play or walk their dog in order for its muscles to build properly. The cage is the instrument of neglect and the owners are the perpetrators, in the same way parents are the perpetrators and weaponizing screen time as an excuse and painting themselves as helpless bystanders.

Yes, Magnus the Red is short-sighted and arrogant as all get out, but at least part of his motivation for going way off the deep end had to be the fact that the flesh change was a deceptively simple issue to solve.
Imagine: You're the pinnacle of your species, elevated above all others, able to comprehend and apply forces that could tear another's soul apart. Your warriors spontaneously exploding into writhing goo sounds catastrophic on paper, but at the end of the day, it's just a metaphysical medical issue. Not terrible, considering what other legions have to deal with, right?
And yet, no matter what you try to fix it, nothing works. The problem persists and you start getting desperate, frustrated. You're supposed to have all the answers! You're the scholar, the mage, the keeper of the arcane. Peering under the veil of reality to commune with its tumultuous undercurrent is just Tuesday for you. How does such a simple little puzzle like this continue to stump you?
From what I've read, Magnus seems to work best whenever he's paired with someone more grounded. Not just to keep him from skipping off down a new research rabbit hole every two minutes, but to support and stabilize in general.
Being a psyker in the Imperium is already a very isolating position: you're constantly regarded with suspicion, your primary worth lies in how your unique properties can be harnessed for the benefit of others. Magnus thinks he can't rely on anyone else to help him, both because he thinks no one else could understand and of the risk of attracting the wrong kind of attention and getting his legion censured permanently.
In comparison to other traitor primarchs, Magnus sticks out to me because his primary goal isn't even directly related to the rebellion itself. He just keeps desperately bashing his head into the same brick wall of a problem repeatedly, ignorant to the fact that that method is exactly what caused his legion's situation to spiral in the first place.

Important reminder
This reminds me of the fact that "Ancient Egypt" goes back so many thousands of years, that the most recent "Ancient Egyptians" were already studying (even more) Ancient Egypt.
Not even the most recent ones. It was an Egyptian prince from the 13th century BCE studying and restoring artifacts from the 26th century BCE.
For context, the last Pharaoh, Cleopatra VII, lived in the 1st century BCE. Prince Khaemweset, known as "the first egyptologist", was as ancient to her as the pyramids and tombs he was studying were ancient to him.
I remember having me mind completely blown when I learned that the "New Kingdom" was pre-Bronze Age Collapse.
This has totally be mentioned in another fork of this post, but it reminds me quite a bit of Ennigaldi-Nanna's museum, a museum in Ur, c. 530 BC, which housed mesopotamian artifacts dating back in some cases to the 20th century BC
for the record im not technially 100% anti-AI, in the sense that its a broad category of tech being lumped under one umbrella term so it feels over-zealous to say i hate all of it all the time forever. but i also think trying to discuss what it actually IS good for is difficult right now when i cant take one step without something trying to convince me to use chatgpt to summarize my life and speed up my hobbies and turn my friends into chatbots and optimize my life into oblivion. i am certain there is nuance to the topic but can we stop cramming the square peg into the round hole before you start trying to sell me on the legitimate benefits of the square peg. please.
Neural Nets have existed for decades and are genuinely useful. It's a form of AI that recognizes patterns, and can do stuff like identify cancer cells, tell whether an egg is fertilized or not, detect fraud, and optimize routes.
Those are Expert Systems, tuned to do exactly one thing. If you (say) ask a medical expert system a question about financial law, it's useless. The autopilot that flies a 787 has no idea how to drive a truck on the freeway. A Coulter Counter is excellent at identifying lymphocytes in a blood sample but can't predict the next card in a blackjack game.
And so on.
The problem with so-called generalized AI (AGI) is that we don't have that yet. It doesn't exist. It MIGHT some day, but AGI has been "10 years away" since the 1980s. The goals keep moving as we learn more about how people and machines process data.
But the current crop of AI techbros have been selling generative Large Language Model AI (LLM) as AGI because generative systems do a good job of faking it. There's no actual thought going on, merely the illusion of thought via predicting the next word in a sentence accurately.
If you let a human toddler listen to 800 hours of YouTube car influencer videos, that toddler might end up sounding like a car influencer. They'd parrot horsepower numbers and 0 to 60 times, mention EV range and MSRP numbers.
But they wouldn't understand any of it.
That's ChatGPT.
And yeah, it's worse than useless because it doesn't even know when it's lying or hallucinating. It just babbles convincingly until you stop it.
But for techbros to make money selling that as "AI"? It's the perfect scam, especially if you don't understand how it works.
I fucking hate it.
people will claim to be filled with whimsy and joy for life but then hate musicals……. the vile tongue of man will never cease lying
