high ambient background football levels reminded me to actually finish this Personal Lore That Caused My Books comic
when I was in high school I had a literature teacher who had a policy of unlimited extra credit. All you had to do was read a book by a notable author (his discretion) and have a little chat with him after school to prove that you read it. No limits, no need for variety (one month I decided I really loved Kurt Vonnegut and just read everything of his I could get my hands on).
Yes, I was tearing through books constantly, and talking to this teacher at least weekly. Because even though I always loved reading as a kid, literature was always a very weak subject for me in terms of a teaching-to-standardized-test school setting (I just do awful on "what color were the curtains" type multiple choice questions. Those details don't stick in my memory THEY JUST DON'T). But that didn't matter for this class. I could just read my way out of any bad test score. I have always had fond memories of how I "fudged" my way through that class and "abused' the extra credit policy.
I was thinking about it again today, and only just now realized that he absolutely tricked me into being well-read, while my teenage self thought I was totally getting away with something. THAT MOTHERFUCKER. I hope he's doing well.
And hang out they did

Last night I was talking to my boyfriend, and I couldn’t think of the word ‘library’, so I said ‘book ranch’. He thought it was hilarious and started making up alternative names for ‘librarian’.
“Cowbook! Like cowboy! No…Readcher? Like Rancher? No, fuck this is hard…”
and just now I heard him yell “BOOKAROO” from the other end of the apartment in the most triumphant tone of voice i’ve ever heard
“Howdy, pardner. Name’s Tex. Biblio Tex.”
Certified Library Post
A series of events:
1. I put in an Annual Leave request form almost 3 weeks ago and my boss has not approved it yet
2. I went into my office today and replaced every single writing utensil with crayons in preparation for April Fools Day on Monday
3. Whilst searching for pens to remove, I found my unsigned Annual Leave form in my boss’s drawer
4. I placed my unsigned Annual Leave form in a photo frame and put it on his desk
5. The frame I used was from a photo of his kids that I deemed less important than my Leave form
6. My boss sometimes goes into the office on Saturdays to work
7.
Happy 2 year anniversary to the post that my old boss allegedly now has framed in his office, next to the recovered photo of his children.

would you ever accept a patient telling you their life is not worth living, if they had believed this for a long enough time and were in severe enough pain? maybe after ten years of treatment? fifteen?
To be honest, I’m not sure. I value life and I think the circumstances that would necessitate giving up on life are complicated. I support dignity in dying, and I know that can include medically-assisted suicide, and I’m just SO glad I haven’t had to be involved in any case like that. It’s such a complicated topic and to be honest I think in most instances I would say no, but I know life is not so simple. I’m genuinely not sure. I think it would depend on the person.
By-and-large, though, I think that people who are at that point have been let down by a lot of people. I think back often to the time I got my car stuck in a mud puddle while driving to o a camping spot. I tried everything to get it out and nothing worked, so, with dying light and decreasing temperatures I called my dad who showed up as fast as he could. The second he got there he said “Yep, you’re nice and stuck!” and went to go grab some tools to get me unstuck. I told him I’d already tried what he was thinking and it didn’t work, and he said “I know, but you didn’t try it with me.” He got it unstuck pretty quick using the same skill I’d tried, and that phrase, that “I know, but you didn’t try it with me” has stuck with me. He didn’t think I wasn’t trying, he didn’t think less of me for needing help, he looked at my situation and saw a two-person job that had only been attempted by one person. I think a lot of life is like that, especially pain. It’s a motto I try and bring to therapy. If you feel like there’s no way of making it work, bring in help first and see if that changes things.
The real horror of a Stepford Wives situation isn't 'the suburbs are creepy' or even 'conformity is creepy' or 'I don't wanna be replaced by a robot'
The horror is the idea that you might choose to spend your life with somebody only to realize they don't actually want a partner and friend, somebody with ambitions and thoughts and joy. They want somebody productive, compliant, and sexually available, and all your internal life is nothing but a barrier to that. That the person you love only loves what you do for them, and the less of the an actual person you are, the happier they are.
A story in three parts
this is in yiddish too!! shm-reduplication, so phrases like "fancy-shmantzy" (implying mockery). and not only in hindi ("chai-shai" for tea and snacks) but it also filtered into english used by hindi speakers—e.g. my mother-in-law would always say "party-sharty" to mean a party and then the afterparty/hangout following. it's so beautiful :')
@lingthusiasm i don't think we've had an episode on this? ::wiggles eyebrows::
English also had a nicknaming form in the late 18th-early 19th century like this. it involved switching the first letter of a consonant-led name with a P and hyphenating it; the most common example is Peggy and Polly as nicknames from Margaret (Margaret > Meg > Meggy > Meggy-Peggy > Peggy and Margaret > Moll > Molly > Molly-Polly > Polly), but I've also seen "Sal-Pal" and "Sally-Pally" in c. 1810 letters from one specific family here in Boston
Mongolian does it too! Which is not a shock as such since it's related to Turkish... "Go to the shop and get lemonade, memonade..."
Jacob Tierney talks about “boring” and “fuck you” meaning “I love you” for Shane and Ilya:
“A really good friend of mine—a person who reads my scripts who's a brilliant novelist named Rainbow Rowell—she read the first episode and she said to me… “just remember that every ‘fuck you’ is ‘I love you,’ and maybe you're saying ‘fuck you’ too many times”
“And I was like oh, that's such a good call. That's a great call. Because it was just a reminder of all of the things they say to each other that are not ‘I love you’ and that are not—”
“Boring, you know, when Ilya calls Shane boring, he's saying he's in love with him. And he's not boring, [Ilya] is endlessly fascinated by Shane. And the only way he can communicate that is by making fun of him and calling him boring, because anything else would rip his soul out through his face.”
“Like that's the idea, and so even the words we use to obfuscate matter, you know?”

That was delicious. I genuinely don't think I've seen anyone line up those scene parallels so well before. This was a perfect snapshot of every branch, rock, and mattress they hit on their way down
The Germans really cooked making "Hobbyless behaviour" an insult. It is both devastating, applicable to a wide range of people and behaviours, and doesn't resort to swearing.
Man ranting on the internet about the Superbowl halftime show or complaining that something is "woke"? Hobbyless Behaviour. Girls mocking another girl for not looking right? Hobbyless Behaviour. Mindless vandalism? Hobbyless Behaviour.
It is more powerful than "get a life" or the English "You're Sad" because it gets to the central point of the matter, and that is wonderful. Danke, Deutsch.
