definitely someone from the wolf pack— embry and quil seem like they’d be super fun to hang with. but also leah is my GIRL and deserves some love. any of those three tbh.

gonna go ahead and share my “hot take” or whatever:

jacob imprinting on renesmee is absolutely gross, disgusting, completely despicable. i will never deny that. the fact that imprinting exists in these books at all is awful, and it’s even worse knowing that two children are imprints (interesting that people are constantly up in arms about renesmee but i never hear a peep about claire or how “gross” quil is)

however, please realize that meyer, who we have established is a violently racist white woman, wrote these characters. she, not jacob, not quil, not any of these characters of color (who are also all teenagers, i might add!) created the imprinting plotline. a white woman in her mid-30s decided to take characters she had already written racist characterization after racist characterization for, and give them child grooming and pedophilic storylines. to wish violence, injury, to hate these characters for things out of their control (literally - no one controls who they imprint on, and we need to look at this story in its racist context) is, at risk of sounding repetitive, racist. 

imprinting? gross. imprinting on a literal infant? also gross. 

but to cheer on a white character throwing a native character across a room and threatening him for something way out of his control? guess what! gross too.

all of those things can be true. we can talk about the nasty implications of imprinting without advocating violence a character that has already faced so much violence and trauma.

As someone who LOVED the Twilight series, read fanfic, made fanart, and will most definitely have a raucous, drunken read-aloud party of Edward’s inner monologue if Midnight Sun does actually drop…  I think it is so important to never erase that Twilight perpetuates racist and othering ideas about Indigenous people, and the series’ success did not benefit the Quileute Tribe monetarily while SMeyer and the franchise rocketed to mega-success, fame, and wealth.  There’s a lot of talk about the series’ misogyny, which is important, but I think that in 2020, anybody who’s White and who’s still participating in the fandom should centralize critiques of the series’ racism, learn about the issues, and more than that, should back that up with funds and material support.
