Okay, so this isn't going to be.....pretty? ..but i just really really I need to say this.
Ps. This contains some spoilers.
So, like many of my lovely followers and people in this world...I LOVE reading; so much. This year alone I've read over 30 books.
So naturally when my college demands that every student takes a fine arts class, I sign up for a creative writing class.
I didn't really know what I was getting myself into; but all I knew was that I loved reading and several times I've even attempted to write my own stories. Anywho, my professor was amazing (yup, friends with her on facebook) and she taught me one VERY IMPORTANT thing when it comes to creative writing.
YOUR CHARACTER HAS TO BE THEIR OWN PERSON.
YOU. (the author) CAN. NOT. CONTROL. THEM.
So, like me, you're probably sitting there...if you're even still reading this, being like whhhhaaaaa?!?! Yeah, it came to me as a shock; but every character is their own person.
They have their own thoughts, not your thoughts on what should happen in the story. Their own feelings, not what you WANT them to feel.
She gave us a great analogy when it came to creative writing: "Creative writing is like driving a car at night with only your head lights on; you can only see a little bit in front of you at a time and your main character is the driver. You both won't know if there's a sharp bend in the road or if there's no road at all because of construction until they get there."
So why am I ranting about this you ask? Well here's the reason...
I am so sick of people criticizing/ complaining about "how said character was perfect and shouldn't have died and they were so amazing and how mad they are that the author killed them off." and more stupid bullshit like that.
Do you think that JK Rowling just woke up one day and was like, "Ya know what, I don't feel like writing about Dumbledore anymore...I guess I'll just kill him."
Harry had learned all that he could from Dumbledore and it was time for Harry to grow up. Even Dumbledore knew that this was Harry's battle, not his and tried to prepare him as best he could.
Do you think Rowling wanted to kill practically everyone she took so long to develop over the first 6 books?
Do you think that Suzanne Collins knew she was going to and wanted to kill Prim when she started writing the Hunger Games?
What about Veronica Roth...think she REALLY just wanted to kill Tris' parents and have Tris be mentally scared for all of Insurgent for killing Will???
And those are only a few examples. Now, don't get me wrong...I freaking balled like a baby when Dumbledore died and nearly threw Mockingjay when Prim died...but there was a reason why these authors did that.
These authors aren't just randomly having a morbid day and want to kill their characters that we all know and love. It is whats right for the story.
So if you're still reading this, next time you freak out about a character dying and yell and curse at the author and go on a rant on one of the fandom confession blogs. Really stop and think....or even google for all I care...why did said character die. 99.9% of the time there is a good reason.
Now, I'm not saying that you should totally just give up all of your opinions on a book/ series but to everyone who read this; please...stop complaining so much as to how your favorite character died and just love these books again. Remember how much entertainment they gave you; how they took you to a whole new world; how you stayed up late even if you had to get up the next morning because you were just that hooked.
THESE BOOKS ARE PERFECT JUST THE WAY THEY ARE.
