Sometimes it annoys Ilya - the public's perception of him - the way he's portrayed as this rash person who somehow stumbled into glory based on talent that is simply incidental. As though he didn't have to work for it. As though his big mouth is a character flaw and not a valid and targeted strategy of goading other teams into a penalty. As though his womanising means he's not a serious person. As though he's out getting trashed each night rather than having a few drinks to stimulate team bonding before heading to bed, rarely even breaking curfew these days. Sometimes he hates it.

He knows some of it is earned. That he certainly did nothing to discourage this reputation during his first few years in the States. That his posturing to the media was portrayed as disregard rather than something that covered up his initial insecurity of having to do media in his second language. He knows he leaned into it. Still does, in some ways. It's just that it feels like no one is looking very hard; certainly not looking beyond what they expect to find. And that can be frustrating.

But there are moments where he hates it less. Like when he shows up at Hollander's place and can see he's fuming, after Ilya scored on the power play, and says, "I can't believe Comeau took that fucking bait." He's not angry at Ilya. He's angry at his teammate for not having seen through Ilya's play; for having let him get away with it and walk away with the victory. Moments where he feels seen through the haze of the media's portrayal of him. And maybe those moments feel more special because of how most people don't look hard enough to see it; maybe, if only for a moment, the fact that Hollander is paying attention feels like it might mean something.
