Jean's secret treasure vault is SO fun and i love it so much. i have no idea what's going on with it, but i like that she gets to share it with cable
if she wants to have a cave full of extremely valuable stuff in the middle of venice, i guess she can??? that's her prerogative??? to have discovered this ancient trove of stuff that probably came from like the crusades and to have kept it hidden??? that's okay, right???
also, she says she discovered it before the x-men, during the time when it was just her and charles and THAT is a story i want to see
there is a sincerely under explored period of time that is Charles, Jean and Amelia going on world exploring adventures to hone Amelia's astral teleportation skills and take Jean sight seeing. Charles has been teaching Jean since she was at least 12, and Amelia left when Scott arrived, so Jean must have been 14 at the oldest, leaving 2 years if not more to have a teleporter with Red Cross doctor experience, a telekinetic with a youthful sense of adventure, and a telepath with not enough morals, a tendency for using people, yet always the best intentions. it could work as its own series.
Amelia takes them to Venice for the day, the three of them get into shenanigans that lead to finding an ancient trove of stuff that probably came from the crusades, and Charles lets Jean seal it up to keep secret rather then give it to a museum because the idea just makes her so happy.
Later, when Jean is in Greece, on an island Charles once spent time on, thinking the love her life had just died, Amelia having left because she found the venture that eventually got them killed to horrible to be a part of, she charters a little boat over to Italy, and uncovers an old childhood memory. it doesn't feel like enough.
guest appearances by Forge and Moira. really interested in that pro-to version of the X men before the o-5 came in and it's Charles, his girlfriend who does not believe in this at all, his ex-fiance who is 100% on board but questions his methods, a Vietnam war criminal who is making weapons for the government for profit, and a 13 year old girl. must have been a wild time
So...I really want to know the history of Xavier and Forgeš¤Ø...I havenāt seen any writers writing about their exact meeting so far, except when Claremont wrote forge exclaiming āso thatās the legendary Charles Xavierā when Xavier returned from the alien empire.
Does this mean this was their first meeting?š¤
Hmm, itās just hard for me not to be distracted by too many subsequent plots, such as in 97, forge directly tells ororo that heās an old friend of Xavierās (okay, I know I shouldnāt mix this two together)
but thereās also one plot in Mystique where mystique becomes Xavier to wake up the mind-controlled forge and says āIām your oldest friendā
... like WTF š¤Æ
unless forge didnāt have any friends before meeting Xavier, but if according to the upper setting forge met X-Men much earlier than Xavier, even without mentioning ororo (because after āMystiqueā, mystique did indeed become ororo to wake up forge), wolverine, banshee, arenāt they better buds of forge?
Other than that, I have many more vague reasons, such as Forgeās help to Xavierās dream from beginning to end.
Even after he left X-Men, declaring that āhe should wake up from his dream,ā he still provided Xavier with personal assistance... That was still in fact serving Xavierās dream...
At the end of the day, itās still because I really like these two characters.š¢ I want to know more about their past stories. Xavier might have a lot of history, but Forge describes less ink. This makes me a little sad, but it also gives me more space to imagine how they might have started contacting. Maybe Xavier met them early when negotiating with the government? Or maybe Xavier contacted the Inventor very early with brain waves but for various reasons, he couldnāt come forward to provide help earlier... Thatās all my sleep talk. btw Claremont, Iām sorry.š
I want to talk about a somewhat controversial retcon Gail Simone introduced involving Charles Xavier and new character Sarah gauntās romantic history. Iām not going to go into their entire relationship but what me and many other fans noticed is that Sarah gaunt is written to be an adult and Charles got into Oxford at sixteen. Making him a minor during the relationship. And itās been clearly stated by Simone herself that Charles met her before he did Moira which he met at seventeen
Thereās tons of proof to back up Sarah being an adult (and later confirmation that she was written as one) starting with fact she continuously calls him a boy. Indicating an age gap. We donāt know how long she attended collage but most would assume even an 18yr wouldnāt call a 16yr āsweet boyā + she acts somewhat doting towards him.
she still makes it very clear she slept with him evident by the fact he thought she was pregnant and later sexual dialogue.
but even getting rid of their age gap the relationship is clearly still predatory in nature itās an obviously weird dynamic. She immediately singles out an isolated boy she knows people are afraid of āthey call you a witch boyā and rubs off on him in a way that looks very purposeful and heavily flirtatious. (Smirking. Remaining eye contact.) +
She Gets him to take her out. She singles out his insecurities (being bald) and lovebombs him. I even think she calls him ājaguarā to make him feel heās accomplished and attractive to her.
Itās also obvious that Charles doesnāt understand heās being groomed as he just escaped his abusive home he states how lonely he is and has traveled all the way to Oxford alone. she seems nice to him + heās a child getting affection from a beautiful woman so suddenly. Heās in a very vulnerable position as heās never seen an example of a healthy marriage and has been abused/witnessed abuse his whole life. He even states himself he just āgot away from the chaos at homeā
There are other observations like the fact she looks much older and mature than him. She is drawn with more defined features while he looks very smooth/round faced and boyish.
And most obviously she tries to have his baby after two months of dating and lashes out in anger when heās reasonably scared + blames him for the loss of her child in the future that wasnāt even his. long after their relationship.
Itās actually sad to read Charles blame himself āand because I am who I amā So imagine the shock when Gail Simone made a post calling them Fun together š
We were shocked because we knew Charles and Sarahās age gap when called out on it Simone claimed he wasnāt underage which we know by now is impossible and could have been an error.
Charles age when he got in collage is pretty well known by writers/fans and has been referenced during the krakoa era as far as Iām concerned. Now you can say that this is just an embarrassing mishap by Simone and the writing team. (Canāt believe a writer is saying sheās looking something about a character up) but Simone has seen not just an age gap referenced before but Charles being called a teen and she didnāt deny it at all.
It would have spoiled nothing to comment about it at the time if she was truly as shocked as sheās acting like she is now then why didnāt she deny it then? Unless she knew all too well and is trying to maybe save face by backtracking? Iāve said it once and Iāll say it again sarah was confirmed to be written as an adult āthey were not underageā and we know and even Gail knows that Charles was a teen but even if this somehow gets retconned sarah being called an abuser isnāt far off the mark. So I wonder what compelled her to backtrack And call them fun?
I want to add I see nothing wrong with writing abusive relationships in comics at all. I was never mad at the retcon itself. Iām not saying that. this wouldnāt be the first time Charles has been written being abused in a relationship and I think itās fascinating to read + write about if done with respect. I mean, Iāve written two entire analysis on his other abusive relationship. So If anything I find it and this relationship interesting because it can add a lot of context to the way Charles acts to his students and how it plays into his abusive childhood and it makes sense that someone whoās so young in collage and only ever knew abuse in his life would be taken advantage of quickly. Iām not saying she canāt write abuse+grooming I donāt care. what I do care about is seemingly knowing you did so and knowing your fans know this and then suddenly backtracking when called out to romanticize it.
Her Uncanny X-men run has already been criticized to death with the previous criticism being pointed towards her mischaracterization of characters and her consistent racist dialogue towards Asian characters both in and outside of her uncanny X-Men run.
Self-explanatory. I can already hear the ābut Deadpool and the juggernaut are supposed to be assholes!ā What about Logan? Heās always respected Japanese culture. Itās a pattern. And Iād still argue Deadpool and juggernaut wouldnāt say this. And I didnāt even include the characters hostile behavior towards her new black character whoās a teenager. Valentin aka ransom.
And of course Iām only criticizing Gail Simone this is no excuse to harass her or anyone even if Iām upset about her seemingly romanticizing abuse and possibly grooming + her disrespect towards non white characters. Sadly this isnāt even just a her issue. Characters of color have been getting treated worse and worse lately abuse has been fetishized and thatās in X-Comics alone much less the rest! itād be unreasonable to paint it as solely a Gail Simone issue. These things are part of massive problems in marvel/DC as a whole.
