One thing I love about Jason Todd is that, when he is at his most angry, his reaction ultimately boils down to ‘fuck you, I can and will do your job better.’

Pissed off at Bruce for the first time? Not only is he attempting to show Bruce that killing can be a good thing, he’s also beating half of his rogue gallery at their own game as a means to an end. Black Mask is fuming and Jason is just like ‘shut up this ain’t about you’

Sometimes, in fandom, we just want to write id-tastic fic that rolls around in tropes that might be viewed as problematic. But we don’t want to address the problematic side of things in this particular fanwork; we just want to roll around and wallow.

It is considered courteous to give readers a heads-up via use of AO3 tags. I propose a tag that signals that a given fanwork is for rolling around, not giving a measured evaluation of anything. The MCU has carved out a space for this sort of fic with the “HYDRA Trash Party” tag, for which I commend them. Trash Party is a bit too specific to cover all of the ground I’m thinking of here, though; I propose “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.”

For those of you not familiar with Arrested Development, Michael Bluth finds a paper bag in the freezer labeled “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.” He opens the bag, finds a dead dove, and reacts as follows:

As someone with virtually no followers, this will affect my reblogs very little, but I always enjoyed going through different chains of reblogs on "Yes, and" type posts and reading the things that communities write together. This pretty much breaks the site for how I use it- primarily for browsing. Idkaf about MY reblog count on those types of posts but people no being able to interact with their communities is a huge issue for me.

What happened? Why has this changed that people don’t reblog stuff??? Genuinely want to know because people are very much using repost/share features on sites like IG and Bsky, but they are doing that less and less here where the site was literally built to function via reposts which we just call reblogs on tumblr.

Like I get that no one owes anyone “engagement” or whatever it’s called these days - but this ain’t about that. It’s about sharing our love for a thing PUBLICLY (dare I say socially) and hoping it’ll find new people to also love it PUBLICLY. (Don’t get me started on my old man yells at cloud speech about fandom being privatized/gate-kept and hidden in discord servers)

Like what happened to unabashedly sharing interests? Putting stuff up on the tumblr fridge (via reblogs) that are basically saying “omg guys look at this amazing thing, I saw it and I wanted everyone else to see it so I’m putting it up on my tumblr fridge for you to see because it’s amazing and I thought you’d like to see it too and hey maybe you can take a copy (reblog from me) and put it on your fridge cuz maybe someone you know that I don’t know will want to see it too”

i was going to add this to my tags rant, but actually i need to say it out loud:

if you privatize your enjoyment of fandom creations, fandom creators are going to start privatizing their creativity.

art will stop being posted. fics will stop being updated. blogs and ao3 accounts will disappear. some of these creatives will just start sending their works to people they know will enjoy them; others will stop creating entirely. and it will be because they got tired of being ignored in favor of secret little discord bookclubs and shunned to the hidden likes section on people's blogs.

the biggest contributors to this toxic fandom culture of apathy and selfishness love to point out that no one is owed engagement. you forget that you are not owed what you now call "content", and you will lose the things you enjoy because you refuse to be kind to the people who are making them available.

It's true you should first and foremost create for yourself and people that enjoy it will rally behind you BUT it's also true if you get like 5 likes you might stop posting that content or content all together because it just feels like a beat down to spend hours on something for people to consume it so quickly and move on with not even a nod your way. I'll say it again: Discords with friends are fun to spread creativity, and share ideas but if you're not sharing the love with the creators you enjoy they might not be there when you finally do come back.

All of this is very true, and I'd like to add: You also need to stop giving people shit for what they reblog.

This is what happened to reblog culture, this is why people don't put stuff up on the Tumblr fridge anymore-- it got scary to do so. I'm serious. Reblog culture died with the rise of fandom antis and cancellation/callout culture; it died when people started getting harassed as "abuse apologists" for reblogging innocuous headcanons from someone who shipped a toxic couple in a different fandom and harassed as "pedophiles" for reblogging art of Zuko and Katara kissing. These are not exaggerations, these are things I SAW HAPPEN. I watched engagement slow to a trickle because it got to the point where people were scared to reblog much of anything because it was impossible to tell what was "safe."

And then 2016 rolled around and the US election brought a ton of alluring drama to Twitter and pulled some of the most dramatic asshats away, and the 2017 porn ban sent most of the rest of the toxic little weirdos to Twitter as well because that's where the entertainment was. But we never fully recovered (partly because a ton of fandom people also left after the ban, understandably) and now this shit is on the rise again. Slowly, yes, but I'm seeing it again. We need to squash it where we see it.

It is all well and good to remind people to reblog things instead of just liking them, but if we want people to ACTUALLY DO THAT, then we have GOT to cultivate an environment where it is safe to be cringe and where "problematic" is understood to refer to real-life bigotry and not your toxic fictional characters. People are not going to say "look at this thing I found that I like!" if they're afraid of getting torn a new asshole about it by some dipshit kid who doesn't understand the difference between actionable desire and the simple lens of memory. People are not going to share their thoughts if they're scared of hearing that their thoughts mean they're a bad evil person who should be drawn and quartered in the square. If you see that shit, speak up in defense. It is not enough to simply not join in; asshole bullies need to know THEY are the weird ones who need to check themselves, or nothing is going to get better around here.

I've slept a collective 6 hours in the last three days and I've taken melatonin for the first time in years and it seems to have no effect on me. And I'm starting to get cramps and I'm at the point where everything is making me weepy and making me overthink things. I need a cuddle and ibuprofen and 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep. But alas! It alludes me. And I need to get up to get my kids to school in about six hours. I know Mythbusters told us to lay down and rest but my feels won't stop :( time for some tea.
