Lee vs Sasuke
I think people really misunderstand the purpose of the fight between Lee and Sasuke. People think it is cool Lee beats up Sasuke. But why? Sasuke was minding his own business and Lee was the aggressor. Lee shows off because he could and would have seriously hurt or could have killed Sasuke if Guy hadn't stepped in and put Lee in his place. All for what? For Lee's pride? So Lee can show off? How is Lee resorting to a finishing move against Sasuke different than Naruto pulling out rasengan or Sasuke chidori? People project Lee's arrogance onto Sasuke and walk away cheering for Lee. But in actuality I think Lee is arrogant and off putting, even if he is also unattractive. And Sasuke is incredibly gracious and proves himself to be the bigger person. What is that saying about how losses reveal your character more than winning does? Sasuke's response and his pure desire to test his own strength was what stood out to me. Seeing how he responded to losing is much more significant than Lee winning.
But I think that's the point. This event foreshadowed how much pressure Sasuke was going to be under throughout the chunin exams. He is carrying the responsibility of representing his entire race, and following their shameful deaths Sasuke has a big target on his back. Sasuke's choice to embrace his family name, rather than distance himself from it (like Kakashi did after his father's shameful death), makes him a target. Everyone now suspects the Uchiha didn't deserve their reputation and they are eager to test that theory out on Sasuke. So I understand why Lee went all out. Lee wasn't trying to defeat Sasuke, he was trying to defeat an Uchiha. Defeating an Uchiha will give him bragging rights. So of course Lee will go all out--he's not sparing with a fellow leaf ninja, he's fighting to disprove his own inferiority. And since he's fighting an Uchiha, Lee can easily imagine that he is"punching up", so it's ok for Lee to go all out. Sasuke's individuality doesn't matter to Lee (nor will it matter to the other participants in the exams). It doesn't matter that he's younger, or an orphan, or that he managed to deal with the sudden catastrophic loss of all his relationships and support systems at age 7, and still graduated on top of his class, which would have been impressive for anyone else. What matters is that Sasuke is wearing the Uchiha insignia.
how quickly would we all end up in prison for arson talking about sasuke if all sasuke URLs had a party in the same building
answer: very quick
sasuke
sasuke is someone who’s been through a lot. he went from being the second son of the uchiha main house, to the last uchiha alive. aside from their murderer, that is.
sasuke woke up one morning as an 8 year old thinking it would be like any other day. the day ended with everyone he has ever known or loved dead. he was left as the sole survivor of a genocide. not only did he have to come home to see all the dead bodies, but he was forced to watch the whole thing happen from start to finish via tsukiyomi, a mangekyo ability that puts the person through 72 hours of psychological torture in the span of seconds. all this by the hands of the person who he loved and admired the most.
and as if that wasn’t enough, he was essentially left alone. completely unattended. sasuke received no support, no treatment, NOTHING after itachi committed genocide “to prevent a war” apparently. and just when he starts reaching out to form new bonds, just when he started getting closer with his team, orochimaru and itachi come along and set him back.
all of sasuke’s suffering and trauma has been reduced to, “oh edgy emo boy haha he’s such a loser 🤣” but of course naruto fans are konoha bootlickers and feel bad for itachi because he committed genocide but not sasuke who suffered the most
“I have seen it. I cannot / forget. Memory is a fact of the soul.”
— Frank Bidart, from Half-light: Collected Poems; “The Second Hour of the Night”
The lengths people (heterosexual people, I'm assuming) will go to in order to avoid accepting that a character could be gay. They legit will be like, "It is SO CRAZY how Naruto is so obsessed with Sasuke. He was more upset about the possibility of Sasuke dying than he was about Jiraiya ACTUALLY dying! It's wild how HAPPY HE IS AROUND SASUKE. Why is that?????????"
It's because they're homos, kid. They're homos.
And here’s a reply
Like, dude, is it so hard to realize that gay people exist? One of them doesn’t have to be genderswapped in order for it to be romantic
I've spent a bit time on the sub at one point and it's very very het - responses and posts there can sometimes borderline on distaste for anything that isn't.
That reply!

Naruto is just actually so fucked up. A 5 year old goes to the park and everyone there is like I want him dead!!!
fanboys will say they hate danzo but then refuse to throw some respect on sasuke's name. like, excuse me, but WHICH of your bootlicker favs would have murdered their government official for the crimes he committed that you say are unforgivable????? which other character in the damn series had the ability, the skill, the motivation, the disregard for his political power to do the damn deed???????? shikamaru??????????? get fucked
This makes me so emotional because the build-up from Land of Waves to Vote1… Sasuke is Naruto’s most precious person. MOST PRECIOUS.
“The sky and sea that does not mix. Their hearts that cannot understand one another. — If you start with these hearts, then this will inevitably be the outcame.” (I remember author note being he tried to make them look like they have a conflict but they do not hate each other)
“Days shared. Emotions shared. But after this encounter, it’s time to part.”
“Divided rivers will once again meet in the ocean…”
“My friend, wait for me! A boy runs through the rain!”
“Those feelings… those wishes… have, without fail… made it our fate to meet once again.”
“Naruto meets with someone close to him… is he smiling at a friend? A date? Who could it be?” (he met Sasuke in this chapter!)
“And so they fought. And so they laughed. Friends. Before they knew it, they were inseparable.” (do I have to even say anything about this legendary cover? all that’s missing is the rainbow flag)
“So close, and yet so far.”
“Two paths… too far apart to be absolute destiny, yet close enough that it can only be fate.” (the corniness, I unironically love it. also look at the ns logo)
“Heaven and Earth, Yin and Yang, polar spirits now cross paths!” (this one looks pretty)
Obviously I didn’t take all of them because too long post is too long. But I just love Naruto and Sasuke covers in the manga. 😭
Naruto, age 7: shit the bills are through the roof this month
naruto, first arc: the shinobi system is exploratory and deeply flawed and profits by literal child soldiers and adults fighting for causes they don’t believe in, they are stripped of their humanity and discarded the moment they aren’t valuable anymore, having their worth measured based on what you can get from them and being treated as mere tools, either working for rich independent people or governments, contributing to maintain the wealthy and powerful wealthier and more powerful, it also exposes these people to traumatic experiences from a very young age
naruto, last arc: haha jk it’s aliens
sasuke and naruto both associate love with pain but naruto treats getting hurt because of love like he should be proud of it and actively seeks it out while sasuke sees it as a side effect… either way the pain is inevitable and sasuke runs from it because he’s felt love from his family and then the overwhelming pain from losing it but naruto has never been given love and care without having to suffer for it so he is constantly trying to prove himself and the value of both himself and his love. anyway.
It's absolutely hypocritical bullshit that Shikamaru is allowed to take his revenge on Hidan because Hidan killed his TEACHER and that is viewed as okay because he lets his friends from Konoha help him (even though he basically straight up told Tsunade he was going to do it anyway when she discovered him sneaking out), but Sasuke is villainized for trying to avenge his MOTHER AND FATHER and ENTIRE CLAN who were killed by his brother in a (revealed later) orchestrated genocide. It's also absolute hypocritical bullshit that people in the fandom laud Shikamaru for killing Hidan and view it as being "cool", but say Sasuke is "emo" and a piece of shit because he wants to get justice for his family his own way and, once he learns the truth, wants to hold a fascist government responsible for their LITERAL crimes against humanity.
