You know what I think is really cool about language (English in this case)? It’s the way you can express “I don’t know” without opening your mouth. All you have to do is hum a low note, a high note, then another lower note. The same goes for yes and no. Does anyone know what this is called?

A lot of people ask me what my biggest fear is, or what scares me most. And I know they expect an answer like heights, or closed spaces, or people dressed like animals, but how do I tell them that when I was 17 I took a class called Relationships For Life and I learned that most people fall out of love for the same reasons they fell in it. That their lover’s once endearing stubbornness has now become refusal to compromise and their one track mind is now immaturity and their bad habits that you once adored is now money down the drain. Their spontaneity becomes reckless and irresponsible and their feet up on your dash is no longer sexy, just another distraction in your busy life. Nothing saddens and scares me like the thought that I can become ugly to someone who once thought all the stars were in my eyes.

I never expected this to be my most popular poem out of the hundreds I’ve written. I was extremely bitter and sad when I wrote this and I left out the most beautiful part of that class.

After my teacher introduced us to this theory, she asked us, “is love a feeling? Or is it a choice?” We were all a bunch of teenagers. Naturally we said it was a feeling. She said that if we clung to that belief, we’d never have a lasting relationship of any sort.

She made us interview a dozen adults who were or had been married and we asked them about their marriages and why it lasted or why it failed. At the end, I asked every single person if love was an emotion or a choice.

Everybody said that it was a choice. It was a conscious commitment. It was something you choose to make work every day with a person who has chosen the same thing. They all said that at one point in their marriage, the “feeling of love” had vanished or faded and they weren’t happy. They said feelings are always changing and you cannot build something that will last on such a shaky foundation.

The married ones said that when things were bad, they chose to open the communication, chose to identify what broke and how to fix it, and chose to recreate something worth falling in love with.

The divorced ones said they chose to walk away.

Ever since that class, since that project, I never looked at relationships the same way. I understood why arranged marriages were successful. I discovered the difference in feelings and commitments. I’ve never gone for the person who makes my heart flutter or my head spin. I’ve chosen the people who were committed to choosing me, dedicated to finding something to adore even on the ugliest days.

I no longer fear the day someone who swore I was their universe can no longer see the stars in my eyes as long as they still choose to look until they find them again.

The worst trick a childhood anxiety disorder pulls is, you spend your early years being applauded for being so much more mature than your peers, because you aren’t disruptive, you don’t want any kind of attention, you don’t express yourself, you keep yourself to yourself - this makes you a pleasure to have in class, etc etc - and you start to believe it’s virtue. SIDENOTE HERE BECAUSE HOLY SHIT.  They did an experiment where these guys wore masks and some of them fucked with crows.  Pretty soon the crows recognized the masks = douchebag.  But the nice guys with masks they left alone.  THEN, OH WE’RE NOT DONE, NO SIR crows that WEREN’T EVEN IN THE EXPERIMENT AND NEVER SAW THE MASK BEFORE knew about mask-dudes and attacked them on sight.  THEY PASSED ON THE FUCKING INFORMATION TO THEIR CROW BUDDIES.

They remember places where crows were killed by farmers and change their migration patterns.

I love crows so damn much. When I was fifteen, I hit a pretty serious bout of depression, to the point I was in my room for months. Well, a family of crows made a nest in a tree outside my window. There were two parents and two chicks. One chick was healthy and strong. One was weak, and had a caw like something being strained. It sounded more like a rooster crowing and so my parents jokingly named him ‘Buck’.Well… months passed and Buck’s sibling was taught to fly. His parents focused on the sibling because the sibling was strong. The father stayed behind to try and teach Buck, but I saw him try to fly, fail, and crash to the floor. His father helped him back up into the tree.

Every day, I would watch Buck from my window until one day I opened it and started talking to him. He was small and gangly and he couldn’t caw right. His feathers were all over the place and I felt a kinship. So I made a deal with him. I told him that if he could do it, if he could fly, then I could find the strength to get up. Well… near the end of the season, after talking with him every day, I finally saw him get out of the nest. He went to the edge of his branch, braced himself, and jumped… and just before he hit the ground, he soared back up into the sky. I cheered harder than I ever had before.

That winter, Buck left the area. I was crestfallen. I felt like I’d lost a friend. But I was so damn proud of him. 

Cut to the next spring? I’m walking up the driveway one day when suddenly I hear a sound… a broken caw. I look up, and Buck is sitting in a tree above my head. He stared at me and puffed his feathers, then hopped down in front of me and cawed again. I was so damn thrilled, and I told him how proud I was of him. He ruffled his feathers and then soared off into his old tree. 

That summer? I heard two broken caws. One from Buck… and one from his chick.

Cut to ten years later? We have a family of crows who all have a very distinct caw and they come here and spend every spring, summer, and fall on our property. Buck still greets me every spring.

this one morning i kept hearing really loud caws, i remember it was like 5am, LIKE REALLY LOUD AND ANNOYING AND AGGRESSIVE, so loud that i could hear it through a closed window, and i eventually went outside to check it out. there was a crow on my front lawn, it had an injury on its head and couldn’t fly and there were two other crows circling right above it, and they were cawing like mad. 

i tried to get close and take a better look and one of them dived super low and tried to attack me. so i went back in the house and chopped some sliced raw meat and tossed it at him from a distance.

a few more times later, very soon after, they could tell i was trying to help, and did not attack me. i was “allowed” to walk up close and pick him up, he couldn’t drink water properly so i had to dip my finger in a bowl and stick it in his mouth.

i did this few times a day and it went on for about a week before he disappeared, i thought he recovered and left, but he came back the next day and lands on me, and i see him around the block quite often, and he would come sit on my shoulder for a few minutes and then fly away again. i feel like i’ve adopted a son.

my thoughts on confidence

confidence is something that we all vie for; we see people that are fearless, that don’t have self doubt - and we envy it. but i don’t think most people understand how difficult and how much time it takes to develop stable confidence. but here are tips, from a psychological, emotional and physical perspective on how to gain confidence based on my own experiences and opinions.

stop limiting confidence to loving yourself. of course, loving yourself is apart of confidence, but it isn’t the whole picture. confidence is conveying ideas, being able to have a consistent conversation without averting eye contact because you’re embarrassed. don’t think of confidence as ‘how can i learn to love myself?’ and more ‘how can i know myself and trust that my values and opinions matter?’ 

learn about how your emotions work. learning about your reactions physically and emotionally to situations not only helps you from being overwhelmed by future circumstances, but also helps psychologically. its called emotional awareness where you understand that emotions come and go and come in various forms. when you feel that you aren’t good enough, you know that this is only a temporary feeling and you dont let it damage your psyche.

notice your achievements. pride yourself on your strengths. teach others on topics you know well. stop thinking about your weaknesses and decide to make them strengths. work on what you aren’t happy with and use what you’re great at your advantage.

health. confidence is in your mind. your mind needs fuel; think about your body as a car, you can’t just expect to pour oil into the car and expect it to still drive. you need fuel. fuel your body with good foods and sleep regularly for at least 8 hours and maintain hygiene. confidence means working hard and it is hard, but health is the most important thing in the world, okay? do it for yourself.

fake it until you make it. you’ve probably heard of this and think its bullshit, but its so important. tricking yourself and others into thinking your confident eventually tricks your own brain the same way and you begin to believe your projected confidence. how to fake it until you make it:

learn power poses: instead of curling in on yourself and hunching your back, walk with your shoulders poised and walk with purpose. walk like you’re the main fucking bitch. because, you are. stand with hands on your hips or put your hands behind your head like a jackass. people will think you have your life sorted.

make eye contact: eye contact is so sososoos osos important because if you’re talking to someone and looking at a distant point in the corner of the room, they will be uncomfortable. make eye contact. show them that you’re listening and attentive.

use your hands: standing with your hands fiddling with one another isnt convincing. convey what you’re trying to say with hand motions and gestures.

walk around naked: not only do you begin to feel comfortable in your own skin, but it has a lot of health benefits!!!!!!!! look in the mirror when you’re naked and point out what you don’t like about yourself, and think of each ‘flaw’ as something good. like a roll of fat on your stomach is actually cute as hell or that scar is actually a point of your life that is now etched into your skin. your body is a story. your body is the only thing you will have. embrace it. stop fucking hiding yourself. love who you are.
