there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.
short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.
meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.
Writer's affirmations:
no one is disappointed in you for not writing today
sometimes wips need to breathe a little
you will figure out how to write this scene
just because words aren't working now doesnt mean they won't forever
AO3 Writer Affirmations:
I do not have to reinvent the wheel every time I write fanfiction
I do not have to make every chapter's word count above 1,000 in order for it to be good
It is okay if some things don't make sense
I can write whatever I want
I am writing this shit for free
If people don't like my stuff, they can block me. If they're being mean about it, I can block them.
The most important part of writing fanfiction is having fun
Writing fanfiction is supposed to be fun
I do not have to appeal to people
This shit is fun
I am doing this all for free, and anyone who objects can go eat wet sand and worms from the sidewalk
Writers should NOT feel guilty about:
Skipping a day of writing.
Not having a perfect first draft.
Partaking in sinister, arcane rituals for inspiration.
Working at their own pace.
Enlisting demons and/or helpful spirits to aid them with editing.
i believe an important kind of creative process is "i didn't know that wasn't allowed"
me (crazy eyes, covered in blood): I NEED to finish writing my fanfic. so I can start writing a different fanfic.
finding an error in someone else's fic: awe. we are all human - this is totally understandable and doesn't bother me whatsoever. it is almost endearing to know that others are not perfect, and in their excitement to share, they made a small mistake.
finding an error in your own fic: a merciful death is too kind for me. i deserve to be burnt on a pyre or publicly executed at dawn
Someone commented that they loved a line
They quoted the line
The line had a typo
This is the fastest way to kill an author
OKAY I'm curious
where do you write your fics
ellipsus
google docs
directly in the AO3 editor
notes app
physical paper
literally wherever I can (sticky notes, your hand, scrap paper, etc)
something else (tell me in tags or comments !!)
not a fic writer but I wanna press a button too !!!
would appreciate reblogs for sample size ::]
the author’s barely disguised love, joy and passion that they have for the characters, writing and their stories
I think your fanfic is amazing.
“But Professor, the technical flaws!” “But Professor, the grammatical errors!” “But Professor, you’re not even in my fandom!” “But Professor, you’ve never even read my fanfic!”
I’ll say it again; I think your fanfic is amazing.
i like the phrases "it's not for me," "it's not my thing," and "i'm not the target audience" because they're the most concise way to express "this thing that you enjoy has merits but idgaf about it" without being aggressive
haha dude that was an excellent knight kink post. you know you don't have to be useful to be worthy of love, right?
being a writer is fun
the author’s thinly veiled nothing #notwriting #straightupnotwritingit
