Can't believe I'm saying this but the weather is slowly changing in Gaza again and it rained quite heavily this week. Knowing this while literally 90% of Gaza's population has been displaced, many living in makeshift tents, is a terrifying thought. Since last week's rain, many people are left without a place to stay and their belongings destroyed by the rain.
The cost of tents is between $700 and $800 which is beyond practically everyone in Gaza right now. However, the Sameer Project are crowdfunding and providing these families with tents. You can help out by either donating and/or sharing their initiative with your friends and community members.
maybe i'm stepping out of line here but a cis algerian woman being called a "biological male" to slander her in post is just as much racism as it is transmisogyny. a lot of transmisogynistic rhetoric is in fact, misogynoir in a new shirt
is it true that it invokes the specter of a grotesque mockery of "real womanhood" by being too masculine? yes. except "real womanhood" here means whiteness. women of color are always by default degendered in a similar way that transfeminine people are. it's not transmisogyny hitting the wrong target, it's the same racism we've always faced the whole time. we are denied the status of "woman" when it would benefit us because we are physically deemed unfit for it by RACE. it does not fundamentally matter if she really does have an abnormal karyotype or not because a white cis intersex woman would not have been discussed this way (i'm saying this as an intersex POC)
yeah man no such thing as thought crime. however you know that a thought is an inside action? your mouth and hands cannot be moving for it to be a thought
people got mad at me for this post where i simply state that your hands and mouth cannot be moving for your thought to be a thought. a thought ceases to be a thought once you start posting it online and telling people this is a principle you believe in. because then those are your values. if i start posting about how i find my tv hot every day and how i want to marry my tv and have sex with my tv then people will think i want to marry my tv because these are the words coming out of my mouth. i don't even want to marry my tv she may be a sweet lover but she is a cruel mistress
being unemployed is rad but being unemployed in a world that treats employment as a necessity that completes you as a person while also having zero access to unemployment benefits is maybe not so good
It's funny how we watched younger generations' attitudes towards work shift so rapidly over the last few years, when everyone started realizing with low pay and high COL and no pensions or benefits, the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze, that literally every media outlet started pushing articles on why job hopping and quiet quitting (i.e. doing your job and going home) is bad, and how the push for RTO is good, actually, and we were having none of it because billionaires were buying megayachts and private jets while we were getting evicted from our homes with skyrocketing rents.
It's a weird dichotomy where society insists you have to work to eat, but you bust your ass over a grill 40+ hours a week and you can't afford the food you cook, and meanwhile some CEOs are gutting Sears and Toys R Us and Red Lobster and getting rewarded millions for destroying perfectly functional businesses. This is what the world considers valuable work? You'll forgive me if I'm skeptical of the whole arrangement.
I think what's really funny about people being like "TWITTER is not a news source lol, you losers are so stupid and get your news from social media" type of people is that multiple news sources link reporters' twitters and other social media directly.
You can criticize the algorithm about how at times it curates stories that are supposed to generate outrage, sure, but a blanket statement of "oh you IDIOTS don't read the REAL news, unlike me, the enlightened person who is knocking sense into you btw don't believe everything you see on the internet" for literally everything if it doesn't align with your worldview is just plain annoying.
Also like, as if news sources aren't also commercial industries intent to generate outrage so that you can read their articles and generate revenue..... lmao.
"someone who really has pOCD would be disgusted and horrified at their intrusive thoughts" or maybe i'm in therapy & am going by the books, being radically ambivalent to my intrusive thoughts instead of wasting energy mentally washing my paws of sin. i'm not going to perform my rock bottom for you for the sake of being believed.
This goes for all types of disability actually. Sorry if you don't think I act like I'm in enough pain to be disabled by chronic pain. But I'm not going off my meds that help control it just so you can properly sympathize with me.
Genuine friendly summer reminder for my fellow fat people.
We have more body than skinny people so we also contain more water and therefore need to drink more. 2 Litres is something skinny people need to drink we need more. I aim for 4 litres a day.
While any waterbased liquid is good try to not drink all 4 litres in coke or soda. I absolutley do recommend sport drinks or similar things. Fat people like us, or at least me, sweat a lot in this heat even without sport. Refill those electrolytes. Your body will thank you.
My go to drink at home is a 2 litre jug of water with just enough store bought raspberry or orange syrup that it has a taste thats not water.
Please stay hydrated in this heat and take care of your body. Its the only one you have.
(If you clown on fat people in tags/replies/comments I will hunt you for sport)
If you want to add flavour to your water, fill some ice cube trays with fruit juice. Pop in a few cubes into your water bottle. It's like putting in lemon or orange wedges, without taking up space with non-liquids.
since people are talking about Imane Khelif, some reminders for discussing intersex issues:
"Disorders of sex development" or "DSD" is an intersexist term that contributes to medical violence and social alienation. The correct word is "intersex," a neutral term for the characteristics that the term "DSD" others and pathologizes.
You can be intersex and cis. You can be intersex and trans. A lot of intersex people have more complicated relationships to those concepts/terms. Being cis or trans doesn't make someone more or less intersex.
Gender testing in women's sports is both transmisogynistic and intersexist. In practice it usually impacts intersex cis women because trans women are already disqualified by their social histories. Intersex cis athletes subjected to abuse and discrimination due to gender testing results are victims of intersexism, not "misdirected" or "mistaken" transmisogyny. Intersexism, transmisogyny, and misogynoir all overlap in many ways due to the intertwined histories of sex, gender, and race categories.
"Proof" that an intersex cis woman is not a trans woman (i.e. that she was AFAB'd) will not stop TERFs from attacking her, because TERFs also do not view intersex cis women as real women (case in point).
No one's private medical info should be reported on the news, but when an athlete is outed as intersex in this way, trying to defend their honor by claiming they're not really intersex only reinforces intersexism.
Arguing over what kind of intersex variation someone has (e.g. hormonal vs. chromosomal) and whether it "counts" is intersexist and also weird. Leave us alone!
anyway, congrats to Imane on her win, it's not her fault Angela Carini is a bigoted crybaby coward
Amazon cracks down on Teamstersâ union efforts, labor leaders detained - WashingtonPost
Seven union activists with the Teamsters were handcuffed, detained and criminally charged while protesting outside an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island last month, as tensions between the e-commerce giant and the powerful union escalate.
Video footage of the July 17 protest obtained by The Washington Post shows New York Police Department officers rounding up and restraining union leaders â including Teamsters officials and local warehouse union activists â after warning them they would be âsubject to arrest,â for remaining on âAmazon property,â amid a crowd of protesters.
The Teamsters say the incident took place on public land outside the warehouse, where police have informed workers they can safely protest. An NYPD officer says in a video that the protesters were on Amazonâs property. But NYPD officials told The Post they could not provide details about the incident because there was no police report.[...]

"Women only" and "Man free" spaces tend to have a lot of normalized abuse because they view abuse as based on identity and not as a pattern of behaviors that any person can exhibit
This was made about a "uplifting womens" group I used to go to with my mom until her agoraphobia got so bad she couldn't keep going ~2017, It was pretty much a monthly brunch to make connections with other women in the area and advertised itself as being about supporting other girls, and man free to better "support victims of abuse" anyway I turned out the organizer (a rich white woman) had been using the space to get lower income women in the group to do babysitting for her at below minimum wage (with other housework expected as well) to be "good allies to working women" and claiming she was "uplifting" these women by giving them work. The group recently disbanded because of this.
Researchers Found Even Lower-Performing Masks Were Protective
Published May 31, 2024
Any common face mask provides significant protection against the virus that causes COVID-19, but N95 masks are most effective at slashing the amount emitted by infected people, according to a University of Maryland-led study released Wednesday.
So-called âduckbillâ N95 masks scored highest in the study, which measured the exhaled breath of participants who were tested both masked and unmasked to measure comparative outputs of SARS-CoV-2. The inexpensive masks, which have two head straps and a horizontal seam, captured 98% of exhaled virus, according to the study published in eBioMedicine.
The researchers also found thatâin what might come as a surprise to manyâcloth masks outperformed the specific brand of KN95 mask that was tested. Surgical masks brought up the rear in performance out of the four types, but even they blocked 70% of the virus, the tests showed. (To reflect the general public's use of masks, study volunteers were not fit-tested for their masks or trained how to properly wear them.)
âThe research shows that any mask is much better than no mask, and an N95 is significantly better than the other options. Thatâs the No. 1 message,â says the studyâs senior author, Donald Milton, a professor of environmental health and a global expert on how viruses spread through the air.
The article above didn't link to the study, so I found it, and it's open access!

that article going around abt firefox's new ad program is annoying bc it's phrased as though "mozilla has finally TURNED on its people and is SELLING YOU OUT for cold hard cash!!" when. that's not what's happening. it is specifically being implemented to discourage tracking behavior, and literally all the data they are giving to advertisers is aggregate and anonymized, which is like, the opposite of what that post wants you to worry about, lol
summary for those lacking energy/means to read the linked page:
firefox has very strong anti-tracking protections
advertisers keep trying to find ways around those protections
instead of wasting time and resources fighting all the ways these problems pop up, firefox is trying to remove the need for advertisers to track you at all
if you have this setting on, and you click on an ad (it's only when you click on an ad and interact with the ad's website - it's not counting misclicks), firefox will make a note of it (this is only stored in your browser, firefox is not selling this part)
firefox then encrypts all that data so it can't be traced back to you, before sending those notes to people who count them up
the advertisers will then periodically receive a report that says "hey, x amount of people clicked on your ad in this time frame. you can use this data to decide if this is the right place to put your ad"
hopefully this will get the advertisers the information they want without having to tell them anything about your specific browser history
if this still makes you uncomfortable, the way to opt out is very easy (go to settings -> privacy and security -> web advertising preferences, and uncheck all the boxes)
firefox is out here fighting the good fight guys. they're the only browser that even slightly manages to stand up to chromium, but it's a losing battle - spreading misinfo is just trying to sink the ship

No private prison corporation has faced any meaningful consequence as million-dollar contracts have been doled out to the same facilities wh
Nearly all of the deaths in U.S. immigration detention facilities over a five-year period were preventable, but no officials have faced serious accountability, a new report found.
Of the 52 people who died in detention under the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from January 2017 to December 2021, 49 of the deaths, or 95%, were preventable or possibly preventable if appropriate medical care had been provided. The new report, âDeadly Failures: Preventable Deaths in U.S. Immigration Detention,â reviewed more than 14,500 pages of documents published by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Physicians for Human Rights, and American Oversight on June 25.
None of the private prison corporationsâwhich currently hold more than 90% of the detainees under ICE custodyâhave faced meaningful consequences as million-dollar contracts have been doled out to the same facilities where preventable deaths have occurred, the report showed.
âIt is a system thatâs rotten to the core,â said Eunice Hyunhye Cho, senior attorney at ACLUâs National Prison Project and lead co-author of the report. âFrom bottom to top, you see some very minimal slaps on the wrists and blaming of the lowest level employees, but thereâs really no true accountability regarding the disaster of the medical care system in ICEâs detention facilities,â she said.
After deaths in detention, ICE failed to conduct rigorous investigationsâfailing to interview key witnesses, omitting key inculpatory facts, and allowing evidence to be destroyed, the report stated. ICE also withheld information from the relatives of the deceased. To obtain the medical record of a loved one, a family has to take ICE to court and litigate for years to receive often incomplete files.
âIt is a system of impunity and lack of transparency as ICE and private corporations are working hand in hand in perpetuating dangerous and deadly conditions,â Cho said.
Amid medical neglect, cruelty, and abuse, more than 38,000 immigrants are held each day in an ICE network of some 190 detention facilities across the country, as of June 16. That number will only increase as Congress approved a record annual budget for ICE to detain 41,500 people daily at a cost of $3.4 billion this year. Most of the detention budget will go to the private prison companiesâThe Geo Group and CoreCivic being the largestâwhere most preventable deaths occur.
âThe answer that we see over and over again to the failures that produce deaths is to give the detention system more money,â said Andrew Free, an attorney involved in more than 30 cases of deaths in ICE custody and contributor to the report. âThatâs been the response at all levels of the system. Itâs not just one facility. Itâs not just one contractor. Itâs not just one fiscal year,â he said.
