*through gritted teeth* the world is GOOD. people are kind. Humans are NOT inheritly selfish. you will make it through this year. recovery is possible. people you don't know yet will love you. You are going to do things you can't even imagine right now. You are going to read a rlly good book. You are going to eat some rlly good food. You are going to experience joy again. Things can get better. Situations can change. You can choose to be kinder. The world can change for the better.
Heartwarming story: Little girl doesn’t have to do anything to fund her dad’s surgery because his expenses are covered by his country’s universal healthcare.
Human determination: Man bikes 18 miles to work every morning because he wants to and not because he can’t afford a car and would be fired if he’s late.
Spirit of Brotherhood: Neighbors host housewarming party for elderly resident who doesn’t need help in paying rent because his pension is more than enough.
SO INSPIRING: Local middle school students bake dozens of cupcakes because their home economics class is doing a baking unit. Their school is fully funded with everything they need.
This feels like calibrating my normal detector
Fantasy Is A Metaphor For The Human Condition, a comic about magic, and art, and speculative fiction, and being sick, and how they all intersect. Originally laid out/pencilled November-December 2017, when I was in a very difficult place emotionally as I was relearning how to draw post-brain injury.

This made me tear up in public
“If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day; if you teach a man to fish, he will eat for a lifetime,” but you have done neither. You have stood before us and eaten fish after fish, and chided us for our greed as you have done so. You have cast aside their offal and simultaneously chided us for our waste. You then told us that, coincidentally, you owned the river, and our parents should have gotten us the same if we wanted fish. You gave a man a fish to murder us if we step too close to the river, or speak too loud, or eat a fish from another river. You’ve copyrighted the fishing net. It costs us fish to leave.
Hey, are you reading anything interesting these days? I’m looking for a new book and I thought you’d have good taste :)
I love your work!
Hope you’re having a good day :)
Hm, well, I picked up a comic called Sobek by James Stokoe on a trip to London recently. It's one-shot, single issue, but the artwork is ASTONISHINGLY gorgeous and absolutely worth experiencing. Guy renders volume and expression like nobody's business.
I've been reading A Brief History of Khublai Khan by Jonathan Clements, who's a very engaging history writer (his A Brief History of the Samurai is endlessly readable), and I'm slowly working my way through Edward Said's seminal Orientalism, which is one of the definitive studies in the meaning of that term.
Emily Wilson's translation of the Odyssey is pretty good (although I understand other classicists take some issue with her translation choices) if you want to re-experience that story, and Birth of an Industry by Nicholas Sammond is a really solid history of the animation industry, especially paying attention to the connection between minstrel shows and American race relations and the history of animation.
Play Nice: The Rise, Fall and Future of Blizzard Entertainment by Jason Schrier is a great bit of reporting on the history of Blizzard and why it has turned out the way it did.
Michelle Mary Lelwica's Shameful Bodies: Religion and the Culture of Physical Improvement is a book about the deep and intractable ties between religious conservatism and fitness- and diet-culture.
And of course, there's probably never a time in my life when I'm not re-reading something by Terry Pratchett. Most recently I chewed my way through Small Gods, but if you've never read his Discworld series, my strongest recommendation is to start with either Mort or Monstrous Regiment.
I don't know if bookmarking posts is a thing so just reblogging this to check later
Somehow, June was ever fucking worse than May. Between Memorial Day and health struggles, almost every paycheck this month was short. While the health stuff is being managed, my finances continue to crater and when you are living paycheck to paycheck on minimum wage, any stumble feels like a catastrophe. I am coming up just over 300 short of making my rent after next week's paycheck and then almost another hundred more for my car insurance and my emergency resources have been draining faster than they are filling. . .
I hate having to ask this again but I need help. Nobody is obligated to give anything but I greatly appreciate anything anyone is willing to give to help me hold things together. I am still super grateful for the help I got before and am so sorry for having to ask again. If you can help, please and thank you. Hopefully I can hold things together and July shows mercy and gives me the reprieve I need to get back to stable but until then any help is appreciated beyond words, even just boosting this post so it finds eyesore anyone who could help. Things are very difficult for everyone and I hope someone hears my cry for help.

the first time i posted this a lot of people were like "fucking in parks was out of left field but I agree with everything else" despite this being the "gay people website" and like. i just wanted to be like "do you know literally anything about your gay history? what do you think comes from criminalizing the act of having sex in public, like in a park? do you think those policies might unduly target particular vulnerable demographics? do you think that these policies might be used maliciously and selectively to sweep the streets of 'undesireables'? doe you understand that this is violently reactionary?" but these suburbanites turn their ears off and start shouting about Consent.
like im sorry but you are not being raped by seeing someone in public have consensual sex and you are not being raped by being exposed to weed smoke at a concert and you are not being raped by "having" to see a homeless person on the train talking to themselves or rolling a blunt or whatever. a violently parochial people who are used to living in castle-fortresses indeed.
also this shouldn't have to be said but like. you have so much more in common with the homeless person shooting up on the train than you do with the overlords who have determined that she is not a human being. and you have an infinitely higher chance of becoming her than you do have of becoming one of the overlords who define the policies that seek to eradicate her. and many, many people refuse to acknowledge that the reason they find seeing people like her so repulsive is because it is a displaced and repressed understanding of the reality that they could become her at any moment. what separates you from the homeless woman who hasn't been given access to a shower in several weeks? is it something spiritual and intrinsic to you, which makes you a better person than her, someone more pure and chosen by God, a kind of mode of existence which justifies her state because she must have done something to deserve this? or is it something far more frightening: that you have just been lucky enough to not have been forced to become her? That you have been afforded protective privileges by the powers that be, which stop you from suffering her fate? These privileges can be rescinded in a moment. The homeless woman is the same kind of human being as you, simply unluckier. It is seriously critical to understand that all of the people around you are human beings just like you are.
happy gay month everyone!

One of the stranger things about training brand new nurses is explaining how to min max small talk. It feels very weird to coach people on how to chat.
if I make and post an insanely detailed powerpoint on the twenty different equations I run mentally during casual conversation to make it flow better, everyone has to say that it's sexy and cool and not weird at all
remember, everyone promised to be cool! also disclaimer disclaimer disclaimer assume I said all the things you'd say to be like "i know human interaction is complicated, i know some of what i listed here would be very annoying to some people," and all that
Took me until about halfway through college before I realized “study” means “play with the material in a variety of ways until you understand it” and not just “read the assigned chapters and do the homework” and I think that probably should have been discussed at some point prior to that.
@Geoastrocat
the real danger of spending too much time with friends is you stumble out of ten days of happiness and good food like oh my god THAT was real life. my job means NOTHING
yeah it makes life worthwhile. i hope you get to hang out with a bunch of people you really like for several days in a row some time soon!
