[just wanna throw this out there! if any of yall ever see someone using or reposting your art or someone else’s art without permission/crediting the original artist, and they won’t listen to you when you ask them to take down the stolen art, this is what you should do!
If it’s YOUR art being stolen and you posted it to Tumblr:
1. If it’s just on a singular post, you can just report that post, or if there are multiple you can report the entire blog. Click the paper airplane icon under the post and one of the options should be to report it, or to report the whole blog, click the little icon at the top of their blog that looks like a portrait silhouette.
2.Click “report something else.” This will bring up the full menu of stuff to report.
3.Click either “misattribution violation” or “copyright violation”. These will pretty much lead you to the same form.
4. Click “I posted it to Tumblr”, then when it asks if the work is yours, click “Yes”, then click “I posted it to Tumblr” again, then finally “Someone reposted it instead of reblogging it”. This will bring up the form to report stolen content.
5. Paste the URL of your original art post into the “original content” box, and the URL of the repost into the “repost” box if you’re just reporting the whole blog. Then you should be able to just send the form and you’re done!
If it’s YOUR art being stolen and you posted it somewhere else besides Tumblr:
Unfortunately, if the artwork wasn’t originally posted to Tumblr, you’ll have to file a DMCA to get it taken down. This can be a little scary for fanart since it’s kind of a legal grey area in and of itself. But just fill out the form and you should be fine.
1. Start with the same steps as above but instead of clicking “I posted it to Tumblr”, click “I posted it somewhere else”. This will bring you to a page with a link to the DMCA form.
2. Fill out the form. You’ll need the URL of the reposted art (if there are multiple posts, you can add multiple URLs) and you should also include the URL of your original post alongside it. You’ll also need to provide your full name, address, phone number, and email address. Don’t worry, this is just part of the legal process. They won’t do anything with this information. Then check the 3 boxes at the bottom, click the captcha, and send it.
If it’s someone ELSE’s art being stolen and you know who the original artist is:
Unfortunately, only the original artist can actually report theft of their own art. So all you can really do is contact the artist whose art you saw get stolen and let them know about it. Link them to the post containing their art and tell them it’s a repost. If you don’t know who the original artist is, try reverse-image-searching on google or asking around to see if anyone else recognizes the art.
Remember, art theft is a huge problem for artists online. It strips the art of its source and makes it a lot harder to trace it back to the original artist, which takes credit and exposure away from that artist. So if you see someone stealing art, you should report it (or find and tell the original artist so THEY can report it), and let the thief know they shouldn’t be posting art that isn’t theirs.]
