Casting popular celebrities as voice actors for animation isn’t a new thing btw people in the 21st century just don’t know the popular actors of the early 1900s and can’t recognise when old cartoon characters are being voiced by the Chris Pratts of their day. I do mean this in a fairly neutral way, but we do have to stop always romanticising every aspect of the past all the damn time as if professional voice actors haven’t always been screwed over by large animation companies. It’s obviously worse now because we’re well into late stage capitalism and things like AI are becoming such a huge threat, but it’s not like… new. Nothing’s ever new, we just keep gaining new generations who have to put in the effort of learning from the past, and most people just don’t do that. So conversations that have already happened have to start all over again.
It's a phenomenon in all art forms for all of history! I recently went to an art museum that had this crazy cool, dramatic, dynamically lit painting depicting the Muse of Tragedy flanked by the personifications of Pity and Terror. It's a very story-based painting, meant to entertain and keep you looking at it for a long time through light cues and hidden details.
But guess what! The model in the center is Sarah Siddons and she was like a super celebrity and people drew and painted her as allllllll kinds of dramatic characters. Some people thought it was tasteless, celebrity trash and uncouth entertainment. But hey! My favorite actor in a super cool painting! Put her in another and another and another. Hehe.
This is so interesting, I love history

i go to the shop and I ask if they have any raspberries. they say no, they used to sell raspberries, but they haven't had any in stock in the last 15 years. I ask if there's somewhere else I can go to buy raspberries. They say no, with confidence and pride, they're the only shop around who has ever sold or will ever sell raspberries. Other shops might sell other fruit, sure, but they have a monopoly on all raspberries forever. I ask if they're possibly planning on them selling them again in future? they say they can't tell me that.
on the way home, I encounter someone eating raspberries. I ask and they tell me that they grow their own, they got some seeds from the shop back in The Raspberry Days and kept them. They take me to a field of many beautiful raspberry plants and invite me to pick my own, they're free for all the town to pick whenever they'd like.
someone comes up behind us. It's the shop manager, President of Nintendo Shuntaro Furukawa. he hatefully throws a bob-omb that blows up and kills both of us instantly for stealing 200 trillion dollars worth of potential Raspberry Shop That Doesn't Do Raspberries Anymore profits that they weren't making and then he turns around to the camera with a big thumbs up and says don't do piracy or something ok please
perhaps some will disagree, but i think the world got worse when we changed the colour of the night
this is what i mean
Via @bulbaderp
To be clear, THIS is how nights of the future should be lit
This is bat friendly street lighting, which not only looks sick as fuck but allows bats to pass through without disturbance, as they cannot see red.
orange and especially white lights deter bats and prevent them from reaching feeding grounds at nighttime. Please if you can, write to your local council and encourage red street lights!!!!
ALSO! red light doesn’t fuck up human night vision much so you can go in and out of lit areas without readjusting
the red light not fucking up human night vision is also why a number of older cars had gauges that lit up red at night
i legit miss red lights in cars and appliances n stuff. red city lighting is goated
I'm still thinking about the guy who saw me realize my wheelchair wouldn't fit in the elevator because he (also a wheelchair user) was already inside it and immediately quipped, "This elevator ain't accessible enough for the both of us."
Wh-what do you mean it’s from a birthday cake
We could have been eating him
I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.
I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.

Kenyan smallholder farmers are reducing post-harvest losses and accessing global export markets through a pay-per-use solar cold storage mod
While the focus is often on transportation and energy generation, about one third to one fourth of global carbon emissions come from our food systems. This means that making these systems more efficient, such as by reducing wasting energy on food that never makes it to market, is a big deal--as well as an important economic factors for farmers.
In regions where grid electricity is unreliable or inaccessibly expensive, the lack of access to reliable refrigeration greatly increases the risk that harvested food will spoil before it can reach market. Farmers also have less agency in when and where to sell their food when they have to rush to sell it before it spoils.
With the plummeting cost of solar, innovative companies are now providing farmers in these regions with rentable solar-powered cold rooms that are not dependent on grid electricity. One company in Nigeria estimates that their services have reduced food spoilage from 50% to around 2% while helping farmers earn more for their produce.
