Wild how we've all had a couple of centuries to chew on it, and Wuthering Heights is still so freaky that people routinely just cannot wrap their minds around it. It's a novel about a romantic relationship -- so it's a romance? It's absolutely not! Although it's entirely about Cathy and Heathcliff, they're in large part absent from the novel, so are they the protagonists? Sorta! Actually they're kind of the inciting incident, and the book is about the impact crater these two fucked up people leave behind after they do whatever it is they're doing, which is kind of conducting a forbidden love affair, but also something different from that? Whatever you think it's about, you're right, but also wrong. It's Weirder Than That. People are obsessed with the book but also it doesn't really exist in the way that most people remember it. This has been going on since 1847, and by "this" I mean audiences failing to match Miss Emily B's freak. The words Unparalleled Media Experience come to mind.

i saw the casting announcement for wuthering heights (2026) before reading the book, and assumed that heathcliff's miscasting was because the character was subtly not white, or it was mentioned here and there without much relevance to the plot beyond subtext, etc. (which still wouldn't have made it ok btw). but now i'm reading it and every single scene with him in it reads like:

'then appeared heathcliff, who was not white. he not-white-ly entered the room, where everyone else was white, unlike him. "aah! a not white!" they all shouted. he cried. "i wish i were white," he said. "don't worry, maybe your non-white parents were rich in non-white countries," said nelly. he was then called ten slurs, because he was not white, and left.'

I have mentioned this multiple times, but I need people to realise how unhinged Louis and Armand's Dubai penthouse is.

EVERYTHING has fucking vertical bars everywhere that make this place look like a literal and figurative prison.

Sometimes it is subtle, sometimes it is absurdly clear, but there are fucking PRISON BARS in their bedroom and I'm not going to shut up about this.

Louis is in horrible depressing loungewear most of the time-- completely bereft of colour and texture and even shape and I hate it. But on the rare occasion he wears something with any pattern, it's more vertical stripes.

This is one of my favourite examples, because not only do we have the prison bars everywhere, but these two men are also wearing stripes-- but they are not matched (Armand striped shirt, Louis striped bottoms). Meaning they are not in this prison together, they are experiencing the prison differently. They are imprisoning each other and themselves.

What is wild is when we step away from the prison stripes, we just get... monastery chic. Cold, hard, harsh, eye-straining blankness. Very little art, no joy, no texture, just... monastery.

It's like they hired a repressed monk who spent 100% of his life from birth to death to do the décor. And when that monk was in his 50s, he left the monastery to be with the other monk he fell in love with, but because he's such a repressed and ridiculous monk, he has no idea how normal bloody houses work because he has never been in one.

These men are fucking BROKEN and they hate each other, they are keeping each other and themselves prisoner-- AND they are taking it out on the décor.

Fucking 77 years of purgatory for them both.

Oh, and I've also said this before, but Louis in the shapeless boring drab loungewear in Dubai? I cannot WAIT to see Louis come out of his clothes coma. The few snippets for S3 have him back in textures and colours and patterns and I'm so so so excited to see him in beautiful things again. I need my Helen of Troy back in her beautiful gowns. NOW.

Yeah okay so every vampire in the vampire chronicles is turned at critical a moment in their lives and beyond just the body they are in when they are turned, their mentality stays at that standstill for their entire immortality, Lestat was turned against his will, he was clinging onto Magnus begging him to be freed, so he’s constantly seeking freedom and only finding loneliness and thus turning back to people again and again, however he can’t STAND being told what to do, since he desires agency in his life so desperately, Armand was turned after years and years of abuse and lack of control but such a desire for genuine love, by a man he ‘loved’ so wholly who he felt was barring his love from him, he needs control in his life, he needs a ‘master’ but he does not desire it, it does not fulfill him, he is trapped in a room but the door is unlocked! Louis was mourning his brother, he felt like an utter failure and so he’s always seeking family, seeking people he can care for, he can coddle, he can prove he is good too, but he loves people who either cannot stand coddeling and need a sense of looseness to live (Lestat) or people who grow out of coddling who prove to Louis he will always fail the people he loves (Claudia), Claudias turning, in many MANY ways mirrors lestats in that it was against her will, she was stolen from her home, and in her immortality she desires freedom but unlike Lestat does not have the agency/ form to get it, she will always be small, she will always be looked down on, even by Lestat who cannot deny how much she is just like him *taps mic* ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME!! NONE OF THEM CAN BREAK THE CYCLE!!! TO BREAK IT WOULD BE TO UNDO THE VERY FIBER OF THEIR IMMORTAL SELVES!! Unless you were a tech at NASA back in the day, when one time some hydrogen a) escaped in a particular building, and b) caught on fire. This was extremely difficult because hydrogen does NOT burn on the visible spectrum humans evolved to see (and flee). Rather, it technically does, but it’s so pale that in practice, no one could see it. Additionally, pure hydrogen burns without smoke and with so little ambient heat that you can’t really sense it till you walk into it. So, per the lore, for a few days all the techs in that building just walked around brandishing brooms in front of them like lances. If your broom lit on fire, congrats! You have located more burning hydrogen! Do not proceed!
