I need to know the views on homosexuality in India circa 400 AD (writing purposes). Now I know Hinduism as a religion doesn't delve into it a lot, but it's not necessary that religious scriptures and actual cultural reality are similar. Are there any records from the time? Do we know anything about actual acceptance?

idk much about it but im assuming it was not seen in a bad light exactly. we do have examples, like Mitra-Varun, Bhagirath's mothers. Also in the Pali canon, bhikkus and bhikkunis have a detailed list of rules what not to do, which also contains different kinds of sexual activities including homosexuality. so im assuming that it was a common thing back then, just forbidden for monks (like other sexual things)

Kamasutra also mentions homosexuality (though this is post the time period u stated). Im not sure if I'm correct on this but i think i read somewhere that it also mentions same-sex marriage.

Arthashastra also has punishments for both hetereo and homosexual relationships (usually for priests/monks or with minors), in which the punishment for homosexuality was less severe than heterosexuality interestingly. @randomx123 is researching a bit on queerness in Indian society so ig he can tell more on this.

In general i think the general consensus in ancient india was indifference towards the sex of your partner. they just didnt care and went about their day as usual.

Ok, I'm not sure how much I'd be helpful since I wasn't exactly looking through it in terms of such specific dates, but afaik, it was seen as a normal thing. Just like heterosexual relationships, do it indoors and you'd be fine, do it in public and it'd be a social misconduct. In case of Brahmins apparently it was taken more seriously, as it was considered to be like them losing their caste. The other such case was if one of the members of the relationship was underage.

I haven't been able to find anything abt any specific rulers who were gay or bi yet, but homosexuality seems to occur in the scriptures often. Mitra-Varuna, as Starry mentioned above. Most of our scriptures' queer subtexts tends to be mainly about gender and sex. Treating homosexuality with neutrality is a good thing imo, as excess highlights would make it seem as if it's out of place in that era.

Besides all this, there are some temples with carvings depicting homosexual and bisexual erotic acts too. I'm not sure if they'd match the time period you're looking for, but I thought it's worth bringing up.

The most popular example is obviously Ravan. His family worshipped a devi but that didn't stop him from a rapist or abductor of women, neither did it stop his family from supporting him.

Another example is Brihaspati, even after being such a revered rishi and lord of a planet it did not stop him from raping his sister-in-law or cursing her unborn child.

There are countless examples of humans — or rather men — in all eras of histories who have worshipped goddesses, and had committed crimes likes sati, rape, violence, murder against women.

So whoever says Hindu men used to respect women because they worship goddesses. No. Not everyone. Misogyny and Patriarchy CAN and DOES co exist with female diety centric worships and rituals.

This hurts Hinduism more than hinduphobes hurt Hinduism. Y'all are just being ignorant to think society was better because worship was better.

Athens is a great example of this. Even while the city's patron goddess was Athena, Athens was one of the most rigidly patriarchal and misogynistic cities in Greece.

I'd like to add in the fact that misogynists don't see Goddesses as regular women. They completely separate the two in their minds. That is why they can be absolute monsters to women, and still puff up their chests and screech "Jai Shri Ram" or "Jai Mata Di", even in a Durga Puja/Navratri pandal

Worshipping Devi isn't the same as respecting the women around you. It's easy to see an unmoving statue of a Goddess and to see an actual living breathing person, and go "Oh, they're two completely separate things". It's harder to get away with showing substandard respect and devotion towards actual people than it is to an idol depicting Devi's form. Too many people don't seem to understand this, probably due to an idealistic view of the world.

Honestly, the first such case in our myths is that of Daksha, who failed to see his daughter as Mahamaya. He prayed to Her to be born as his daughter, but then tried to make Sati act as being entirely different from Mahamaya.

Ravan's whole family was well-versed in Devi's sadhana, particularly Her ugra forms like Nikumbala or Bhadrakali/Jogadya. Yet, Ravan raped Rambha, tried to kidnap Vedavati, kidnapped Sita and only stopped himself from assaulting Her as well due to his curse. Meghnad forcefully married Sulochana, Shesha's daughter who vowed to kill him for it.

It's really tiring to see people so obviously from non-Shakta regions make such sweeping claims about worshippers of Devi. Such matters require a level of nuance during discussion, which is gained by living experience. There's a reason Shri Ram is called Maryada Purushottam, and not considered just a generic well-behaved man. Him and Ravan are polar opposites in terms of how they approach Devi.

I suppose one can say that these things are forbidden in our shastras, unlike certain other faiths that actively encourage such behaviour. However, that only makes things worse, since it shows how Hindus are so against what actually makes them Hindus. Mocking others will do no good if our own people are no different.

Even now, BJP has actual rapists in their midst, while spouting Savarkar's mangled dated ideas of Hindutva. Neither of which aligns with Hinduism proper, if anyone was wondering

Astrology keeps planets divided between masculine, feminine and neutral. it has nothing to do with tattvas. Chandra is feminine due to various reasons, one of which is that it's considered to embody the divine feminine. And Surya and Chandra both are sattva guna planets, though Shukra is rajas guna.

idk about other sects, but Lakshmi and Brahma are considered siblings since they came out of Mahalakshmi in a pair, in shaktism. same with the other 2 pairs. plus all of these sibling pairs have the same tattva.

Surya is called Suryanarayan in my culture. Lakshmi is called Patal nivasini. Logically it makes sense, because all the gems and metals come from deep under the earth. She took birth as Pulomi/Shachi. And yes Lakshmi and Brahma are siblings. And they're in those other lives as well. Like Vishnu and Shakti being siblings in their lives. Shanta (Ram's older sister) was also said to be Shakti. Yashoda's daughter, who was replaced with Krishna, is also a form of Shakti. I know very little of Maa Saraswati's forms/avatars.

Additionally, Chandra nakshatras are - Rohini (eyes, vision), Hasta(hands, create) and Shravan(ears, sound). Rohini's deity is Brahma himself. And Chandra is exalted in Rohini. Is that not Brahma energy? Venus in western astrology is seen as feminine, and is a roman counterpart of Lakshmi. Hope that explains?

Disagree with you on this. I assume this was just a light hearted content.

But we have so many vegetarian dishes from Awadh, that focusing on only the non veg dishes that actually came into existence because of the nawabs of awadh/lucknow is injustice to our actual Awadhi heritage and culture. Mughal/Nawabi culture has taken over our Hindu Awadhi culture. As an Awadhi, this is my opinion.

I agree that Awadhi cuisine has so many vegetarian dishes, and it's perfectly fine to highlight that. I'm assuming that local Awadhi/UP cuisine (excluding Nawabi cuisine) also has non vegetarian dishes which couldve been highlighted as well, along with the vegetarian ones. I find it weird and slightly funny that there was not a single non vegetarian dish included.
