First off how have I not talked about this show before on this blog. Before I watched Stranger Things I only knew that there were a couple of kids in it, or that the show revolved around them. It wasn't until I was on Pinterest one day and saw that this show took place in the 1980's, my personal favorite decade. That is when my want to watch the show began, and I envied everyone that ever watched it.
It wasn't until Christmas when I was finally able to watch the show on Netflix, since I was over at my cousin's house. Stranger Things is a show that we can watch all in one day, but can still put us through an emotional roller coaster. From the soundtrack to the character development, this is a TV Show that almost anyone can at least appreciate. First off, the title sequence. The visual effects make it look like it’s advanced for something from the 80′s, yet it still looks like it was made during the 1980′s; the theme song accounts for the same thing, the tune reminds me of small portions of the song Take On Me by A-Ha. Thankfully throughout the entirety of the show the tune remains, and has the same effect that TWRP’s album, The Device, had on me when I first listened to it.
Although we have high school characters such as Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve, the show basically gave them a separate story from the middle schooler’s, which tied in together in the end. Nancy did show how secretive a teenager can be, or how pressured a teenager can be when it comes to social situations. I didn’t like her relationship with Steve, since it drifted her away from her relationship with her best friend Barb which I can say was partially responsible for Barb’s death. Admittedly, Steve’s character did improve towards the end of the show, when he felt that he was wrong for his actions during the beginning of the show. Which leads me to Jonathan’s character. This is a character that even from the beginning showed the audience that he is not only protective of his brother, but will also do the best he can to help his mother that sometimes does in fact need comfort or help from time to time. Jonathan isn’t an open character, however, in social situations, and therefore he chooses to capture those social moments on camera.
These high school teenagers aren’t exactly the main characters however. They are a separate story from the main story that includes middle school kids as the main characters; both stories tie together during the end of the show. Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Will are the first four characters we are introduced to in the show. They have relatable traits that include a love for science fiction, fantasy, and being considered different or ‘weird’ from the rest of the school. The actions and personality traits that these children take and have are quite similar, or at least remind me of, the kids and their personalities from The Goonies, a movie that was in fact made in 1985.
The atmosphere of this show is nearly pastel, but a pastel palette of dull colors that I would otherwise disregard. However, the way this show produced such a palette had made me want to watch the show more, as it caught my attention. Just as the visuals caught my eye, the story did just the same. The suspense, mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, and a tad bit of comedy really makes the show an experience that I wouldn’t have found anywhere else.
There is so much more that I haven’t discussed but I still admire about Stranger Things, but overall this is a beautiful show that (again like everything else I rant about) I would recommend, although it’s more for teenagers and adults rather than children.
