Summary
Kara took Jimmy's advice but she can't say it was going so well. It's been a few months since she's been trying to see what's out there as he suggested and so far no one has caught her eye. Which brought her to a club, which brought her to a bar, which brought her to a table across the dance floor, staring into the green eyes of a woman who bought her a drink. Her name? Lena Luthor. Which she felt was important for some reason but no time to think because Lena was talking her and smiling at her!

Kara lets out a low whistle as she crosses the threshold of Lenaâs apartment. âThis place isâŚwow.â Her eyes sweep across the space before settling on the floor to ceiling windows. âItâs like five times the size of my studio.â
Kara admires the city. Lena admires her. Itâs strange having her here. Having her in Boston. In her head, Kara lives against a permanent backdrop of National City. Maybe Lenaâs imaging it, but the sunlight hits her differently here, like someone adjusted the saturation on a photo. Itâs still her Kara, but also different.
Lenaâs not entirely sure why Karaâs here. All she said was that she was going to be in town and wanted to see her. Lena was not inclined to pry that particular crate open in fear of what sheâd find inside. Instead, she graciously offered Kara her spare bedroom and didnât ask questions about what Kara was doing in Boston prior to her appearing at Lenaâs doorstep.Â
âI get why you donât want to leave,â Kara muses but all Lena can think of is how the view at her windows never looked better than this exact moment with Kara obstructing it.
âCome on,â Lena says, deciding she canât stomach the sight anymore. âIâll show you your room.â
The room is just down the hall from Lenaâs, which feels far too close and not close enough. Itâs really hitting her now just what sheâs agreed to. That Karaâs going to be in her space for the weekend and thatâs not something sheâs experienced in a long time. Suddenly her apartment doesnât seem as large as Karaâs made it out to be. Lena stands in the doorway, watches Kara drop her duffle bag on the bed. A bed that Lena meticulously made up, positioning the pillows just so, and washing the sheets that morning so theyâd smell fresh when Kara tucks into them later that night.
âSo whatâs the plan?â Kara asks, eyes sparkling. As if theyâve ever had a plan. As if they havenât been freefalling through life for all the years theyâve known each other. Itâs getting to the point where the ground is coming up quick and Lena canât find the parachute cord.Â
Lena leans a shoulder against the door frame, arms folded over her chest. âDepends what youâre in the mood for.â
âYou know me.â Kara wags her eyebrows. âIâm up for anything.â
Anything. The word sinks in Lenaâs stomach like a hot piece of lead. Lena shakes it off. Clears her throat. âThereâs a really good Ramen place around the corner. We might have to wait a bit for a table but itâs worth it.â
Kara smiles that smile thatâs always felt like it was just for her. âLetâs do it.â
***
âIâm seeing someone,â Kara blurts out as Lenaâs blowing on a clump of noodles.Â
Lena freezes, chopsticks suspended over her bowl. âOh.âÂ
Kara nibbles on her bottom lip. âYeah, Alex and Kelly set me up with someone from Alexâs work.â
Lena stares down at her bowl, mourning her appetite thatâs vanished. âThatâsâthatâs nice.â She pokes at the noodles with her chopsticks. âA doctor?â
âRN.â Kara slurps down a mouthful of noodles. It almost feels like a betrayal that the admission doesnât make Kara queasy. âHer name's Nicole.â
Lena feels something climbing up her throat. Acid reflux. A scream. Itâs not like they both havenât had relationships before. But theyâve never sat down and conversed about it over a shared meal. Thereâs always been the buffer of time and distance between them for that. The most Lenaâs had to confront over the years is the occasional picture on social media. But Kara, for some incredulous reason, has chosen this exact moment to break years of precedent. âAnd youâreâŚare you happy?â
Karaâs brow furrows like itâs a question that requires careful consideration. Lena doesnât know how to feel about that. Her stomach tightens.
âYeah,â Kara answers hesitantly, âI mean itâs early on, but, yeah.â
Lena forces herself to take another bite, if only to have an excuse not to respond. She chews slowly. Swallows down her pride. Forces a smile. âThen Iâm happy for you.â
Is it still a lie if she wants to mean it?
***
They go to brunch with Jack and Sam, which in hindsight was a terrible idea. One, because itâs one of those places that does bottomless mimosas. Two, because itâs Jack and Sam. And theyâre adamant on flipping through the rolodex of Lenaâs most embarrassing memories from their gradschool days.
âDo you remember the time you got so pissed at the bar and took your shirt off?â Jack is telling stories in a way that Lena finds endearing when itâs not at her expense. With charisma and exaggerated flourish and a champagne glass in hand.
âShirt and bra,â Sam adds, unhelpfully.
Jack laughs. âAnd whatâd she say when you tried to get her to put it back on?â
âIf men donât have to wear shirts, then I donât have to wear shirts!â Sam exclaims, in a decidedly terrible impression of drunk Lena.
âA feminist icon,â Jack drawls, raising his glass to Lena. âReally breaking down barriers for women everywhere.â
Kara is delighted by the story, hanging on to every word. âWhatâd you end up doing?â
âI snagged a fleece vest off of a finance bro and wrestled her into it because it was snowing outside and we still had to walk home,â Sam explains.
âHoes donât get cold,â Jack mutters into his glass.
âRight,â Lena finally interjects, cheeks flushed. âAs much as Iâm loving this trip down memory lane, Iâd like to remind you that I have blackmail worthy stories on both of you.â
***
âI like them,â Kara says on the walk back home. Both of them are a little tipsy and their shoulders keep bumping since neither of them can keep in a straight line. âI like that you have people who care about you here.â
Lena likes it too. Sam and Jack were the only thing that got her through that first year of grad school. They filled in the empty spaces of her life so perfectly. But itâs also difficult. Having people in two places that you love is like a never ending game of tug-a-war on your heart.
***
Back in Lenaâs condo, itâs just them and the daunting stretch of an empty afternoon. If Lena were sober, or smart, she wouldâve suggested they go literally anywhere else. Somewhere where the rest of the world couldnât fall away like it always did with them. Alone in her space with Karaâwho has a girlfriend, she keeps reminding herselfâfeels like Lenaâs very own gauntlet of fire. Because Lena is a little drunk. They both are. Itâs hard to moderate when the waitress keeps topping off your glass before youâve had a chance to finish it. Impossible to know their actual levels of consumption. Itâs enough for Lenaâs skin to be humming. Her head caught in a pleasantly floaty space. Limbs loose and deliciously heavy. Then thereâs Kara beside her, drawing her into her orbit like the sun. Nothing but blinding heat.
âIâll make us some tea,â Lena blurts. Itâs a good excuse to disappear for a bit. To put some space between them. She goes through the motions, filling the kettle, pulling two mugs from the cabinet, loads two infusers with some loose leaf jasmine, and squeezes a generous dollop of honey into Karaâs mug because she knows she likes it sweet.Â
Back in the living room, Karaâs settled deep into the sofa, lazily scrolling through whatever streaming service sheâs stumbled her way into. Lena places the steaming mugs on the coffee table. Internally sheâs smacking herself on the forehead for prepping a hot drink that she has to wait to cool before she can busy her mouth with it. A foolish oversight on her part. Now she has to sit here in a thick blanket of silence that itches against her skin.Â
âWatch anything good recently?â Kara asks.
Lena rolls her head to the side. Karaâs still scrolling, eyelids so heavy that her long lashes nearly kiss her cheeks. Her lips are full, a little dry from the cold weather. Kara must feel her gaze, because she turns and sheâs closer than Lena initially registered. A severe miscalculation. Her depth perception impaired by her intoxication. At least thatâs what she tells herself. Their eyes catch, two magnets finding each other. Lenaâs swimming in a sea of blue, or maybe the room is just starting to spin. She feels flushed all over. When Kara licks her lips, Lenaâs eyes trace the motion. There are two halves to Lenaâs brainâthe rational half and the caveman halfâ and theyâre having an all out cage fight. Unfortunately for the former, itâs getting absolutely pommeled to a pulp, and Lena is a biased referee. Lena doesnât stop. Just keeps leaning into Karaâs space and over that line they drew in the sand without every really talking about it andâ
Karaâs phone rings. It makes them both jump. Kara cycles through phases of confusion, clarity, then hesitation as she stares down at the caller ID. For a moment Lena thinks sheâs going to send it to voicemail. That, maybe, just this once when they reach that fork in the road, theyâll go left instead of right. Then at the last minute she answers.Â
âHey, Nicole.â
Lenaâs brain takes an emotional cold plunge and resurfaces painfully alert and sober.Â
âYeah, I just got back to my room. Yeah, of course Iâve got time.â Kara throws Lena an apologetic look and then stands, if a little unsteady, to scurry off to the guest bedroom. âHow was your shift?â
Lena tries to keep herself busy but thereâs only so much to distract herself with. She tidies up around the apartment, starts a load of laundry, lights a candle to mask the smell of her shame and desperation. When she runs out of practical things to do she drifts back into the living room, eyes immediately zeroing in on the two full mugs of tea gone cold. Something thick tries to claw its way free from her throat as she pours them into the sink, watching the liquid slowly disappear down the drain.Â
When Kara finally emerges two hours later, sheâs changed into a pair of sweats and a loose t-shirt. She looks soft and sleepy. Her hair is a little mussed and there are pink lines pressed into her cheeks. Mustâve taken a power nap after wrapping up her phone call. She smiles at Lena, slow and sheepish. âFigured weâd stay in tonight.â
Lena swallows thickly. âSure. I can make us something?â
Kara smiles. âOnly if I can help.â
âSays the woman who can barely boil a pot of water,â Lena teases.Â
âHey! That was college, okay? A lot has changed since then.â Kara means it lightheartedly, but it claps like thunder between Lenaâs ears.Â
They work side by side. Lena does the actual cooking while delegating simpler tasks like detailing the shrimp and chopping the mushrooms to Kara. She stirs the orzo, happy to keep her hands busy and letting the heat of the stove distract her from the what ifs rolling around in her brain like loose marbles.Â
They have dinner at the dining table, which Lena can count on one hand how many times sheâs used since moving in. She normally takes her dinner on the sofa but it seemed like a responsible choice to have a table between them. That is until theyâre seated at said table with their nicely plated meal, color draining from the sky casting a soft glow in the apartment, and the candle she lit earlier flickering beside them. Lena canât help but think the universe has pulled a fast one on her.Â
Kara moans loudly when her lips wrapped around her first bite. âThis is the best thing Iâve ever eaten.â
Lena allows herself to be flattered by the complement. Even if she only half believes it, not because she questions Karaâs sincerity, but because the woman eats so much food she doubts she remembers half of it. âThank you,â Lena mumbles anyway.Â
They both leave their glass of wine untouched still coming down from day drinking, or maybe for some other quieter reason neither of them will say. âYour flightâs at ten AM?â
Kara nods, swallowing down another bite.Â
âThe flight back is always longer,â Lena says for the sake of saying something. âTell Alex hi for me when she picks you up?â
Kara wipes at her mouth with the side of her hand. âOh, Nicole is actually picking me up.âÂ
Ah, right. Nicole. The thorn on the rose Lena keeps pricking her finger on. But thatâs not really fair is it? Lenaâs not sure whatâs fair between them. Lena would have to know what game theyâve been playing at all this time in order to know what the rules are.Â
âBut weâre having dinner with Alex and Kelly tomorrow night, so Iâll pass the message along.â
Lena wonders if Kara knows her words are a knife the way she says it so carefully like it makes a difference how gently they slip through Lenaâs ribs before piercing her heart.Â
***
After dinner they wind up on the dreaded couch again, both seemingly reluctant to be trapped by it once more. Lena puts on some sitcom that she knows they wonât pay attention to and, after they politely endure one or two episodes, they can part ways into their separate bedrooms.Â
âThis was fun,â Kara comments offhandedly.Â
Lena wants to laugh. Disney World is fun, a trip to Cape Cod is fun, but thisâthis weekend with Karaâhas felt like an act of cruelty. Lena canât remember why she agreed to it before. Why she thought sheâd come out of it unscathed. Why sheâs put her hands on a burning hot stove and now has the nerve to be shocked when they come away burned.Â
âIt was.â
âIt was good seeing you here. Seeing your life here.â Kara drifts for a moment, eyes going somewhere far away. Lena wonders what Karaâs seeing. If sheâs trying to fit herself into the shape Lenaâs life has twisted into. What it would look like if she were a main character in it and not a one-off guest appearance. Lenaâs imagined it more than sheâd care to admit. Kara blinks. Her gaze focuses on Lena again. âIâm turning in for the night. Iâve got a bit of a headache and I still need to finish packing.â
âOf course.â Lena canât deny that she feels a little relieved theyâre time is coming to a close.
***Â
Later in her bedroom she hears Kara puttering around in the guest bedroom. The door opens. The hall light flickers on. The pitter patter of barefeet down the hall. The sink in the bathroom starts running, an electric toothbrush hums. Then itâs deadly quiet again. Those footsteps carefully make their way back down the hall as if not to be heard. But instead of stopping where they should, they get closer, until theyâre slicing shadows through the light spilling under Lenaâs door. Her heart thunders in her chest. Her hands fist against her comforter. The silence becomes a blaring siren. The walls vibrating. Lena has a ridiculous urge to hide underneath her bed. But then the footsteps get further away again. The hall light flicks off. The guest bedroom door closes with a sense of finality. Lenaâs not sure how long she stares up at her ceiling before falling asleep.Â
***
When Lena wakes in the morning, Karaâs already gone. She leaves a handwritten note on the coffee table explaining that she wanted to get to the airport early and didnât want to disturb Lena. Lena looks around her empty apartment, which suddenly feels haunted, with the spirits of almost wandering up and down the hall. That night, when Lena lies down in her bed, she swears she hears footsteps outside her door.

A Super Assistant - Chapter 9
Part 1, Prev, Ao3
âI didnât realize all of this was public,â Lena says, making eye-contact with Winn over her laptop. He whistles innocently and busies himself with his own computer. Kara had brought him up that morning, after Lena had suggested pooling their information about Roulette. She hadnât realized that would involve inviting a fidgety little man to take up residence on her white couch. Â
Kara laughs anxiously, âWinnâs very good at digging stuff up. You know, nothingâs ever really disappeared online when heâs around.â
Lena raises an eyebrow.
AU - Lena Luthor Saves Krypton
Lena is somehow sent back in time and finds herself on Krypton 30 years before the planet explodes. Kara doesnât exist yet. Krypton has no idea whatâs about to happen to them.
Lena realizes that with her knowledge of whatâs to come and intellect to devise a solution, she can do two things. One, she can save an entire species from near extinction. Two, she can save Kara from ever having to experience the pain of losing her family, her home, and being abandoned. Kara could live a happy life and never know the burden of Supergirl or being the last daughter of Krypton.
So instead of trying to find a way back to Earth, back to her own time, she settles into life on Krypton, becomes fluent in Kryptonese, and sets about with a spectacularly single-minded focus of changing the future - to save this dying world (and Kara).
She succeedsâŚmostly. They canât fix the damage thatâs already been done to the planet. Their sun will die and destroy Krypton still, but with Lenaâs help theyâre able to locate a barren planet in another system that has a white star. Itâs brand new, strong, and will live for untold trillions of years (provided Kryptonians didnât try to harness its power again).
They terraform the planet and create âNew Kryptonâ using the dome concept that Zor-El invented fused with Coluan bottling technology. All Kryptonians are instantly transported to their new home thatâs identical to the old one save for one difference - the white sun grants them god-like powers that are beyond what Lena ever saw Kara and Clark capable of on Earth. Kryptonians are overwhelmed en masse by these powers. Some go power mad and attempt coups and form radical sects. Others realize the gift theyâve been given and, with Lenaâs guidance, Kryptonian society develops under a new mission - to travel the galaxy and offer help to all those in need. Not just offering knowledge and technology this time, but themselves with their newfound powers.

Lena could feel her pulse in her throat. The truth was staring her in the face, sitting across Catcoâs expansive office floor behind panes of glass in her office. It was so obvious yet it took this to make her realize.
When sheâd first noticed that her best friend had become distant and standoffish, she let it go. She had to
(because any Kara was better then no Kara)
because Lena Luthor didnât do half measures. She didnât, couldnât afford to, have a wide circle of shallow friendships. When she let someone in, she let them all the way in, and Kara Danvers had practically stormed the castle with her lunches and brunches and the way Lena would catch her looking at her.
Sheâs forced herself to ignore that, especially when Kara turned up dating âMikeâ.
You want to talk drama? Lena Luthor has drama. She was in love with her best friend, a straight girl who fell head over heels for the living embodiment of âI can be a better âboyfriendâ than himâ who also cheated on her with Supergirl, and spearheaded an alien invasion.
Thatâs leaving out the part where he abducted Lena to breed her and apparently let his mom watch.
(It turns like out that being abducted for breeding with an alien fuckboi isnât as fun as those books make it out to be)
So yeah⌠Kara needed space.
Then something odd happened.
Kara began doing her job. She was in her office most days. The bizarre excuses stopped. The mysterious absences tapered off. She was becoming a dedicated and seriously employee. She was no longer taking advantage of Lenaâs frankly rather obvious crush.
Something odd happened at the same time. Supergirl wasnât as visible anymore. Her cousin was randomly showing up in her town and when she was out and about, he was always with her. Lena took interest and noticed something. Supergirl wasnât fighting as hard. She was almost hiding behind Superman sometimes, and that was the most odd thing.
Then she came to Lenaâs balcony one night and Lena saw through it immediately.
It wasnât her. It was the Martian, pretending.
Oh, âsheâ had the looks. The lean muscles and big veiny hands, the soft, almost innocent sky blue eyes and tumbling locks of unbound honey blonde hair and broad shoulders, the ripped abs and rock hard butt under that skirt and a throat begging for soft kisses and little nips and nibbles, and⌠it looked like her but she was all wrong. The bravado and sadness were gone, and âSupergirlâ didnât look at Lena the way she always did. Her eyes didnât sweep Lenaâs body and noticeably linger on her chest for a moment before a subtle blush turned her cheeks pink.
Lena wasnât even wearing a bra and Supergirl didnât notice!
Finally Lena put two and two together when Kara showed up at work, glum as ever and wearing a baggy blouse. It didnât matter.
She couldnât hide the bump.
Two things happened at once; Lena thought âoh God she has no one to take care of herâ and âoh God Supergirl disappeared because Kara is Supergirl and Kara is pregnant.
Before she knew what she was doing she was half running to Karaâs office. Once she was inside she closed the door and flipped the switch that turned the glass walls opaque for privacy, which Kara never used.
Lena pulled over a side chair and sat down. Kara stared at her with alarm, wringing her hands. Lena gently took them in hers. Unprompted, Kara began to cry silently. Lena waited. She looked small and waifish, and somehow unkempt. Her hair needed a wash, she wore no makeup, and even her outfit seemed careless.
âItâs his, isnât it?â
Kara nodded.
Lena licked her lips.
âHas it made you lose your powers?â
Kara looked up sharply. Lena squeezed her hands hard.
âItâs okay. Iâm not angry with you.â
âI feel so stupid,â Kara choked out. âHe lied to me and tricked me. I wouldnât have let this happen if Iâd known he and his mother wanted both of us to be his⌠his brood mares. I feel like such an idiot.â
Lena looked around, found a box of Kleenex, and wiped the tears gently away. Kara leaned into her.
âYouâre really not mad at me?â
Lena shook her head. âOf course not, Darling. We all have our secrets.â She licked her dry lips.
Secrets like silently longing for your best friend, yearning for her touch, daydreaming silly domestic scenarios and exhausting herself at night on fantasies about Kara coming undone beneath herâŚ
âHow can I help you, Kara? What can I do?â
Kara nuzzled into Lenaâs neck.
âYou donât have to do anything. Just donât leave.â
âI would never.â
Kara breathed a sigh of relief.
It hit Lena all at once. The memory came back to her. A movie night, sheâd been invited by Kara to join her sister and friends. Someone picked the first Star Wars movie and she saw Kara tense. When the Death Star was about to blow up the planet Alderaan, Kara suddenly had to use the bathroom and looked shaken behind a false smile when she came back.
âMikeâ had been too busy checking out Alex and staring at Lenaâs tits to notice.
When the gathering broke up and he smacked Kara on the was a surge of jealousy and possessive rage made her wish for a Lexosuit.
She couldnât help but hold Kara tighter. Sheâd been through so much, lost so much.
âI want to take care of you.â
Lena knew what she was doing to herself. She would wreck herself on the rocky shores of Karaâs heterosexuality and sheâd do it gladly.
She told herself that.
Lena Luthor had a pattern recognition problem, believe it or not.
It would take her a while to realize why Supergirl looked at her like thatâŚ

Kara plays the part well.
She smiles at the right moments, lets herself be pulled into tight embraces, laughs in the way sheâs supposed to. She tells Alex sheâs fine, tells Jâonn sheâs okay, tells Nia sheâs happy to be home.
And they believe her.
They wantâneedâto believe her.
Lena is the only one who doesnât.
She sees the way Karaâs fingers twitch at her sides when she thinks no one is looking. The way her eyes keep darting to the shadows, searching, flickering, doubtful. The way she smiles but it never reaches her eyes.
She sees it all.
And it terrifies her.
So she stays quiet. Watches. Waits.
And when Alex finally pulls Kara away, murmuring something about rest, about taking it easy, Lena lets her go.
Because she knows.
Knows that Kara is going to break.
And when she doesâ
Lena will be there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Itâs late when she goes to Karaâs apartment.
She hesitates for only a second before she knocks.
For a long moment, nothing.
Thenâsoft footsteps, a slow turning of the knob.
And then Kara is standing there.
Her hair is damp, curling slightly at the ends, like sheâs just showered. Sheâs in sweatpants and a hoodieâone that looks too big, swallowing her whole.
Lenaâs chest aches.
Karaâs face is blank. Her eyes unreadable.
âYou shouldnât be here,â she says, but thereâs no weight to it.
Lena ignores it. âCan I come in?â
A pause.
Then, finallyâKara steps back.
Lena steps inside.
The apartment is dark, save for the moonlight spilling through the windows.
Everything is where Kara left it. A sweater draped over the couch. A book left open on the coffee table. A mug resting beside the sink.
It looks the same.
But it feels wrong.
Empty.
Like a place abandoned.
Kara stands in the middle of it, arms wrapped around herself, as if bracing for something unseen.
Lena watches her for a long moment.
Then, softlyâ âKara.â
Karaâs breath hitches.
She shakes her head. âDonât.â
âKaraââ
âDonât.â
Lena stills.
And thenâKara laughs.
But itâs hollow, sharp, wrong.
âYou know whatâs funny?â she says, voice thick. âI thought coming back would feel good.â
Lena doesnât move.
âI thoughtââ Kara lets out a breath, shaky, uneven. âI thought Iâd open my eyes and Iâd just be me again.â A pause. âBut I donâtâI donât feel like me.â
Lena steps closer. âYou are you.â
Kara shakes her head, fast, desperate. âI donâtâI donât know how to be. I feel likeââ She swallows, voice breaking. âLike I left parts of myself back there.â
Lenaâs throat tightens.
Kara lets out a short, sharp breath, pressing her hands against her temples, frustrated. âI donâtâI donât even know if this is real.â Her voice cracks on the last word.
Lenaâs heart shatters.
She closes the space between them, hands reaching outâbut Kara flinches.
Lena stops instantly.
Kara looks at her with something frantic in her eyes. Something terrified.
âWhat if this isnât real?â she chokes. âWhat if this is justâjust another trick? What if I wake up and Iâm still there?â
Lenaâs vision blurs.
She needs Kara to know.
So she reaches againâslowly this timeâhands ghosting over Karaâs arms, waiting, waiting.
âKaraââ
Kara sways toward her.
And then she falls.
Into Lenaâs arms. Into warmth. Into something solid, real, safe.
A broken, gasping sob tears from Karaâs throat, her fingers curling tight into Lenaâs sweater, clinging.
And LenaâLena holds her.
One hand in golden hair, the other rubbing slow, steady circles on her back. âIâve got you, darling. Iâve got you.â
Kara shakes.
Her breath is sharp, uneven, frantic.
Lena presses a kiss to her temple, then another, whispering, Youâre here. Youâre safe. This is real. I am real.
Slowlyâso, so slowlyâKaraâs breathing evens out.
Not steady. Not even.
But better.
And then, after a long momentâ
âStay?â
The word is small.
So small Lena almost doesnât hear it.
But when she looks down, Karaâs blue, blue eyes are pleading.
âOf course,â Lena breathes.
Kara swallows. âWill youââ A pause. A breath. âWill you hold me?â
Lena softens.
âOh, darling.â
She presses another kiss to Karaâs temple, so, so gentle.
âOf course I will.â
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They lie together in Karaâs bed, tangled close.
Kara is pressed against Lena, her face tucked into the curve of Lenaâs neck, their legs entwined, bodies blurred together until neither of them is sure where one begins and the other ends.
Lena runs her fingers through golden hair, slow and steady, grounding them both.
Itâs quiet.
Karaâs breath is warm against her collarbone.
For the first time in months, she feels warm.
Safe.
Real.
And thenâ
Kara shifts.
Sits up slightly, leaning on one elbow, looking at Lena.
Moonlight catches in her eyes, turning them into deep, endless pools of sapphire, glistening with unshed tears. Tiny reflections scattering across her lashes, fragile and shimmeringâlike distant stars trembling on the verge of falling, like the universe itself is holding its sorrow within her gaze.
Lena reaches up, brushing a strand of hair from her face. âWhat is it, darling?â
Kara hesitates.
Then, barely above a whisperâ
âI thought Iâd never see you again.â
Lenaâs heart aches.
She reaches for Karaâs hand, intertwining their fingers, squeezing gently. âBut you did.â
Karaâs breath hitches.
She swallows hard, gaze flickering over Lenaâs face, searching, memorizing.
Like sheâs afraid this moment will slip away.
Lena brings their joined hands up, presses a kiss to Karaâs knuckles.
Kara swallows again. Thenâsoft, hesitantâ
âI thought Iâd never get the chance toââ
She stops.
Bites her lip, breath uneven, scared.
Lenaâs thumb strokes gently over her hand. âThe chance to what?â
Karaâs eyes shimmer.
She exhales sharply, blinking fast, lips tremblingâ
And then, in a voice so small, so fragileâ
âTo tell you I love you.â
Lenaâs breath catches.
Kara looks like she might break apart, eyes darting down like she regrets saying it.
But Lena wonât let her.
She reaches up, cradling Karaâs face, guiding her gaze back.
A soft, trembling smile.
âI love you too.â
Kara shudders.
A tear slips down her cheek.
Lena catches it with her thumb, brushing it away as gently as possible.
And then Kara is leaning in.
Slow, hesitant, searchingâ
And Lena meets her halfway.
The kiss is soft at first. Just a press of lips, just a breath shared, just confirmation.
But then Kara makes a small, aching soundâa sound like relief, like hope, like something that has been waiting to be felt againâ
And Lena deepens it.
Karaâs hands find her, fingertips brushing over Lenaâs jaw, holding her close.
Lena sighs into her mouth, fingers threading into golden hair, pulling her in.
And Karaâ
Kara lets herself feel it.
Lets herself fall into warmth.
Into love.
Into something real.
And when they finally break apart, Kara presses her forehead against Lenaâs, breath still uneven, fingers still curled tight into her sweater.
And Lena just holds her.
Lets herself be held.
Lets herself fall.
Kara exhales, slow and shaky.
And then Lena is pulling her down, arms wrapping tight around her, whispering it again and againâ
âI love you, baby. I love you so so much.â
And as Kara buries herself into Lenaâs warmth, breath hitching, fingers gripping tightâ
She finally, finally believes that this is real.

In Lena's office
Kara:(angry) I don't like her ok. I don't care how successful or pretty she is, you shouldn't be going out with her.
Lena:(confused) what is this about?
Kara:(tears forming in her eyes) it's about your choices. They are not good ones.
Lena:(expressions hardening) what do you know about my choices? I am not going on a date with Ava. She's just a good friend and I don't believe it would have been an issue if I was going.
Kara:(shouting) of course it would have been an issue, you are married to me. I am your wife, no one can come close to you except me. (Realising what she said while Lena is stunned)
Lena: Wh.. what, what do you mean?
Kara:(trying to leave) I..I need to g..go.
Lena:(stopping her immediately by holding Kara's wrist)what do you mean married?
Kara not looking at her while Lena squeezes her wrist and pulls her closer
Lena: I asked you something, KARA.
Kara: the bracelet you gave me on my birthday, put on my wrist. That means marriage as a Kryptonian, Lena. We don't use rings. I know you didn't knew but .....
Lena:(pulling away)I forced that on you
Kara:(cupping her cheeks)Zhao, not your fault. I should have stopped you but my biggest wish was becoming reality Infront of me, so I didn't. Now I am trapping you.
Lena: wish? Kara, do you love......me?
Kara:(smiling sadly)more than anything.
Lena:(pulling Kara into her arms)we have been married?(Kara nodding in her neck), for a month?(Kara nods)and you don't have any issue with it?(Kara shaking her head) You are my wife, mine?(Kara nods)
Lena: Alex is right, we are dumb.(Pulling away to kiss Kara)
Lena:(breaking the kiss, making Kara whimper) Fuck you are mine.(Kara blushes)
Kara:(hiding in Lena's neck to whisper) there are other things too, I need to give you a bracelet as well and then.....
Lena:(pulling the back of Kara's head by her hair to make her look) Then what love?
Kara:(surpressing a moan at her actions) con.... Consummate this marriage.
Lena:(pulling her into another kiss by her waist) give me my bracelet and leave the consummation to me. I NEED to make you mine, we will also have another ceremony for everyone. Is this ok baby? (Kara nods against her lips and smiles shyly)

Even before Lena opens her eyes, her mind registers just how warm she is. Lena blinks her eyes open, adjusting to the dim light of the room.Â
She knows she shouldnât let herself get used to this, but who is she kidding, she spends more nights at Karaâs than she does her own now.
Thereâs always an excuse, like itâs getting late, or Karaâs apartment is closer to Lenaâs work, or theyâre getting breakfast together in the morning so Lena should just stay the night.
Lena never refuses, just follows Kara into her bedroom, where a drawer full of Lenaâs clothes have accumulated, where she has space in the closet and a toothbrush in the bathroom.
Lena always tries to remind herself that theyâre just friends, but the lines have been blurring more and more lately and Lena doesnât have the strength to stop it.
Karaâs close, their legs tangled together in sleep. Lena doesnât move, doesnât want Kara to stir, not while she looks so peaceful in sleep.
Lenaâs eyes travel over Karaâs face, slack with sleep. Right now, sheâs not the award-winning journalist, sheâs not the hero that has the weight of the world on her shoulders, sheâs just Kara.
A Kara that not many people get to see, a Kara that Lena knows she is lucky to have in her life.
From this close, even in the dim light, Lena can see the freckles scattered across Karaâs cheeks and the little scar on her forehead.
Lena lets herself have this moment, lets herself look, lets herself enjoy the warmth of Kara next to her and pretend that this is something she gets to keep forever.
Sheâs so distracted by her own thoughts, she doesnât notice the change in Karaâs breathing, doesnât notice that sheâs awake until itâs too late.
âWere you watching me sleep?â
Lenaâs cheeks heat as blue eyes open to meet hers, striking even when she still looks half asleep.
âNo.â
Karaâs mouth ticks up. âLiar. Itâs okay,â Kara continues. âIâve definitely watched you sleep before so weâre even.â
Lena bites her lip as she tries not to smile, and she doesnât miss the way Karaâs eyes glance down.
âAre we talking watching me sleep Edward Cullen style where you sneak into my room and watch me sleep, orâŚ?â Lena asks, struggling to keep a straight face as she does.
Kara huffs out a laugh. âI never should have shown you those movies. And no, Iâve never snuck into your room to watch you sleep.â
âNoted.â
Kara gives her a little shove, more awake now. It makes Lena acutely aware of just how close they are, but Lena canât bring it in herself to move.
Kara looks so soft in the morning light, and Lena wants nothing more than to snuggle closer, to wrap her arms around Kara, bury herself in Karaâs warmth and never let go.
âDid you sleep okay?â Kara asks after a long moment, eyes still crinkled with sleep.Â
âI did,â Lena nods. She always sleeps better when sheâs with Kara.
âGood. Now, since I hardly ever get the chance because of how early you usually get up, Iâm going to make you breakfast in bed.â
âNo, you donât-â Lena starts, but Karaâs having none of it.
âNope, I never get to treat you, youâre always buying me things, so this time, Iâm going to treat you. Youâre going to do nothing but lie here and rest while I go and make us some breakfast, and thatâs an order.â
The look Kara gives her says thereâs no room for arguments.
Lena wonders if she argued for Kara to snuggle in bed a bit longer, if Kara would do it.
âOkay,â Kara says, suddenly more awake, an excited glint in her eyes. Lena wonders if she should be worried. âStay here.â
Before Lena can even register whatâs happening, Kara leans forward and presses a quick kiss to her forehead. Time slows down after, however, as Kara pulls away, looking worried.
Kara bites her lip. âWas that okay?â
Lena feels like she can barely breathe, and the lip bite isnât helping.Â
âYes,â Lena nods, a smile slipping onto her face as she fully realises what Kara has just done. Itâs more than okay.
Kara visibly relaxes. âOkay, good.â She hesitates for a moment before she leans back in, placing another quick kiss to Lenaâs forehead, this time smiling as she pulls away.
Sheâs out of bed a moment later, Lena missing the contact immediately. âDonât move.â
Lena smiles. âI wonât,â she promises.
She knows they should probably talk about whatâs going go between them, because theyâre crossing more and more lines every day. But not today, today sheâs going to enjoy Kara bringing her breakfast in bed, and maybe tomorrow sheâll finally tell Kara how she really feels.
