I’m watching that documentary “Before Stonewall” about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.

The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one “known homosexual”. The “known homosexual” is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.

So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there’s nothing wrong with him mentally and he’s never been arrested. When asked whether he’d take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows he’s gay, he says that they didn’t up until tonight, but he guesses they’re going to find out, and he’ll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like …why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says “I think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.”

1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.

Despite the pseudonym, Dale’s boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.

Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson’s disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.

It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought I’d make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.

the only reason people would think it’s inappropriate for anyone to see someone breastfeeding (which is basically their argument, just that it’s inappropriate) is because society has sexualized that particular piece of anatomy to the point that its actual primary function is forgotten and its seen only as something sexual.

When the Nazi concentration camps were liberated by the Allies, it was a time of great jubilation for the tens of thousands of people incarcerated in them. But an often forgotten fact of this time is that prisoners who happened to be wearing the pink triangle (the Nazis’ way of marking and identifying homosexuals) were forced to serve out the rest of their sentence. This was due to a part of German law simply known as “Paragraph 175” which criminalized homosexuality. The law wasn’t repealed until 1969.

I have reblogged this in the past, but it is so ironic that it comes across my dash right now. I a currently working as a docent at my city’s Holocaust Education Center (( I say currently because I’ve also done research and translation for them )) and out current exhibit is one on loan from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum ((USHMM)). This is a little known historical fact that Paragraph 175 was not repealed after the war and those convicted under Nazi laws as a danger to society because they were gay were not released because they had be convicted in a court of law. There was no liberation or justice for them as they weren’t considered criminals, or even victims for that matter. They were criminals who remained persecuted and ostracized and kept on the fringes of society for decades after the war had been won. Paragraph175 wasn’t actually repealed until 1994. And it was only in May 2002, that the German parliament completed legislation to pardon all homosexuals convicted under Paragraph175 during the Nazi era. History has forgotten about these men and women — please educate yourselves so this does not happen again. Remember this history. Remember them.

This is one of the memorial sculptures in Dachau.  It was erected in the early 60s and is missing the pink triangles.  Because in the early 60s, homosexuality was still a crime in most of the world. Our tour guide explained why the pink triangles have not been added later - if they were, then folks would assume that they had always been there.  This way people ask “why aren’t there pink triangles?” and somebody can explain why - because in some ways, the rest of the world was as bass-ackwards as Nazi Germany.

When people get pregnant, they will give up smoking, give up alcohol, give up coffee and soda, give up fondue and raw cheese, give up cold cuts and sushi, all because they have heard somewhere, from someone, that these things can be bad for the baby. They don’t know the research, haven’t looked at the studies, can’t talk about sample sizes and control groups. But their dedication to their future child’s safety is so strong, their caution is so overpowering, that they give up these things just in case. 

So it baffles me when those same people will insist on spanking their kids. 

Even when they are shown the research.

 Regardless of what the experts in the field say. 

No matter who says it. 

Or how it is said. 

People are so invested in this ability to hit their kids without judgement or consequence, that it absolutely confounds me.

There’s a difference in whoopin kids and hitting/abusing them. I got whoopins as a kid and I turned out great. I have respect for others, I use my freakin manners, I know right from wrong, I do what I should and not what I shouldn’t, etc. And when the time comes I’ll give my kids whoopins for the things I was whooped for. A lot of kids who grow up in houses with peeling lead paint turn out fine because they were lucky enough to never eat a paint chip.

A lot of kids who ride in cars without seatbelts are lucky enough to never be in an accident.

At age 8 I climbed a mountain called Breakneck Mountain. I didn’t fall off and die. Would anyone recommend this as a fun activity for most 8 year olds? (It didn’t involve pitons, but it did in fact involve scrambling up rocks.) I jumped off my grandparents’ garage roof at age 12 repeatedly and never broke my leg. Would you suggest your kids should do the same? An 8 year old boy recently drove his little sister to the store for ice cream and obeyed all traffic laws and drove flawlessly. Do you think it’s safe for 8 year olds to drive?

Just because a lot of kids survived a thing that has the potential to cause a lot of harm without actually suffering any harm, doesn’t mean the thing wasn’t potentially very harmful. Luck saves a lot of kids… but not all of them. You want to be the one whose kid isn’t lucky? 

Some parents drink and smoke and their kids are just fine. Some moms clean the cat box while they’re pregnant and nothing bad happens. Some people feed grapes and hot dogs to their 2 year olds and the kids don’t choke to death. Some people leave their kids alone all night while they go out partying and nothing bad happens. But would anyone think a good parent who wants to keep their kids safe would deliberately do these things?

Just because some children got spanked and nothing bad happened doesn’t mean spanking is safe and okay to do. It causes the same kind of damage that child abuse does. Not as extreme, on average, but why are you deliberately risking that kind of harm to your child?

There are alternatives to spanking that are safer and just as effective or more effective. They just involve adults having some goddamn patience and being willing to learn something new. Why would you risk permanent psychological damage to your child because you weren’t willing to learn something?

no but literally that is what is happening, there have been long periods of western history where spirits were said t be frightened by the site of lady business. Sailor’s wives used to flash their husbands ships (mind you this was a time before underwear so you just lifted your petticoats and BAM) in order to scare away the spirits and devils that made storms. A woman could flash her crops to keep away spirits that might ruin them.This was also back when the vagoo was seen as something taboo and horrible so literally looking directly at some labia was thought to be so scary the devil would poop himself.
