i’m so fucking pissed off at this picture
wwhat the fuck….
I FUCKING LOVE THIS
oh my god thank you for the second perspective, it honestly makes me feel way less stressed about this image, you have no idea
Here’s the second image again since it somehow disappeared in reblogs
A woman selling "wine bricks" (compressed grape juice), August 3, 1931. The packages were supposed to be dissolved into grape juice, but included the warning, “Do not dissolve the concentrate in a gallon of water, add yeast, and let it sit in a dark place for 21 days, or else it will ferment into wine.”

My scorching hot take on Christopher Nolan Presents Homer's The Odyssey is Tom Holland having his mind blown while filming this, then going back to Marvel to and being all "Why did no one tell me that you can, like, have a finished script before you start filming and a cinematographer who has all the shots planned before filming instead of figuring it out in post, has anyone else heard about this?" is pretty funny
Visionary Director Christopher Nolan's controversial directing style of "telling actors what's happening in a scene when they're filming"
If i had the money, I would start a business called Box of Rocks. And it would be all electrical appliances that are, as it says on the company logo, as dumb as a box of Rocks.
No wifi or bluetooth connections. No touch screens. No predictive behaviours. No account log in. No fancy bullshit nonsense.
A fridge that does nothing but keep your food cool. A washing machine that washes clothes, the fucking end. And actually on the washing machine note: they would all have optional two-tap ports, so you CAN use the machine to heat the water if you need to, but you dont HAVE to, if youre in a home that has a massive hot water tank or whatever. AND, it would have fast cycles. None of this two hour minimum bullshit. Fuck outta here with that nonsense. 20 minute half-sized fast loads, 45 minute full sized regular loads, and a two hour option for those of you who like things slow or wanna give your towels an extra good long wash or whatever.
Anyway moving on. Dumb clothes dryers that just dry things, at a manually set array of temperatures, not an auto-temp chosen by the machine based on the detected type of fabric or size of the load. Dumb toasters. But QUALITY. None of this "its just fifteen bucks but it will last five minutes" shit. Dumb TVs. With various different ports, while we're at it. You want a security camera, but want full control of who accesses the recordings? Done. Dumb elevators, that go up and down at the press of a button and have no complex bullshit that takes out the whole lift whenever it experiences an internet outage.
DUMB CARS. WITH NO TOUCH SCREENS OR TRACKING TECH OR OTHER BULLSHIT.
GIVE ME MY APPLIANCES AS DUMB AS A BOX OF ROCKS. I DONT WANT THEM MAKING DECISIONS FOR ME. I DON'T WANT THEM "HELPING" ME. I DONT WANT TWO THIRDS OF THE BULLSHIT THATS IN THEM THESE DAYS.
I tried to buy a washing machine recently. They were ALL SOME DEGREE OF FUCKING "SMART." And yeah you can simply opt to not set it up, which is what i ended up doing, but it still prompts me even now to "complete set up?" AND it pushed the overall price of washing machines up because even though I dont plan to USE any of their STUPID smart tech, it was still included in the model! So it costs more! Because its "smart"!
Well i dont WANT IT TO BE SMART. I WANT IT TO BE DUMB. I WANT MANUALLY CHOSEN SETTINGS. I WANT BUTTONS AND KNOBS. I WANT IT TO BE INERT WHEN NOT IN USE. I WANT IT STUPID BUT FUNCTIONAL. THIS CANNOT BE A NICHE MARKET. GIVE ME STUPID APPLIANCES.

They say that sudden, intense cravings for very specific foods are usually a sign of a vitamin deficiency. If so, that I'm presently making myself french toast, scrambled eggs, and a bacon and cheese sandwich at 11:45 PM must mean the vitamin I'm missing is grease.
I cross-posted this to Bluesky and got followed by a bunch of folks with blog headers clarifying which exact flavour of Christianity they adhere to because they thought I was making a hashtag-relatable post about cheating on your diet. Now we get find out how many of them are also comfortable with posts about werewolf cock.
A Quiet Rule Review Could Drain the Prairie Pothole Region, America’s “Duck Factory”
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rule revision would drain thousands of tiny-but-vital wetlands across the northern Great Plains
“Right now, the most important waterfowl habitat in the United States of America is at risk. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering repealing the rule that protects the integrity of the Duck Stamp easements that have been purchased for generations. Whether you’re a duck hunter or not, you understand the importance of conservation, the importance of waterfowl habitat, wildlife habitat, and clean water. Please take advantage of this opportunity to make your voice heard.” - Adam Putnam, CEO of Ducks Unlimited
On the northern Great Plains, the grasslands in states from Montana and the Dakotas to Minnesota and Iowa, as well as parts of Canada, are dotted with countless often-temporary wetlands. Some cover less than an acre. Many dry up and disappear during the year, only to return with snowmelt and spring rain. Collectively, these glacial depressions form one of North America’s most productive wildlife landscapes—the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). Often called the continent’s “duck factory,” this is the breeding, nesting, and hatching habitat for over 60% of ducks in North America, as well as dozens of other species of migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds. This sprawling collection of millions of shallow wetlands is arguably America’s least known yet most important and threatened ecosystem. Now, however, an obscure federal review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has placed the future of many thousands of those tiny wetland habitats in doubt. "Right now, the most important waterfowl habitat in the United States of America is at risk. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering repealing the rule that protects the integrity of the Duck Stamp easements that have been purchased for generations," said Adam Putnam, CEO of Ducks Unlimited. "Whether you’re a duck hunter or not, you understand the importance of conservation, the importance of waterfowl habitat, wildlife habitat, and clean water. Please take advantage of this opportunity to make your voice heard..."

you ever take a work-from-home day to accompany somebody going car-shopping and you realize they are the most financially-illiterate person you've ever met
this guy finally gets a half-decent job and saves up $10k for a down payment. which, awesome. congrats homie
red flag no.1: he cares more about looking like he's made it than he does buying something he can afford. so he decides on a 3 year old car that the dealer has listed for $35k
red flag no.2: he has a decent amount saved up but they run his credit and it's dog-fuckin-shit so they come back with a double-digit interest rate.
red flag no.3: all he cares about is his monthly payment, not the total cost of the loan and payoff amount, so they come back with a $650/mo payment for SEVENTY TWO MONTHS and he said "yeah sounds great"
this man is fucking stupid so i had to pull him aside and tell him the math worked out to $17000 in interest alone (half the cost of the goddamn car) and his eyes went so fucking wide and all the color left his face
"A couple of years ago I had a very special morning on Shetland where some wonderful people came together to show me Shetland ponies in their traditional working gear. Klibbers are the wooden contraption that sits on the horses’s back and people could then hang their loaded baskets, nets etc with the material you want carried. Here the pony is loaded with peat (but they would have carried all manner of things such as seaweed). Peat is used as a fuel to burn as there are very few trees. It is heavy stuff and people would have had to travel many miles to the peat bank and bring it home. Having a pony meant you could carry more peat and save time in multiple journeys.
Shetland ponies were an important part of life on these islands and the crofts (small scale farms that supported a family of multiple generations) people lived and worked on. From transporting fertilisers like seaweed and peat, ploughing, and transporting people. They have legendary strength and are the strongest horse breed relative to its size - they can pull nearly twice their own weight!" - Ruth on the Hoof

dear everyone on tumblr who needs to host images elsewhere (e.g. to embed on ao3 etc), please give squidge a go!! it's free, it's nonprofit and it's geared towards fandom so nsfw images won't get deleted!! and please stop using imgur if you can because they blocked the uk rather than acquiesce to the fucking internet safety laws, which I can't really hold against em but it does mean all imgur pictures just show up as big purple boxes now
Squidge! Holy blast from the past, Batman. The last time I remember even looking at that site was... eons ago.
( Oh, what was I reading? The Quartz Key. Yes, it's m/m. )
Not only is Squidge still around, it's expanded and grown! It is still run by the same guy, though now it's a nonprofit with a board and everything, and while they maintain all the old squidge sites as static archives, they have a new multifandom archive using the AO3 code at squidgeworld.org. They also host podfics and fanart.
For those younguns in the crowd, back in the day erotic fanworks--especially slash--was not welcome very many places. Walter was willing to host it, and has been a haven for NSFW fanworks since 1994. The various archives and so on hosted at squidge.org were never very large, compared to lots of other archives, but they were a necessary part of the fannish ecosystem, and I'm really glad that there is now a structure in place to keep the whole system running beyond just "Walter's a great guy willing to donate lots of time and money." Walter is a great guy! but like. it's good to have other people to help out and keep things going in the long run.
An animatronic exhibit that's set up like a zoo of extinct species with stuff like little natural-sized eohippus puppet curled up on a nap on historically accurate forest flora, with the breathing motions of peaceful sleep and an ear flick every now and then. The placards on the species explain both what the species is, how and when it lived, and also how earlier archeologists used to get this particular species wrong. Then, as the fun part: How these earlier wrong assumptions led to bad and unethical zookeeping.
Like "this is [beast]. They are social creatures moving in packs of roughly [number] members. [Because of reasons], the earlier research mistakenly assumed that they are solitary, but specimen kept on their own without packmates engaged in anxious behaviours," etc, therefore giving the whole exhibit an extra layer, being also an exhibit on the history of zookeeping itself!
Also, as an almost obligatory thing, there are vague references to some other earlier prehistoric zoo that famously got things really badly wrong with enclosure design and also everything else, but due to threats of slander lawsuits they can't legally explicitly name ***ass** Park when talking about how badly they sucked from a zoo design standpoint.
Any time you get scolded for biting the hand that feeds you, a good chunk of the time they're not even fucking feeding you in the first place. They just think that you should feel like they are.
