Nope(2022) commentary on how the suffering and trauma of others is often repackaged and commodified I think is a really good condemnation of true crime. The violent mauling by Gordy and the life long scars (mental and physical) that are left on the victims being turned into a SNL skit always make me think of those “quirky” true crime podcasts where the hosts laugh and retell the stories of violent murders as if its fun, hot gossip. How the families of the victims hate how their loved one has been turned into a joke or, worse, criticized for the nature of their demise. Jordan Peele seeks to show the selling of suffering continues to retraumatize and halt the healing of its victims.
