That 100,000 people, many LGBT+ individuals, especially gay men, died under his and Reagan’s watch. I know people who basically tell me that I, a minimum wage-paid, impoverished laborer, could help end poverty by being less materialistic.  That always makes me so fucking mad because those of us who are poor, even if we do have eight pairs of shoes (most of them years old, jealously guarded, and well taken care of because who knows when I’ll be able to buy a new pair) instead of the one or two pairs we may technically need, are not the reason that another human doesn’t have any shoes.  I’m as much a wage slave as anyone else on the bottom rung.

Stop asking poor people to live even more simply, as if that could fix inequality, and start dismantling capitalism.  Lateral charity from one poor person to another does not change the economic system that made any of them poor.

Also, capitalism is extraordinarily inefficient at producing progress because it encourages absurd levels of redundancy by making it a priority to do the exact same thing your competitor is doing. It means you’re doing the work 10 times over to advance half as far.

The only benefit we get from this kind of model is that it’s useful for improving efficiency on a very small scale, and even then it’s only useful if we control for capitalism’s need to define ‘efficient’ as ‘built on human suffering’.

Also, most general purpose technology we use was developed by the state. Technological innovation takes decades to become commercially viable and companies would rather not invest the time given that they wouldn’t want to wait for decades to profit.

For the past 27 days, a small Protestant church in The Hague has been conducting round-the-clock religious services to protect an Armenian refugee family from deportation.

By law, police officers in The Netherlands are not allowed to enter places of worship during religious services. So, reverends from around the country have taken turns holding services at Bethel Church to prevent officials from arresting the Tamrazyan family, who have been in The Netherlands for nine years. 

“By giving hospitality to this family, we could give them time and place to [demonstrate] to the secretary of state the … urgency of their situation,” Theo Hettema, chairman of the General Council of Protestant Ministers says.

Well, this isn’t a ‘the Netherlands is better than the US’ thing. This is very much a ‘states attack refugees and people resist’ thing.

This whole action is going on BECAUSE the Dutch state is deporting children who are born here or have lived here since they were toddlers, who don’t speak any other language than Dutch and then suddenly have to live in a country where they don’t speak the language, where some have no relatives and where many are not safe.

The Dutch government treats refugees like shit and has plenty of blood on its hands, that’s why things like these are happening.

the thing thats shitty about “green living” in a capitalist society is that capitalism will make the consumer dependent on the system (mega corporations, companies, whatever), which will produce pollution/waste/etc regardless. from what i gather the solarpunk movement not only focuses on true sustainable living but also encourages people to be self dependent, collect their own energy/water/etc, whereas modern “green living” puts up a class barrier by charging a shitton for things like reusable bags, boxes, eco friendly packagaing, clothes, food, etc, a lot of which are also produced through unethical labor.

theyve basically got a lot of people trapped, thinking that they’re doing their part to save the environment, but they arent (and that isnt their fault). they dont realize that their environmental impact is infinitesimally small and these companies are just taking advantage of their drive to do good.
